Lauryn Blake

Bio

Hi, my name is Lauryn. I am a 21-year-old college student who is an avid learner. I am and always have been very interested in the environment and sustainability. I believe it's important to help our planet. In the future, I would love to work in the fashion industry helping companies with making sustainable choices and marketing their company to others. My life goals are to travel the world, learn and see about new cultures, and help others become more environmentally friendly! I love experiencing new environments. I would like to volunteer, study, or personally visit as many places as I can. This year was my first time out of my home country and I was able to study abroad across Europe and in Costa Rica! I am a hardworking and responsible student who needs aid to pay off tuition. My single mom works two jobs just to support me in college and I would like for her not to worry about the tuition and loans.

Top Watch Newsletter Movie Fanatics Scholarship
As an avid movie lover, picking just one movie to watch for the rest of my life is a tough choice. However, there is one movie I can easily choose above the rest with no hesitation. Whenever this movie is mentioned, friends and family instantly say it reminds them of me. My mom says this was the first movie I watched as a kid. She said I watched it almost every day after she bought me the DVD. It was the only poster in my freshman dorm room. The movie is titled; The Sandlot. If you are unfamiliar with The Sandlot, it follows a group of boys who play baseball in a rundown field next to a junkyard guarded by a beastly dog. When a precious baseball signed by Babe Ruth goes over the fence into the junkyard, the boys must find a way to get it back without disrupting the dog. I don't know why I started to love this movie, but it defined my personality and certain moments in my life. This film began my love for the season of summer. I watch this film in the dead of winter to be reminded of the warmth of the sun and the freedom of summertime. It also sparked my interest in playing softball. I went on to play for 10-plus years throughout my childhood and loved every minute of it. This film also taught me how important it is to have loyal friends and always welcome new people. The main character in the film, Smalls, has a hard time making friends and doesn't play baseball well but because one boy from the group welcomes him with open arms changes, Small's life is changed. The Sandlot is a movie I can watch for eternity because it reminds me of comfort, love, freedom, and who I am as a person. The movie captures childhood in such a way that it brings me back to my 7-year-old self. This film not only brought me nostalgia but also taught me important lessons like always being kind to others, don't be afraid to ask for help, and sometimes it's good to take risks. I recommend this movie to everyone no matter how young or old you are. It is a film I will never forget and will never get tired of. The Sandlot is a film that I can watch on repeat for the rest of my life.
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Math always has a definite answer. I strive for problem-solving either academically or in the real world. Math has aided me to become a stronger problem-solver and critical thinker. Math having definite answers has helped me understand it on a personal level. I've always been a logical and analytical person. I like going through life logically because it has made me a great decision-maker, a good advice-giver, and a quick thinker. Math also always clicks for me and I quickly grew to love it because I am good at it. Not just good, I am excellent at it. Math makes me feel more confident. When doing math problems, I feel as though I have a talent. Rapidly doing multiplications in my head or calculating sale prices for my friends, when they want to buy an item, makes me feel happy. Making sure I always took a math class throughout the high school also made me feel calm. I would be relieved I had a class my brain functioned in. Math may have always come easy for me but it has let me become a better student, friend, and person. All because math revolves around having a definite answer, I feel like I can go through life with decisiveness and confidence.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
"You should sleep over!", is a statement I heard countless times from my friends growing up. I always would say no. A tightness in my chest would grow every time I was away from home. If my mom traveled for work, I would not go stay with family instead I would have someone stay with me at my home. I would panic and break down if I even felt in the slightest overwhelmed. Never knew why I was so uncomfortable until my mom suggested I might have anxiety. I see my anxiety as a curse and a blessing. As I grew older, my anxiety became less and less. I kept pushing myself to do uncomfortable things like class presentations, talking on the phone, and even traveling away from home. My friends helped me a lot without even realizing it. I was comfortable with certain friends so when we would go away on trips, I knew I was going to be okay. My anxiety also allows me to be careful about the decisions I make. Unfortunately, this has caused me to have a lot of regrets in my teenage years. My anxiety allowed me to open up to my friends and family. It was and still is hard for me to talk about my feelings but once I push myself to talk about one thing, it makes it easier to talk about my other feelings. It has also made me realize I am not alone. Talking to friends and seeing posts on social media showed me people who have the same experiences as me and people I can relate to. My anxiety confined me to my home for so many years that now I am ready to be independent and see the world. For so long, my anxiety caused me to miss out on opportunities, say no to everything, and be distant from others. Even though my anxiety is still there, I do not let it become all of who I am. It has now shaped me into someone with adventurous plans for the future and a desire to explore with no regrets.

