Bio

My life goals are to become a Certified Public Accountant, earn my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Master’s degree in Finance, and build a career helping entrepreneurs and small business owners succeed financially. I want to use my education and experience to provide accounting, tax, and financial guidance that helps businesses grow and create long-term stability within their communities. I am most passionate about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and helping others achieve their goals. I understand that many small business owners struggle because they lack access to quality financial guidance, and I want to help bridge that gap. I am especially passionate about supporting underserved and minority-owned businesses because I believe financial knowledge can create opportunities and generational wealth. I believe I am a strong candidate because I have demonstrated discipline, resilience, and academic excellence. While attending Texas State University full-time, I maintained a 3.9 GPA while working two jobs, including a position at my campus recreation center and a paid internship as a tax consultant with Intuit. Balancing academics and work strengthened my time management skills, work ethic, and determination. In Fall 2026, I will transfer to Southern Methodist University as an Honors Scholar to continue pursuing my goals. I am committed to using my education and experiences to make a meaningful impact in business and in my community.

I believe I should be considered for this scholarship because I have consistently demonstrated determination, academic excellence, leadership, and resilience while balancing significant responsibilities throughout my educational journey. My experiences have shaped me into someone who understands the value of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. I have learned that success is not simply about talent, but about remaining committed to my goals even when circumstances become difficult. Every challenge I have faced has motivated me to work harder toward creating a better future for myself, my family, and the people I hope to positively impact through my career. Academically, I have worked extremely hard to maintain a 3.9 GPA while balancing demanding work schedules and professional responsibilities. Education has always been important to me because I see it as the foundation for long-term growth, opportunity, and generational advancement. I take pride in challenging myself academically while also pursuing experiences outside the classroom that help me grow professionally and personally. My coursework has strengthened my critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and communication skills, all of which I know will be valuable in my future career. One of my proudest accomplishments has been gaining hands-on professional experience while still in school. I worked as a paid tax consultant intern with Intuit, where I assisted clients with tax preparation and learned how to communicate effectively in high-pressure situations. This experience gave me the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations while also developing professionalism, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. Working in a professional environment taught me the importance of accountability, teamwork, and serving others with excellence. At the same time, I also worked at my campus recreation center from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. before attending classes during the day. Balancing early morning work shifts, a full academic schedule, and internship responsibilities in the evenings and weekends was one of the most difficult challenges I have ever faced. There were many days when I felt physically exhausted and mentally drained, but I remained committed to my goals because I understood that my sacrifices would create opportunities for my future. Rather than viewing my workload as a setback, I saw it as preparation for the discipline and responsibility required for success in life and business. Outside of academics and work, I have also focused on personal growth and leadership. Through interacting with students, coworkers, and clients from diverse backgrounds, I have strengthened my communication and interpersonal skills. I have learned how to lead by example, remain calm under pressure, and encourage others even when facing challenges myself. My experiences have helped me develop resilience and maturity far beyond the classroom. I understand the importance of persistence, adaptability, and maintaining a positive attitude in difficult situations. One of the greatest challenges I faced during school was learning how to manage the overwhelming demands of balancing multiple responsibilities at once. There were times when my schedule felt impossible. I would wake up before sunrise to work at the recreation center, attend classes throughout the day, complete assignments late at night, and still dedicate time to my internship responsibilities. The pressure of trying to excel academically while maintaining strong work performance was mentally and emotionally challenging. At one point, I realized that if I did not become more intentional with my time and priorities, I would quickly become overwhelmed. Instead of giving up or lowering my standards, I decided to become more disciplined and organized. I created detailed schedules for my days, prioritized my assignments, and learned how to maximize every hour of my time. I also learned the importance of self-motivation and mental toughness. Even when I felt tired or discouraged, I reminded myself why I started and what I wanted to accomplish. Overcoming this challenge taught me valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life. I learned that resilience is built through adversity and that growth often comes from uncomfortable situations. I also learned that true success requires sacrifice, consistency, and faith in yourself even during difficult moments. Most importantly, I proved to myself that I am capable of handling challenges while continuing to perform at a high level. Receiving this scholarship would not only help reduce the financial burden of pursuing higher education, but it would also serve as an investment in someone who is deeply committed to academic success, professional growth, and making a positive impact in the future. I am determined to continue working hard, expanding my knowledge, and using my experiences to inspire and uplift others. This scholarship would provide additional support as I continue striving toward my goals and building a future defined by perseverance, leadership, and excellence.

