    Jeune-Mondestin Scholarship
Thank you for the opportunity to apply for the Jeune-Mondestin Scholarship. My name is Layla Arredondo, a current senior at San Marcos High School, with deep aspirations of continuing my education to pursue a Bachelor of Kinesiology. I have been accepted to Texas State University and will begin my college career in the fall of 2026. Upon graduating from Texas State University, I plan to continue my education and pursue a master’s degree in biology, pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam, and work towards a career path on becoming a Certified Physician Assistant in the dermatology field. With a career in dermatology, one of my main goals is to help children suffering from severe cases of eczema. I witnessed first-hand the impact and discomfort that eczema has on children, For years, my little brother endured many sleepless nights and constant discomfort from this skin condition. After many years of suffering from eczema, fortunately, in 2024, my family found the perfect dermatologist that helped my brother find comfort and prescribed the right treatment for him. The Pediatric Dermatologist and Physician Assistant took the time to listen to my brother’s story of pain, scabs, bleeding, constant itching, and discomfort. After several trials of different medications and practices, they finally found the right treatment plan for him. I am happy to share that while he may still have eczema, his flare ups and discomfort have severely subsided. I witnessed first-hand, what one person did that greatly impacted by little brother’s life. I want to be that person for someone else and support them. I want to be the difference in helping a child find comfort and peace in their own skin. This scholarship would allow me to pay for a portion of my tuition as I did not qualify for financial aid. This would also help my family, as there would be two students attending college. While my parents would do everything possible to help me pay for college, I plan to be responsible and pay for a portion of my education. My parents are two of the hardest working people, and I want to help contribute and do my part as well. My first year of college would cost $30,000+. I also take into consideration that my family is also paying for my sibling’s college tuition which is $15,000+ a year. This scholarship will make a tremendous impact, as every bit of scholarship money would be applied to my education. If selected with the honor of receiving this scholarship, I will dedicate my career to help others with not only skin conditions, but also to provide hope, relief, and make them comfortable in their own skin. I know that I am going to make a difference in the lives of many people, and I am excited to begin my journey!

I know that I am going to make a difference in the lives of many people, and I am excited to begin my journey! For your reference, below is my essay, “Living a Life with Purpose.” I thank you in advance for your consideration and taking the time to read my essay. “Living a Life with Purpose” If I could fill a toolbox with life lessons, I would start with the lesson of “Living with Purpose.” Most children grow up measuring time by holidays, summers, or school years. I grew up measuring it by fire shifts, emergency calls, and the sound of my dad reporting to duty. Since 2001, he has lived through a simple belief that has shaped both his career and my understanding of work; if you love your job and love what you do, you will never have to work a day in your life. There are no words that can describe my dad’s loyalty in securing our community, but rather symbols of what make him a leader in the fire service. When I think of my dad, I see much more than just a firefighter. I see symbols that tell the story of who he is and what he stands for: a badge, helmet, radio, fire truck, and bunker gear. All these objects each individually represent pride, honor, sacrifice, and integrity, and through them, my dad has helped shape the heart of our community and taught me the lessons below. To begin with, the badge is worn over the heart for a reason. It represents a brave heart, one that places others before self. Whether silver or gold, it is earned through years of dedication and commitment to the community. My dad has always taught me that every rank deserves respect because every firefighter, regardless of title, willingly puts their life on the line. Through his words and actions, I learned that leadership is not about authority, but about selflessness and responsibility. The helmet represents stories that words cannot tell. If you look closely, you can see years of service etched into its surface through blackened soot, scraped edges, and worn markings. Each mark is a memory, a moment where my dad stood between danger and someone in need. For example, I remember watching him on the news during a devastating flood, performing a live swift water rescue on LBJ Drive in San Marcos. As a child, what I saw through the TV screen was not just a firefighter, but rather a hero. I watched the current rush around him, yet pride filled me just as strongly; I knew he put the community before himself. I was scared for him, but I could only imagine the courage it took for him to step forward despite that fear. That moment taught me how selfless first responders are and how willing they are to put the community before themselves. The radio is perhaps the most powerful symbol of all. It is a lifeline, constantly connecting firefighters to one another and to the people they serve. It carries emergency calls and everyday communication that keeps calls running smoothly. Yet it is also the voice that delivers the heaviest moments, whether announcing a retirement or honoring a line of duty death. Through the radio, I have learned that communication saves lives and that being connected to others is one of the greatest responsibilities a person can carry. The fire truck represents a different kind of memory, one filled with childhood wonder and pride. I remember the days my dad came to my school, Hernandez Elementary, for Career Day, pulling in with lights flashing and sirens echoing across the playground. I felt like the luckiest kid alive as I watched my classmates’ faces light up. He brought his crew, handed out plastic fire helmets and stickers, and let us climb inside the truck. This moment showed how my first responder dad did not just secure the community by saving lives, but how he made children’s days through a simple act. The bunker gear tells stories that stay long after the fire is out. Stained with sweat, oil, and sometimes blood, it carries the weight of fear, perseverance, and determination. It is protection, but it is also proof of sacrifice. Every mark reflects a moment when my dad chose to serve others before himself. While my dad’s service has secured our community, it has also shaped our family in quiet and difficult ways. Long 24-hour shifts meant missed holidays, volleyball tournaments, and family gatherings. There were moments when his absence was deeply felt, but his purpose was always understood. When I recently asked him how he felt about missing so many special moments, he answered without hesitation. No firefighter wants to miss their child’s events, but it is something they accept to keep their family, friends, and neighbors safe. My dad loves his job so deeply that he often says he wishes he could do it forever. Through him, I have learned that service is not a single act, but a lifelong commitment, one built on sacrifice, leadership, and heart. Watching him secure our community has inspired me to live with the same sense of purpose, to lead with compassion, and to serve others with integrity. His legacy is not only written in the fires he has fought or the lives he has helped save, but in the values, he has instilled in me, values I will carry forward long after the sirens fade.

