This last Football Cheer season I broke my ankle and couldn't walk for 6 weeks. I started out on crutches but I was very uncoordinated and kept falling, later on, I upgraded to a knee scooter and I begged my coach to let me cheer with the team. She agreed and always pushed me to be positive and never give up even with my injury. I kept cheering every Friday night and had such positive feedback from my community to keep a smile on my face while doing something that I loved and that made me happy. My coach and I bonded because she broke her ankle a couple of years before so we related to the struggle. She is the best coach I have ever met and if she could get to where she is today then so can I even if my injury took my senior year away from me she kept me going and always put a smile on my face. She included me in all the team activities and lifted my scooter onto the bus. The injury challenged my character because it was so hard to stay positive and have an uplifting spirit but I think it made me see all the good in the world and in people. It made me appreciative of simple things like being able to walk and being able to drive. Others don't get that privilege so I will never take it for granted again. I believe I exemplify the traits that David G. Sutton valued because I learned the most significant trait of all is to never give up. I am the biggest cheerleader on and off the field and believe that it is not hard to make someone's day just by giving them a friendly smile because you never know what someone is going through. It is my mission that one day people look back at my time as an athlete and teammate and think that I made a positive impact on somebody's life just like David did for so many. I try so hard to be a role model on and off the cheer mat. In many situations, I try to think of what my coach would do and how would she persevere through the challenge, and having role models like that in the sports industry is so important which is why the remembrance of David is important. I value what he did for so many and I wish to accomplish half of what he did.
