    Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship
hey there, scholarship committee, First off, let me say how honored I am to have the opportunity to apply for the Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship. It's genuinely heartwarming to see Christina's memory being honored in such a meaningful way. Now, you might be wondering why a legal assistant like myself is applying for a scholarship in medicine and healthcare. Well, let me tell you a little bit about myself and why I believe it's appropriate for me to apply. My name is Lauren Marie Ell, and while I may not be studying medicine or healthcare academically, I wholeheartedly believe that my field of law intersects with these fields in more ways than one. As a legal assistant, I have worked closely with attorneys specializing in medical malpractice cases, personal injury claims, and healthcare law. Through these experiences, I have gained a deep understanding of the importance of advocating for justice in the healthcare system. I have seen firsthand the impact that medical professionals, such as occupational therapists, can have on the lives of their patients. The ability to help someone regain their independence, improve their quality of life, and overcome physical and mental challenges is genuinely remarkable. This passion for justice and the belief in doing the right thing has drawn me to the field of law and, in turn, my interest in supporting and promoting the work of healthcare professionals. In addition to my legal background, I have always had a keen interest in health, wellness, and the human body. I am an active individual who loves exercising and caring for my physical and mental well-being. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential not only for our own personal well-being but also for our ability to serve others effectively. Pursuing a career in law and remaining committed to my health and wellness, I hope to bring a unique perspective to the field and promote holistic approaches to healthcare. Moreover, I firmly believe in the power of interdisciplinary collaboration. Law and healthcare are not mutually exclusive fields; they complement and support one another. By bridging the gap between these two disciplines, I hope to contribute to the overall improvement of the healthcare system and advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of patients and healthcare professionals alike. So, while my academic focus may be on law, my passion for justice, my interest in health and wellness, and my commitment to making a positive impact in the world align with the goals and values of the Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship. I am eager to continue learning and growing in my chosen field, and I am confident that by receiving this scholarship, I will be better equipped to contribute to the healthcare community in a meaningful way. Thank you for considering my application. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity. Warm regards, Lauren Marie

    Phillip Robinson Memorial Scholarship
Why do I want to practice law? Well, let me tell you, it's not just about the glamour of wearing a power suit or the thrill of arguing in a courtroom (although those things are definitely a plus!). For me, practicing law is about something much deeper and more meaningful. First and foremost, I have a passion for justice. I believe in standing up for what's right and using the law as a tool to create a fair and just society. The thought of making a positive impact on people's lives, fighting for their rights, and seeking justice for the marginalized and oppressed drives me daily. But it's not just about fighting for justice; it's also about being a voice for those who can't speak up for themselves. As a legal professional, I will have the opportunity to advocate for those who have been silenced, fight for their rights, and ensure their voices are heard. It's about leveling the playing field and giving everyone an equal chance at justice. Another reason I want to practice law is my love for high fashion. Okay, I know that might sound a bit superficial, but hear me out. The legal profession is known for its traditional dress code, and I see it as an opportunity to bring a touch of style and elegance to the courtroom. I want to show that you can be fierce and fashionable and don't have to sacrifice your femininity or personal style to excel in the legal field. Additionally, I firmly believe in the power of positivity and doing the right thing. Practicing law allows me to uphold and defend the principles I hold dear. It's about making ethical decisions, treating others with kindness and respect, and always striving to do what's morally right. I want to be a beacon of light in a sometimes dark and challenging world, using the law as a force for good. And let's not forget about the intellectual challenge of practicing law. I thrive in an environment that stimulates my mind and continually pushes me to learn and grow. The legal field offers endless opportunities for intellectual growth and development, allowing me to expand my knowledge and expertise constantly. Finally, practicing law allows me to indulge in my love for good food and comedy. Yes, you read that right. In my downtime, I enjoy exploring the culinary world and seeking out delicious food experiences. And let's face it, a good sense of humor is essential in dealing with the complexities of the legal system. Laughter is truly the best medicine, and it can bring some much-needed levity to the often intense and serious world of law. So, there you have it. I want to practice law because it aligns with my passion for justice, love for high fashion, belief in doing the right thing, thirst for intellectual challenge, and appreciation for good food and comedy. It's not just a career choice; it's a calling that encompasses all aspects of who I am as a person.