Our planet is dying and it is not talked about enough. Climate change is the biggest and most worrisome problem the world is facing. The hard truth is without fixing this problem first, there will be no other problems to face. Climate change is mostly caused by humans. It can cause rising sea levels, global warming, more frequent natural disasters, and the extinction of animals. One way to work on climate change is to change people's mindsets. Today, not enough people care about changing their lifestyles to help the environment. People should inform, educate, and convince friends, family, and their community about how their everyday routine is contributing to the earth dying. Big companies are the real contributors to global warming but if enough people in the world change their habits and understand what's happening to our planet, it will soon reach those people working for those big corporate companies. Being sustainable and eco-friendly is only talked about. It is not acted upon. People will see it on the news or read an article but will carry on with their day doing nothing about it. We must start taking action, change people's opinions, persuade them to change how much energy or water they use every day, and help others make living sustainable the norm. Recycling, driving less, composting, deleting your emails, changing to solar power, buying less fast fashion, etc. are just a few small tasks that can help. Unfortunately, it might not help a great deal but once everyone's mindset and lifestyle are eco-friendly, it is a step forward to stopping our earth from dying.
    Bold Creativity Scholarship
I apply creativity through the little things, mostly through collecting stickers and placing them on my possessions. It can be adding environmental stickers to the back of my car to show my appreciation for the planet, the Avatar: The Last Air Bender stickers on my water bottle to show how much I love the cartoon, or the summer-themed ones placed all over my laptop case to show it's my favorite season. It can also be the miscellaneous stickers collected from many places spread across the bottom of my longboard or the collage of stickers on many journals I write in. All these stickers are on random objects but they all show different parts of who I am. Whenever and wherever I collect them, I feel I am adding more of a reflection of myself into my life. The things I love and am passionate about are on tiny pieces of sticky paper. I become more creative when I can turn an ordinary object into something personal and dear to me.
    Bold Bravery Scholarship
"You just have to go through with it and then you will realize it wasn't so bad after all", this is a saying that's stuck with me my whole life. My mom would say it to me before I had a class presentation, a job interview, or anything else that would make me nervous. When I was younger, I had really bad anxiety but this quote helped me through a lot of times and made me braver. The more I practice doing something that makes me uncomfortable, the less scary it is to do. Whether it's as little as making a phone call to as big as living away from home. I always tell myself your worry will be over soon and you'll be glad you did it. It has not only made me braver but also more confident. Over the years I've become more outgoing, adventurous, and eager to live my life to the fullest. The best part about continuing to do brave acts is my anxiety is overcoming me less and less.
Lo Easton's “Wrong Answers Only” Scholarship
    1. I deserve this scholarship because I think it would look cool on my bold profile and being the first scholarship on there. 2. My career goals are to work for a company assisting with their sustainability but, I just want to travel the world. 3. One day I was walking, and I tripped over a plant pot. However, I am resilient and got right back up.
    Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
Personally, generosity means putting others before myself. It is doing and contributing to others without even having to think about it. Generosity is an act that can take up a little time in your day but make both the recipient and the giver feel good. What's best about generosity is that it doesn't always have to be between two people. It can be with animals or the environment. One specific moment that helped me change my views on generosity was a day I was coming home from class. I pull into my driveway and notice my neighbors, an elderly couple, struggling to bring a couch into their home. They had a friend helping them but all three of them were still struggling. I sat there for a moment debating whether to go help. I decided to help them and they thanked me, so ever grateful I came home at the right time. I was glad I took the two minutes of my day to do something for another. I could tell it made their day. Ever since that day, I realized that you shouldn't have to give a lot of thought to doing a selfless act, you just do it. Generosity can mean many things to others but to me, it means doing selfless acts to give a helping hand to others, the world, and yourself.
    Bold Great Books Scholarship
I'll admit, my favorite book is very popular but that's why it's popular right? It's called "One of Us Is Lying" by Karen M. McManus. It's a murder mystery mixed with teen drama. It's about 4 high students who all get blamed for the murder of a student they were in detention with. Each of them says they didn't do it and the book goes through each of their point of view digging themselves into a bigger hole by investigating the murder themselves. "One of Us Is Lying" is my favorite book because I love how the story is told. You don't find out who killed the student until the characters do. You are investigating the murder as you are reading and keeping you engaged. McManus does a wonderful job switching points of view for each suspect because you'll think one person is guilty, but then you learn more about another and your mind changes. The best part of the book is the plot twist towards the end. I won't spoil but let's just say the truth is shocking and interesting. Another reason why this is my favorite book is that it got me into reading. Growing up I didn't like to read and only read books that were assigned in school. When I saw this book trending on TikTok, I decided to get it. I fell in love immediately with the characters and the plot. Their secrets and friendships that bloomed from the investigation made me love the book even more. Once I finished "One of Us Is Lying", I read the sequel. From there I started ordering books left and right. I now love to read in my free time.