Faith plays a central role in my life as a source of strength, discipline, and direction. It grounds me during seasons of pressure and reminds me that my journey has purpose beyond what I can see in the moment. As a student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with plans to continue into a Master’s in Finance, I have faced the challenge of balancing academics, work, and long-term career preparation while maintaining a 3.9 GPA at Texas State University. In those moments when I felt overwhelmed, my faith helped me stay focused and reminded me that consistency and perseverance matter even when progress feels slow. My faith has also shaped how I approach my academic and future goals. It has taught me patience, humility, and trust in the process. Working two jobs while attending school full-time, including an early morning position at my campus recreation center and a paid tax internship with Intuit, required a level of discipline that often stretched me beyond my comfort zone. My faith helped me stay grounded during those demanding seasons, giving me the strength to continue pushing forward and trusting that my hard work would lead to meaningful opportunities. Beyond academics, my faith influences how I view purpose and service. I believe my education is not just for personal success, but for impact. I feel called to use my skills in accounting and finance to help entrepreneurs and small business owners gain financial clarity and stability. This perspective pushes me to pursue excellence not only for myself, but so I can serve others with integrity, compassion, and purpose in my future career as a Certified Public Accountant. In addition to faith, my biggest motivation to pursue higher education has been my family and personal experiences. Seeing the sacrifices made around me taught me the importance of education as a pathway to opportunity and generational change. I also draw motivation from being a first-generation college student, which means I have had to navigate many parts of this journey independently. That experience has pushed me to stay focused, seek out opportunities, and remain committed even when the path is challenging. My academic journey at Texas State University has shown me what I am capable of achieving through discipline and resilience. Every challenge I have overcome has strengthened my desire to continue my education and reach higher levels of success. I want my achievements to not only reflect my personal growth, but also inspire others who may come from similar backgrounds to believe that they, too, can succeed in higher education. Ultimately, faith gives me strength, my family gives me purpose, and my experiences give me motivation. Together, they push me to pursue higher education with focus and determination, while preparing me to use my future career to create meaningful impact in the lives of others.

I embody a life of service by consistently showing up for others through my actions, work ethic, and commitment to excellence, even when it requires personal sacrifice. Service, to me, is not limited to formal volunteer work—it is reflected in how I treat people, how I handle responsibility, and how I use my skills to help others solve real problems. As a student at Texas State University, I have maintained a 3.9 GPA while working two jobs, including an early morning role at my campus recreation center and a paid tax internship with Intuit. Balancing these responsibilities has required discipline and resilience, but it has also given me opportunities to serve others by being dependable, professional, and solution-oriented in every environment I am part of. I also embody service through my interactions with people in both academic and professional settings. In my tax internship, I assisted individuals who were often overwhelmed, stressed, or unsure about how to navigate their financial situations. Many of them were small business owners or individuals seeking clarity during tax season. In those moments, service meant more than completing a task—it meant listening carefully, explaining information clearly, and helping people feel supported and confident. I learned that service is often found in patience, empathy, and the ability to simplify complex problems for others. My approach to service is also deeply rooted in responsibility and leadership. I believe that when you are given knowledge, opportunity, and access to education, you also carry the responsibility to use those tools to uplift others. I take pride in being someone who leads by example, whether through academic performance, workplace reliability, or personal discipline. I understand that people are always watching, and I strive to demonstrate consistency and integrity in a way that can positively influence others, especially those who may feel discouraged or uncertain about their own path. I plan to use my education to serve others by becoming a Certified Public Accountant and using my expertise in accounting and finance to support entrepreneurs, small businesses, and underserved communities. My goal is to help individuals understand their financial situations, make informed decisions, and build sustainable paths toward growth and stability. Many small business owners have the vision and determination to succeed but lack access to financial education and strategic guidance. I want to help close that gap by providing accounting services, tax support, and financial planning that empowers them to succeed. Beyond professional services, I also want to create long-term impact through financial education and mentorship. I plan to develop workshops and training programs focused on budgeting, credit management, taxes, and business development. These programs would be designed to make financial knowledge more accessible and practical, especially for individuals who may not have formal training in business or finance. I also hope to mentor students and young professionals who are interested in accounting and finance, particularly those who may not have representation or guidance in the field. Ultimately, I view education as a tool for service, not just personal advancement. My goal is to use what I learn to create opportunities, reduce financial barriers, and empower others to achieve stability and success. By combining my academic preparation, professional experience, and commitment to service, I plan to build a career that not only reflects achievement, but also meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of others.