    Augustus L. Harper Scholarship
Education, oh education, where would we be without you? You are the key that unlocks the doors to knowledge, opportunity, and success. As a legal assistant, I can't stress enough how important education is in my field. But beyond that, education is crucial in every aspect of life, whether in accounting, finance, business, or any other field. For me, education has been a game-changer. It has not only provided me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in my career, but it has also given me a broader perspective on life. It has opened my eyes to new ideas, different cultures, and diverse ways of thinking. Education has brought immense value to my life by empowering me. It has given me the confidence to face challenges head-on and tackle complex problems. It taught me to think critically, analyze situations, and make informed decisions. Education has equipped me with the tools to navigate the intricacies of the legal world and advocate for justice. But education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it's also about personal growth. It has shaped my character, instilling values of integrity, empathy, and compassion. Through education, I have learned the importance of continuous learning and the pursuit of excellence. Moreover, education has afforded me opportunities I wouldn't have had otherwise. It has opened doors to internships, networking events, and mentorship programs. It has connected me with like-minded individuals who have become lifelong friends and mentors. Education has provided me with a support system that inspires and motivates me. Education is a lifelong journey, and I am grateful for the privilege to embark on it. It has allowed me to continuously evolve, adapt, and stay ahead in a rapidly changing world. It has given me the tools to make a difference, not just in my own life but also in the lives of others. So, why is education important? Because it is the foundation upon which dreams are built. It is the catalyst for personal and societal progress. It is the key to unlocking our full potential. Education brings value by empowering, enlightening, and enriching us in immeasurable ways. In the words of Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Let us honor the legacy of Augustus L. Harper by recognizing the importance of education and supporting BIPOC students in their pursuit of knowledge and success in accounting, finance, and business. Girls Ready to Empower Girls
In a world where the wage gap persists, and discrimination lingers, economic empowerment becomes the key to unlocking young women's potential as they navigate their journey into adulthood. However, with limited mentors in the professional world and gender disparities in male-dominated fields, women need to rally together and support each other to bring about true gender parity in the workforce. This scholarship aims to empower ambitious women who harbor big dreams and have a history of community service. In this essay, I will share a heartfelt story of how a remarkable woman in my life inspired and supported me on my educational and career journey. During my time at community college, I encountered an extraordinary woman who would forever alter the course of my educational and professional pursuits. Her name was Sarah. She was a fellow student who exuded confidence, intelligence, and an unwavering determination to shatter glass ceilings. As fate would have it, Sarah and I found ourselves in the same English class, and from the moment we met, a dynamic friendship began to blossom. Sarah became my mentor, my confidante, and my biggest cheerleader. She possessed a sharp intellect and a profound understanding of women's challenges in pursuing their dreams. Our conversations veered from discussions about literature to the intricacies of navigating the professional world as a woman. Sarah shared her experiences, triumphs, and setbacks, enlightening me about the realities I would soon face. Sarah's impact on my educational journey was profound. She encouraged me to dream big, to set audacious goals, and to never settle for mediocrity. Her unwavering belief in my abilities ignited a fire that propelled me to strive for excellence. She pushed me to apply to top-tier universities, assuring me that my potential knew no bounds. But Sarah's support didn't end with mere encouragement. She recognized my passion for justice and my desire to make a difference in the legal field. With her guidance, Sarah connected me with legal professionals and facilitated internships that allowed me to gain invaluable experience in the legal world. She became my advocate, opening doors and providing opportunities I could never have accessed on my own. Sarah's influence extended far beyond my educational journey. She taught me the importance of women supporting women and lifting each other up rather than tearing each other down. Sarah showed me the power of sisterhood in a world that often pits us against one another. Together, we navigated the challenges of a male-dominated industry, celebrating each other's victories and offering a shoulder to lean on during moments of defeat. Economic empowerment for young women becomes imperative in a society where the wage gap persists and discrimination continues. However, we cannot achieve true equality without women supporting women. My experience with Sarah exemplifies the transformative power of female mentorship and camaraderie. Through her unwavering support, Sarah inspired me to reach for the stars and taught me the importance of uplifting and empowering other women. As I embark on my professional journey as a legal assistant, I carry Sarah's lessons in my heart, ready to pay it forward and inspire other women.