    Jimmy Cardenas Community Leader Scholarship
Everyone focuses on where the light is shining, where your life is rich, where one is presented as successful and victorious. However, I believe that the most significant thing behind success is the mistakes you make; you need to fall numerous times in order to stand back up on your own two feet. Personally, I have learned as an athlete, student, and young adult, that the most valuable thing you can achieve from mistakes is how you perceive your errors and adjust them to accomplish your next attempt. One significant element that has made me an improved athlete is how I transform the misconceptions to adapt the style of play. As an athlete, I have made various errors: being benched, cut from a team, and experiencing a failing season of winning only one out of 11 games. However, I did not let those mistakes define who I am as a person or athlete. The way I perceive it is either you let those mistakes control your mentality, or you modify those mistakes. Once I applied these principles to my understanding, my character changed from a benched athlete to a starting competitor. My errors have led me to achieve my success: qualifying for a national team, becoming a varsity starter, receiving university letters for athletics, and acquiring the titles of “All Academic District” as well as “District Honorable Mention”. Furthermore, my academic status can display how mistakes lead to success. To illustrate, my former character of academic achievement was a struggle; I battled to comprehend numerical equations, fight against procrastination, and clashed with putting the spotlight on scholarly lessons. Nevertheless, I learned to not let these battles interfere with my academics, instead I decided to correct my distractions. I reshaped my scholastic aspect by striving for all A's, improving my performance, and aiming to comprehend lectures fluently. An additional key factor that leads to the idea that accomplishment is acquired through mistakes can be displayed through my personal experience as a young adult. Recently, I have had many encounters of “adult-like” situations that have failed continuously. For instance, I keep applying to jobs only to be turned down persistently. Even though I’m still on the ground, I know how I “fell” and know the corrections to make in order to get back up on my feet in order to succeed. As a young adult, I have lots of new things to learn and grow from; one factor I will carry with me is to keep striving and not let mistakes overtake me or affect me mentally. In conclusion, my errors have led me to discover a portal of accomplishments. The most significant thing behind success is the mistakes you make and how you apply them to accomplish your next attempt. You can’t go anywhere or learn anything if you’re afraid of making mistakes; don’t be afraid of errors, it’s one step closer to success. “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” – Henry Ford Thank you for taking the time to read my essay and for the opportunity to apply to the Jimmy Cardenas Community Leader Scholarship.

    Matthew Hoover Memorial Scholarship
Everyone focuses on where the light is shining, where your life is rich, where one is presented as successful and victorious. However, I believe that the most significant thing behind success is the mistakes you make; you need to fall numerous times in order to stand back up on your own two feet. Personally, I have learned as an athlete, student, and young adult, that the most valuable thing you can achieve from mistakes is how you perceive your errors and adjust them to accomplish your next attempt. One significant element that has made me an improved athlete is how I transform the misconceptions to adapt the style of play. As a volleyball player and athlete for many years, I have made various errors: being benched, cut from a team, and experiencing a failing season of winning only one out of 11 games. In the words of Henry Ford, "“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”