Attending higher education is the foundation of my long-term vision to become a Certified Public Accountant and a financial leader who serves entrepreneurs, small businesses, and underserved communities. My academic path—earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, continuing into a Master’s degree in Finance, and ultimately obtaining my CPA license—will equip me with the technical expertise, analytical skills, and professional credibility necessary to create meaningful and lasting impact in the financial world. Higher education will facilitate my goals by providing me with a structured and rigorous understanding of accounting principles, taxation, auditing, financial reporting, and business strategy. These are not just technical skills; they are essential tools that allow professionals to interpret financial data, ensure compliance, and guide decision-making. As I continue my studies, I will gain deeper insight into how businesses operate, how financial systems function, and how strategic financial planning can determine whether a business thrives or fails. This knowledge is critical to my long-term goal of supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners who often lack access to high-quality financial guidance. My academic experience at Texas State University has already shown me how higher education builds discipline and resilience. Maintaining a 3.9 GPA while working two jobs has required me to develop strong time management, focus, and accountability. Balancing an early morning position at my campus recreation center with a paid tax internship at Intuit taught me how to apply classroom knowledge to real-world financial situations while managing competing responsibilities. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to excellence and prepared me for the demands of advanced education and a professional accounting career. Beyond technical skills, higher education also develops critical thinking, communication, and leadership abilities. These skills are essential because my future work will not only involve analyzing numbers but also explaining financial concepts to individuals who may not have a background in accounting or finance. Many small business owners struggle not because they lack ambition, but because they lack access to clear and reliable financial information. Through my education, I will learn how to bridge that gap by translating complex financial data into actionable insights that help people make informed decisions. In the future, I plan to create a positive impact by combining my education with service-driven leadership. My goal is to build a career in accounting and financial consulting where I support entrepreneurs, startups, and small businesses, particularly those in underserved communities. I want to help individuals understand their finances, manage taxes effectively, build strong credit, and develop sustainable business strategies. I believe that financial literacy is a powerful tool that can transform lives, reduce economic inequality, and strengthen communities. In addition to providing professional services, I also plan to invest in education and mentorship. I want to create workshops, training programs, and mentorship opportunities that teach financial literacy and business fundamentals. These programs would be designed to empower individuals to take control of their financial futures and build long-term stability. I also hope to mentor students and young professionals who are interested in accounting and finance, especially those who may not have access to guidance or representation in the field. Higher education will also prepare me to uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism as a CPA. Trust is the foundation of the accounting profession, and my education will reinforce the importance of integrity, accuracy, and accountability in all aspects of financial work. I want to be known not only for my technical competence but also for my ethical leadership and commitment to doing what is right, even when it is difficult. Ultimately, attending higher education is not just about personal advancement—it is about preparation for service. It will equip me with the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills needed to create meaningful change in the lives of others. My goal is to use my education to open doors for others, strengthen businesses, and contribute to the economic empowerment of individuals and communities. Through hard work, continued learning, and a commitment to impact, I plan to use my education as a platform to build a legacy of service, excellence, and positive change.

My personal faith has been a foundational source of strength, discipline, and direction in my life. It has helped me remain grounded during seasons of pressure, uncertainty, and heavy responsibility. As a student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with plans to continue into a Master’s in Finance, I have had to balance academic demands, work responsibilities, and long-term career preparation while maintaining a 3.9 GPA at Texas State University. In those moments when I felt overwhelmed or exhausted, my faith reminded me that my efforts have purpose and that perseverance through challenges is part of my growth. One of the most meaningful ways my faith has helped me is by teaching me patience and trust in the process. Working two jobs while attending school full-time, including an early morning role at my campus recreation center and a tax consultant internship with Intuit, required a level of discipline that often stretched me beyond my comfort zone. There were times when I had to rely on faith to keep moving forward, especially when my schedule felt overwhelming or when I questioned whether I was doing enough. My faith reminded me that consistency, integrity, and effort matter even when results are not immediate. My faith has also shaped the way I view purpose and service. I believe my gifts are not just for personal success, but to help others and contribute to something greater than myself. This perspective is what drives my passion for accounting and finance, especially my desire to support entrepreneurs and small business owners. I see financial knowledge as a tool that can reduce stress, create opportunity, and strengthen families and communities. My faith encourages me to use my education not only for career advancement, but also for meaningful impact. Looking ahead, I believe my faith will continue to guide my career by shaping my values and decision-making. As I pursue my goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant, I know I will face situations that require integrity, ethical judgment, and responsibility. My faith will serve as a moral compass, ensuring that I remain committed to honesty, transparency, and professionalism in all aspects of my work. It will also help me stay humble and focused, even as I achieve new levels of success. Additionally, my faith will help me remain resilient in a demanding profession. Accounting and finance require precision, accountability, and the ability to manage pressure. I believe my faith will give me the emotional strength to handle challenges, learn from setbacks, and continue growing without losing sight of my purpose. Ultimately, my faith is not separate from my goals—it is what sustains them. It has taught me discipline in my studies, integrity in my work, and compassion in my interactions with others. As I continue my journey, I will carry my faith with me as a guiding force that shapes not only my career, but the kind of person and leader I strive to become.