    Bold Goals Scholarship
"My five-year Plan". This is a note title you can find in my notes app. This lists all my goals for the next 5 years. I break it down into semesters and each goal I want to accomplish underneath. My upcoming goals are to get a job while in college and save up money. In May 2023, I aim to take a trip to Disneyworld with my best friend. Although I've been before, I would love to experience it with my friend who has never been. Another goal on my list is to take summer courses until my 2024 graduation as well as a sustainability internship. It's important to me to work hard to catch up in school because I declared a major later in my college education. My most exciting and most important goal for me to complete is to study abroad next year. Traveling the world and experiencing new places is everything to me. My desired spot is to study abroad in Italy, specifically at the Florence University of arts. I want to enroll in fashion marketing classes there since I want to go into sustainability business in the fashion industry. After graduating college, I have a plan to take a year off to travel around the world, live places for a couple of months, and have small jobs along the way. The places I plan to travel to and/or live in are Australia, Hawaii, and parts of Europe. Traveling is a priority to me rather than going straight into the workforce. Once I do go into the workforce, my goal is to work for a fashion company, preferably Converse, and work in their sustainability department. Although most of my goals for the future are traveling, I still would like to accomplish goals like internships and graduating.
    Bold Nature Matters Scholarship
I love nature because it feels alive. It's almost like nature wants to you pay attention and appreciate how beautiful it is. My favorite piece of nature are thunderstorms. My heart gets so happy when I hear the loud crack of thunder rolling in or when the sky lights up from a lightning strike. As soon as I see the ominous dark clouds in the distance, my eyes light up. They might be scary to most people, but thunderstorms are what keeps me calm and help calm my anxiety. I appreciate nature by sitting and listening. I love hearing the leaves move softly in the wind or the sound of ocean waves crashing on the shore. I also love listening to the rain hit against the windows or the sound of cicadas buzzing in the trees during the summer. In my living room window, I love seeing all the different birds that come up to the feeder from blue jays to woodpeckers. Most importantly, observing whats around me in nature makes me appreciate the little things.
    Bold Climate Changemakers Scholarship
Every day, I help the environment by doing small things. Not everyone can make big changes to positively impact the climate. Growing up, I've always recycled and reused. My mom was taught that way growing up so naturally so was I. We would go antiquing for furniture and I would watch her revamp it to look new. We would shop at small businesses and antique stores in Maine to add decoration to the house. The best thing is she taught me you can reuse paper towels if one isn't dirty enough to throw away. To reduce my carbon footprint, I shop at small businesses I come across on TikTok, I go thrifting for a lot of my clothes, I reuse old vinyl and paint them for decoration in my room, and I reuse old ice tea cans to pot my plants in. usually, when I have leftover water from my water bottle, I use that water to water my plants in my room. At home, I always make sure the water is never running while brushing my teeth, I turn off lights when they are not in use, I bring reusable bags to the grocery store, and reuse grocery bags as trash bags in my home. I also use reusable straws and water bottles. I've switched to oat milk because less CO2 emissions are produced than cow's milk. Also, I've changed my beauty products to be more positively impactful. The most important thing to do is educate others. I've talked to my friends and family about making better environmentally-friendly changes to their life. Changing your lifestyle to better help the environment may not make a big impact but I believe it is still doing something and that is what matters for our future. Your lifestyle and mindset.
    Bold Career Goals Scholarship
I've always had a hard time deciding what I wanted for myself in the future. Until my sophomore year of college, I had no idea what I wanted to do for my career. Recently, my mind made a connection and I decided on Marketing with a minor in environmental studies. Ever since I was a child, I've had a passion for saving the environment and a passion for clothes and fashion. I thought to myself, "why not have a career that combines the two?" In five years, I see myself working at a fashion industry company, preferably Converse, working in their sustainability department. I want to be able to help them decrease their fast fashion and increase their shoe materials made of recyclable and renewable materials. I want to be able to market ways people will hear and see about this change in the company and how well they are doing. I see myself promoting ideas about companies' sustainability as well as incorporating the world's environmental issues into the brand. I see myself changing the fashion industry for the better. I also see myself traveling the world educating others on sustainability and the environment. I would like to help others change their lifestyles to help this planet.