I plan to use my talents in accounting, financial analysis, and communication to help build a more empathetic and financially informed global community. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with plans to earn a Master’s degree in Finance and become a Certified Public Accountant. As a student at Texas State University, I have maintained a 3.9 GPA while balancing two jobs, including an early morning role at my campus recreation center and a paid internship as a tax consultant with Intuit. These experiences have strengthened not only my technical skills, but also my ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds in moments that often require patience, clarity, and understanding. One of my unique strengths is my ability to translate complex financial information into language that everyday people can understand. Many individuals and small business owners feel overwhelmed when dealing with taxes, budgeting, or financial planning. I have learned that when people are given clear explanations and treated with respect, their stress decreases and their confidence increases. I want to use this skill to bridge the gap between financial systems and the people they are meant to serve. By making financial knowledge more accessible, I can help individuals make informed decisions that improve their lives and reduce long-term stress. I also bring empathy shaped by my own lived experience as a student balancing academics, employment, and personal responsibility. Managing multiple roles while maintaining academic excellence has taught me the importance of patience, resilience, and understanding others’ struggles without judgment. This perspective allows me to connect with people in a genuine way, especially those who feel overwhelmed or left behind by systems that were not designed with them in mind. In the future, I plan to use my CPA license and financial expertise to support entrepreneurs, small business owners, and underserved communities globally. I want to help individuals not only understand their finances but also build sustainable businesses that contribute to economic stability in their communities. Through financial education workshops, mentorship programs, and client-focused advisory services, I aim to empower people to take control of their financial futures. Beyond technical support, I believe building a more empathetic global community requires listening and understanding people’s stories. Financial challenges are often tied to deeper life circumstances, and I want to approach my work with compassion and awareness. Whether working with clients locally or on a broader scale, I want people to feel seen, respected, and supported. Ultimately, I will use my skills to create access, understanding, and opportunity. My goal is not only to succeed professionally, but to ensure that my work contributes to a world where financial knowledge is a tool for empowerment rather than a source of confusion or fear.

The story that changed mine most was my mother’s. Watching her work hard, make sacrifices, and continue pushing forward despite challenges taught me the meaning of resilience and determination. She showed me that success is not handed to you; it is earned through discipline, faith, and perseverance. Growing up, I saw firsthand how difficult it can be to balance responsibilities while still trying to create a better future for your family. Her strength inspired me to approach my own goals with the same mindset. Her story especially influenced the way I view education and opportunity. I learned that education is one of the most powerful tools for changing the direction of your life and creating generational impact. Because of her example, I pushed myself academically while working two jobs and attending Texas State University full-time, where I maintained a 3.9 GPA. Even during stressful moments, I reminded myself that perseverance and sacrifice would eventually open doors for my future. Her story also shaped my passion for helping entrepreneurs and small business owners. I understand how financial stress can affect families and communities, which is why I want to become a CPA and use my education to help others build financial stability and long-term success. Her life taught me that true success is not only about personal achievement, but about creating opportunities for others and leaving a positive impact on the people around you. One day, I hope to create a full-service accounting and financial consulting firm that specializes in supporting entrepreneurs, startups, and small businesses, particularly minority-owned businesses and underserved communities. First Generation Scholarship For Underprivileged Students
I am a dedicated accounting student with a strong academic foundation and a clear long-term vision for my future in finance. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with plans to earn a Master’s degree in Finance and ultimately become a Certified Public Accountant. As a student at Texas State University, I have maintained a 3.9 GPA while balancing two jobs, including an early morning position at my campus recreation center and a paid internship as a tax consultant with Intuit. These experiences have shaped me into someone who understands discipline, time management, and perseverance at a deep level. What defines me most is my commitment to growth despite challenges. Being a first-generation college student has meant learning how to navigate higher education, career development, and financial responsibilities largely through experience and persistence. There were many moments where I had to figure things out on my own, but those challenges strengthened my independence and determination. I learned that success is not just about intelligence, but about consistency, resilience, and the willingness to keep going even when the path is unclear. I plan to inspire and motivate other first-generation students by being transparent about my journey and leading through example. I want others to see that it is possible to pursue higher education while managing multiple responsibilities and still excel academically. By sharing my experiences balancing work, school, and internships, I hope to show that struggle does not disqualify you from success—it can actually prepare you for it. Representation matters, and I want students who come from similar backgrounds to see that their goals are achievable. Beyond sharing my story, I plan to actively mentor and support students through academic and career guidance. After completing my education and becoming a CPA, I intend to stay involved in programs that support first-generation and underrepresented students in business and finance. I also hope to provide financial literacy workshops and mentorship opportunities that help students understand not only how to succeed in college, but also how to prepare for careers beyond it. In addition, I want to use my future career to create pathways for others. Whether through internships, networking opportunities, or educational programs within my future accounting and consulting work, I want to help students gain exposure to careers in accounting and finance early on. I understand how powerful it is to have someone believe in you, guide you, and show you what is possible. Ultimately, my goal is to be a source of encouragement and proof that first-generation students can thrive in higher education. I want my journey to inspire others to push past fear, embrace opportunity, and pursue their goals with confidence, knowing that their background is not a limitation but a strength.
Dr. Christine Lawther First in the Family Scholarship
    1. Being the first person in my family to earn a college degree means a lot to me because it represents hard work, opportunity, and growth. It is something I am very proud of, not just for myself, but for my family as well. Seeing the sacrifices my family has made to support me has motivated me to stay focused and continue pushing myself, even during difficult times. Being first-generation can feel overwhelming at times because there is a lot to figure out on your own, but it has also made me more independent and determined. I want to set an example for my younger family members and show them that higher education is possible with dedication and effort. To me, earning a degree is about creating a better future not only for myself, but also for the people around me. 2. In college, I have chosen to pursue accounting, and work toward becoming a CPA. I have always enjoyed working with numbers and solving problems, but what interests me most about accounting is that it goes beyond math and organization. Accounting helps businesses and individuals make important financial decisions, and I like the idea of having a career where I can make a real difference in helping people manage their finances and plan for the future. I am also interested in financial literacy and learning how businesses can grow responsibly while remaining financially stable. Through college, I hope to continue building my knowledge, communication skills, and professionalism so I can become successful in my field and confident in my abilities. 3. My long-term goal is to become a CPA and build a successful career where I can help businesses and individuals achieve financial stability and success. I want a career that challenges me, allows me to continue learning, and gives me opportunities to grow professionally and personally. In the future, I also hope to use my knowledge to give back to communities that may not always have access to financial education or resources. I believe financial literacy is extremely important, and I would like to help people feel more confident when it comes to budgeting, saving, taxes, and planning for their future. Beyond career success, my biggest goal is to create a stable and comfortable future for myself and my family while also making a positive impact on others through my work and the way I support my community.

The legacy of Albert Dono Ware reflects values that still inspire people today, especially service, sacrifice, and bravery. Those values have shaped my personal journey by teaching me the importance of perseverance, responsibility, and helping others even when situations become difficult. Over time, I have realized that success is not only about personal accomplishments, but also about the impact you leave on the people around you and the way you contribute to your community. These values have motivated me to continue pushing myself academically and personally while also thinking about how I can use my future career to create opportunities for others. As someone pursuing a career in accounting and working toward becoming a CPA, I want to use my education and skills to help people gain financial stability and access to opportunities that may not always be available to them. I have seen how financial struggles can affect families and entire communities, especially within parts of the African diaspora in the United States. Many people continue to face challenges such as economic inequality, underfunded schools, limited access to financial literacy, and barriers to career advancement. These issues can make it difficult for families to build long-term stability and generational wealth. Because of this, I believe service means using the knowledge and opportunities I gain to help others improve their circumstances and feel more confident about their future. The values of bravery and sacrifice are important because meaningful change is rarely easy or immediate. It takes courage to speak up about unfair systems and continue working toward progress even when solutions are complicated or change happens slowly. One of the biggest challenges facing the African diaspora today is the racial wealth gap, which affects access to education, housing, healthcare, and career opportunities. Many communities are still dealing with the effects of generations of inequality, which makes it harder for people to break cycles of poverty or gain equal access to resources. I believe one of the most important reforms is increasing access to financial education and mentorship programs in underserved communities. Many students graduate school without ever learning practical financial skills such as budgeting, taxes, saving, investing, or understanding credit. These are skills that can have a major impact on someone’s ability to succeed financially later in life. Introducing financial literacy programs earlier in schools could help young people feel more prepared and empowered when entering adulthood. I also believe mentorship programs are important because students benefit from seeing successful professionals who understand their experiences and can guide them toward opportunities they may not have considered before. In addition, stronger investment in schools, scholarships, and community development programs is critical. Businesses and organizations should also play a role by creating internships, fair hiring opportunities, and partnerships that support underserved communities. Policymakers, educators, business leaders, and community members all need to work together because lasting change cannot happen through the efforts of one group alone. The legacy of service, sacrifice, and bravery reminds me that real leadership is about helping others and contributing to something larger than yourself. In my future career, I hope to use my knowledge to help people gain financial confidence, create opportunities, and encourage positive change within communities. Even small actions can make a difference over time, and I believe progress happens when people continue showing up for their communities and supporting one another through challenges.

Sustainability should be a priority in the accounting field because businesses have a huge impact on the environment through the decisions they make every day. Accounting is no longer just about tracking numbers and making profits. It is also about helping companies make responsible decisions that will benefit them in the long run. Sustainable practices can help businesses reduce waste, lower costs, and create a better reputation with customers and the community. As environmental issues continue to grow, more people expect businesses to care about more than just money and focus on how their actions affect the world around them. In the future, I hope to use my career in accounting to help businesses become more environmentally responsible while still being financially successful. As I work toward becoming a CPA, I want to help companies and small businesses understand that sustainability and profitability can go together. For example, reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and investing in sustainable technology can save businesses money over time while also helping the environment. I also want to encourage honesty and accountability when companies report their environmental efforts so customers and communities can trust the information they share. Even though accounting may not seem directly connected to sustainability at first, I believe accountants can still play an important role in helping businesses make better decisions that positively affect both people and the environment. Accountants are involved in budgeting, planning, and analyzing financial information, so they often have a voice in the decisions companies make. If a business is wasting resources or spending money inefficiently, accountants can help identify those problems and suggest better alternatives. Sustainability is also important because businesses are being held to higher standards than before. Customers pay attention to how companies treat the environment, and businesses that ignore sustainability can damage their reputation or even face financial and legal problems in the future. Because of this, I think it is important for businesses to start making more responsible choices now instead of waiting until problems become worse. I also believe sustainability matters because future generations will be affected by the decisions people and businesses make today. Every career field has some responsibility to contribute to positive change, and accounting is no exception. In my future career, I want to help businesses succeed financially while also encouraging them to operate in a more ethical and responsible way. Even small changes, like reducing unnecessary waste or choosing more efficient systems, can make a difference over time. When many businesses begin making those changes together, the impact can be much larger. To me, sustainability is not just about protecting the environment — it is about creating a future where businesses can continue to grow and succeed without harming the world around them.

I plan to create a legacy by using my education, career, and life experiences to help others build financial stability, opportunity, and generational success. My goal is not only to become a Certified Public Accountant, but also to become someone who empowers entrepreneurs and small business owners with the financial knowledge and guidance they need to succeed. I want my legacy to be centered around service, leadership, and creating opportunities for people who may not otherwise have access to quality financial education or mentorship. One day, I hope to create a full-service accounting and financial consulting firm that specializes in supporting entrepreneurs, startups, and small businesses, particularly minority-owned businesses and underserved communities. I want my business to provide accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, financial planning, and business strategy services while also educating clients on how to build sustainable and profitable companies. Beyond offering services, I want my business to become a trusted resource where entrepreneurs feel supported, informed, and empowered to grow their businesses confidently. I also hope to use my future business to mentor young professionals and students who are pursuing careers in accounting, finance, and entrepreneurship. Representation matters, and I want young Black women especially to see someone who looks like them succeeding in business and leadership while remaining authentic, compassionate, and driven. I want my success to inspire others to believe that they can overcome obstacles and achieve goals that may once have seemed impossible. I shine my light by leading through perseverance, discipline, and encouragement. While attending Texas State University full-time, I maintained a 3.9 GPA while working two jobs, including a position at my campus recreation center and a paid internship with Intuit. Even during difficult seasons, I continued pushing forward because I understood that my actions could inspire someone else who may be silently watching my journey. I try to lead by example by showing kindness, maintaining integrity, and refusing to give up when challenges arise. I also shine my light by helping others feel encouraged and supported. Whether through academics, work, or daily interactions, I try to remind people that their circumstances do not define their future. My faith, resilience, and commitment to personal growth allow me to approach life with purpose and gratitude. I believe true success is not only measured by personal accomplishments, but by how many lives you positively impact along the way. Ultimately, I want my legacy to reflect hard work, compassion, leadership, and service. I want to be remembered as someone who used her knowledge, experiences, and opportunities to uplift others and create lasting change within her community.

**1. Whose story changed yours?** The story that changed mine most was my mother’s. --- **2. Describe a problem in your community that most people walk past. What do you notice that others don't, and what would you do if you had the resources to act?** One problem I notice in my community that many people overlook is the lack of financial literacy and business education available to small business owners and working families. Many people have talent, strong work ethic, and entrepreneurial ideas, but they struggle because they do not fully understand budgeting, taxes, credit, bookkeeping, or financial planning. As a result, businesses fail, debt increases, and families remain trapped in cycles of financial instability. What I notice that others may not is that many people are not failing because they lack ambition; they are failing because they lack access to financial knowledge and trusted guidance. I have seen how confusing financial systems can be, especially for first-generation entrepreneurs and underserved communities. Small mistakes with taxes, bookkeeping, or credit can create major setbacks that many people are never taught how to avoid. If I had the resources to act, I would create a financial literacy and business development program focused on helping underserved entrepreneurs and families. I would offer free workshops on budgeting, taxes, credit repair, bookkeeping, and business planning, along with mentorship opportunities and access to financial professionals. I would also create programs specifically designed to support minority-owned small businesses because they are often underfunded despite their potential to strengthen communities and create jobs. My goal is to become a CPA and combine accounting, finance, and entrepreneurship to help people build sustainable futures. I believe financial education can change lives, and if given the opportunity and resources, I would dedicate myself to making that impact on a larger scale.
Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation-Mary Louise Lindsey Service Scholarship
One of the most meaningful ways I have served others was through my work as a tax consultant intern with Intuit, where I assisted individuals and families who needed help understanding and filing their taxes. Many of the people I worked with were overwhelmed, financially stressed, or uncertain about how tax laws applied to their situations. Some were small business owners trying to support their families, while others were individuals who simply needed someone patient enough to guide them through a complicated process. Being able to help people during moments of uncertainty showed me how powerful knowledge, compassion, and service can be. What inspired me to take action was my passion for helping others create financial stability and confidence. I have always believed that financial literacy is one of the most important tools a person can have, yet many people do not have access to reliable guidance or support. I understood that something as simple as helping someone properly file their taxes or understand deductions could reduce stress and positively impact their financial future. Knowing I could use my education and skills to help people motivated me to serve with patience and empathy. At the same time, balancing this internship while attending Texas State University full-time and working another job was extremely challenging. I often had long days that began early in the morning and ended late at night. There were moments when I felt physically exhausted and mentally overwhelmed trying to maintain my responsibilities while also preserving my 3.9 GPA. However, those challenges taught me resilience, discipline, and sacrifice. More importantly, they taught me that service often requires commitment even when it is inconvenient or difficult. This experience completely changed my understanding of leadership and service. I realized that leadership is not always about recognition or authority; it is about being willing to show up for others, especially during stressful moments. Sometimes the greatest impact comes from listening, encouraging, and helping people feel seen and supported. Through my interactions with clients, I learned that many people simply needed someone who would treat them with respect and genuinely care about helping them succeed. My faith also grew stronger through this experience. There were many moments when I relied on faith to stay motivated and continue pushing forward despite exhaustion and pressure. I began to understand that my ability to help others was not only an opportunity, but also a responsibility. Faith taught me to approach service with humility, gratitude, and compassion. It reminded me that success is not just about personal accomplishments, but about how we use our gifts to positively impact others. As I continue pursuing my goals of becoming a CPA and helping entrepreneurs and small business owners, I carry these lessons with me. Service has taught me that even small acts of support can create lasting change in someone’s life. Leadership has taught me to lead through consistency, empathy, and integrity. Faith has taught me to trust the process and continue serving others with purpose, even when challenges arise.

One of the things that makes me different is my ability to remain determined and disciplined even when life requires me to carry multiple responsibilities at once. As a Black female student pursuing a career in accounting and finance, I have learned how to balance academic excellence, professional growth, and personal sacrifice while continuing to push myself toward my goals. While attending Texas State University full-time, I maintained a 3.9 GPA while working two jobs, including an early morning position at my campus recreation center and a paid internship as a tax consultant with Intuit. These experiences shaped me into someone who understands the value of perseverance, consistency, and purpose. What truly makes me different, however, is not just my ability to overcome challenges, but my commitment to turning those challenges into motivation for others. I understand that people are always watching, even when we do not realize it. Sometimes the way we carry ourselves, handle adversity, or continue moving forward during difficult moments becomes an example for someone else who may be struggling silently. I have learned that leadership is not always about having a title or standing in front of a crowd. Often, leadership is demonstrated through everyday actions, discipline, and integrity. I leverage my uniqueness by choosing to remain focused on my goals despite obstacles and by showing others that success is possible even when circumstances are difficult. There were many days when balancing work, academics, and personal responsibilities felt overwhelming, but I continued showing up for myself and my future. I believe that seeing someone pursue excellence despite hardship can inspire others to believe in their own potential. Whether it is another young Black woman pursuing higher education, a student working multiple jobs, or someone who feels discouraged by their circumstances, I want my journey to show that determination and faith in yourself can create opportunities that once seemed impossible. I am also passionate about helping entrepreneurs and small business owners because I know how important access to financial knowledge and support can be. My goal is not only to become a Certified Public Accountant, but also to use my education to empower others through financial literacy, business strategy, and mentorship. I want people to see that success is not only about personal achievement, but about using your knowledge and experiences to uplift others. In Fall 2026, I will transfer to Southern Methodist University as an Honors Scholar, continuing my journey toward earning my accounting degree, a master’s degree in finance, and ultimately my CPA license. Every step I take is bigger than myself because I know someone may be inspired simply by watching me refuse to give up. I want my story to remind others that resilience, hard work, and purpose can create a lasting impact, even when we may never fully realize who we have inspired along the way.

As a Black female accounting student with a 3.9 GPA, my career interest is centered on becoming a Certified Public Accountant while building a career that empowers entrepreneurs and small businesses through financial education, strategic planning, and ethical accounting practices. I plan to earn both a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Finance because I believe a strong understanding of accounting, taxation, financial management, and business strategy will allow me to make a meaningful impact in underserved communities and among growing businesses. My long-term goal is to become a trusted financial advisor and business consultant who helps entrepreneurs build sustainable and profitable companies. My passion for accounting developed from my interest in how businesses operate and grow. I quickly realized that many entrepreneurs, especially small business owners, struggle because they lack access to quality financial guidance. Poor bookkeeping, tax issues, budgeting challenges, and limited financial literacy often prevent businesses from reaching their full potential. I want to help close that gap by providing services that not only ensure compliance but also help business owners understand their finances and make informed decisions. I am especially passionate about supporting minority-owned and small businesses because they are essential to economic growth and community development. To achieve my goals, I have committed myself to academic excellence and personal discipline. Maintaining a 3.9 GPA has required consistency, time management, and determination. I understand that success in accounting and finance requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to solve complex problems, so I continuously challenge myself to improve both academically and professionally. My coursework has strengthened my understanding of financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation, and business principles, while also teaching me how to think critically and communicate effectively. In addition to my academic achievements, I have gained practical experience through work and professional opportunities. I worked at my campus recreation center early in the mornings before attending classes, which taught me responsibility, discipline, and the importance of balancing multiple commitments. At the same time, I completed a paid internship as a tax consultant with Intuit, where I gained hands-on experience assisting taxpayers and learning how tax laws affect individuals and businesses. Balancing work, internships, and academics while maintaining a high GPA has strengthened my resilience and work ethic. I have also taken intentional steps toward becoming a CPA by researching state licensing requirements, preparing for advanced coursework, and developing the professional skills needed for long-term success in the accounting industry. Earning my CPA license is important to me because it represents professionalism, credibility, and expertise. I believe the CPA designation will allow me to expand my opportunities and better serve future clients with integrity and confidence. Beyond technical skills, I am committed to lifelong learning and leadership. I actively seek opportunities to grow through networking, mentorship, and professional development because I understand that the business world is constantly evolving. My educational journey has taught me that success is not only measured by personal achievement, but also by the ability to create opportunities and positive change for others. Ultimately, my career goal is to combine my education, professional experience, and passion for entrepreneurship to help businesses succeed financially and strategically. I want to be a resource for entrepreneurs who need guidance, encouragement, and financial expertise. Through hard work, education, and perseverance, I am taking the necessary steps to turn my goals into reality and build a career that creates lasting impact in both the accounting profession and the communities I serve.