Carole Willis Criminal Justice Reform Scholarship
Dear Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (CAIC), I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Carole Willis, one of your dear members. It is evident that Carole was an incredible person and an invaluable advocate for the cause. Her dedication and commitment to the campaign were truly inspiring, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Carole's involvement in CAIC and the Correctional Association of NY speaks volumes about her passion for justice and desire to make a difference. It is clear that she was not just a bystander but an active participant in the fight against solitary confinement. From her tireless efforts in attending meetings with legislators to her unwavering support during advocacy days in Albany, Carole demonstrated the strength and determination that is necessary to effect change. I am in awe of Carole's commitment. The fact that she would travel long distances to visit prisons, waking up before dawn to catch buses to Albany, shows the extent of her dedication. Even this year, she woke up at the crack of dawn to be a part of your advocacy day for the HALT Solitary Confinement Act. Carole's actions genuinely exemplify the power of perseverance and the impact that a single individual can have. Carole was a champion for CAIC and a remarkable person in her own right. Her involvement as a missionary, her role as a family matriarch, and her commitment to helping others are testament to the beautiful soul that she possessed. Clearly, Carole's legacy extends far beyond her work with the campaign, and her impact will be felt for years to come. In honor of Carole's memory, I would like to apply for the scholarship you have generously offered. As an undergraduate law student, I am passionate about making a difference in the criminal justice system. I believe that addressing important social issues is crucial in effecting meaningful change. One important social issue that I am actively working to address is the overrepresentation of underrepresented minorities in the criminal justice system. It is no secret that there are systemic biases and injustices that disproportionately affect minority communities. I am committed to advocating for fair and equitable treatment for all individuals, regardless of race or ethnicity. To make a difference in the criminal justice system, I plan to use my education and knowledge to challenge and reform the existing structures actively. I aim to work within the legal system to advocate for policies that promote equality, fairness, and rehabilitation. Additionally, I plan to engage in community outreach programs to educate and empower individuals affected by the criminal justice system. By addressing the root causes of systemic inequality and advocating for change, I believe that we can create a more just and compassionate criminal justice system. My goal is to be a voice for those who have been silenced and to work toward a society that values rehabilitation over punishment. Thank you for considering my application. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to honor Carole's memory through my own commitment to making a difference in the criminal justice system. With warm regards, Lauren Marie

As an aspiring attorney with a fervent passion for justice and a commitment to aiding those who cannot help themselves, my approach to making a difference in the world is deeply influenced by the lessons learned from history, cultural anthropology, political science, and geography. In their unique ways, these disciplines provide a comprehensive understanding of the human condition and the societal structures within which we operate, guiding my journey in law and advocacy. From history, I understand the evolution of legal systems and the pivotal moments that have shaped our current societal landscape. This discipline teaches me about the cyclical nature of human events and the importance of learning from past mistakes and triumphs. As someone who has experienced the sting of injustice firsthand, I am particularly attuned to the historical struggles for rights and freedoms. This awareness fuels my determination to contribute to a legal system that upholds justice and equality, ensuring that the errors of the past are not repeated. Cultural anthropology offers me insights into the diverse ways of life and belief systems that exist across the globe. This knowledge is crucial in my pursuit to become an effective advocate for all, especially for those whose voices are often unheard in the corridors of justice. Understanding the cultural contexts that shape individuals' interactions with the legal system enables me to approach each case with empathy and respect for cultural nuances, advocating for laws and policies that are inclusive and respectful of diversity. Political science provides me with an understanding of the mechanisms of power and governance. This awareness is critical to navigating the complex relationship between law and politics. It equips me with the skills to engage in effective advocacy, whether it's through lobbying for policy changes, participating in legislative processes, or challenging unjust laws and practices. Geography, too, plays a significant role in shaping my perspective. It highlights how spatial dynamics influence social and legal issues, such as resource distribution, environmental legislation, and jurisdictional matters. This understanding is vital in addressing legal challenges often rooted in geographical inequalities and advocating for sustainable and equitable solutions. In essence, by integrating the lessons from these diverse but interconnected fields, I aim to be a lawyer who fights for justice in the courtroom and contributes to broader societal change. I strive to use this interdisciplinary knowledge to challenge systemic injustices, advocate for the underprivileged, and work towards a world where the law provides hope and fairness for all.
Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
Reflecting on my journey, I see a tapestry of colorful experiences, challenges, and aspirations that have shaped who I am and what I aim to achieve. My life has been a blend of passion for justice, a love for writing, and a relentless pursuit of my goals, often in the face of adversity. From a young age, writing has been my sanctuary and strength. It's been a medium through which I express myself and make sense of the world around me. This passion for writing has not only been a source of joy but also a tool that has helped me navigate through challenging times. One of the most defining adversities in my life was being wrongfully charged with a burglary at the age of 14. This experience was both harrowing and transformative. It exposed me to the flaws and biases of the legal system, but more importantly, it ignited a fierce determination within me to fight for justice. This incident didn't just shape my character; it crystallized my career aspirations. As an aspiring attorney, my goal is to advocate for those who can't help themselves. This ambition is deeply rooted in my personal experience with injustice. I understand firsthand the impact of legal representation on the lives of individuals, especially those who are underprivileged or wrongfully accused. My dream is to become a double attorney in New York and New Jersey, focusing on representing the less fortunate and ensuring that justice is served. This journey hasn't been without its challenges. My ADHD, for instance, has often made it difficult to maintain focus and organization. However, I've turned this into a strength by learning to adapt and multitask effectively, skills that are invaluable in the fast-paced legal world. Moreover, my upbringing in the suburbs of New Jersey, not far from NYC, has given me a unique perspective on the diverse socio-economic realities and legal challenges faced by different communities. This background has further fueled my commitment to social justice and legal advocacy. In essence, the adversity I've faced has been a catalyst for growth and determination. It has taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of standing up for what is right. These experiences have not only shaped my goals and dreams but have also equipped me with the tools and perspective necessary to achieve them. As I continue on this path, I am driven by a passion for justice, a commitment to helping others, and a desire to leave a positive impact on the world.
    FAR Impact Scholarship
Ever since I was wrongly accused of a heinous crime at the young age of 13, that moment reshaped my whole outlook on life. I remember sitting in a jail cell, confused and hurt, asking god, "God, I know everything happens for a reason" and while I didn't lose my faith, at that point I still didn't realize why I needed to go through that weekend in jail, when I knew in my heart that I was innocent. It was tough, but it lit a fire in me – a burning need to make sure nobody else has to go through that kind of thing alone. Today, I realize that I needed to feel that injustice, so that passion in me to help others stayed within me not just temporarily, but growing for the rest of my life. Since then, I've thrown myself into helping out in my neighborhood. It's not just something I do; it's something I love. Whether it's getting involved in local events, giving free legal advice, or just being there to listen, I've always tried to be someone people can lean on. These moments haven't just changed the lives of others; they've opened my eyes to the bigger issues we all face. Whenever someone tells me about an unfair situation they're in, I can't help but get involved. I ask them everything I need to know to understand their story. I'm not in a place yet where I can take on their cases myself, but I always point them to the best help I know. It's a big part of what I do – helping people find their way through tough times. My dream is to be a lawyer in both New York and New Jersey, focusing on helping people who don't usually get heard. This goal comes straight from my own life and my drive to make things fairer for everyone. I want to be more than a lawyer; I want to be someone who makes real changes, who fights against unfair laws and makes sure justice isn't just for those who can afford it. I'm all in on legal advocacy, especially in public interest law. But for me, it's not just about the courtroom. It's about being a voice for those who don't have one, teaching people about their rights, and tackling the big issues that make things unfair in the first place. I believe every case I take on can do more than just help one person – it can be part of making things better for everyone. In the end, being a lawyer for me isn't just a career choice; it's what I'm meant to do. I feel it in my bones, whenever someone comes to me for legal help. Although I'm not an attorney just yet, I know it's what I've been put on this earth to do. It's all about standing up for what's right, being a beacon of hope for those who really need it, and working towards a world where justice is something everyone can count on. I want to make a real difference, not just in individual lives but in our community as a whole. I see myself being a part of justice reform, helping those who really need it and making big waves of change for a better world.

While researching, I learned how many wrongfully incarcerated people are in jail, especially those in prison for marijuana-related offenses. It made me want to become an attorney to help those wrongfully imprisoned within our system. It's sad to see how many innocent people are in jail because of marijuana-related offenses when so many studies have been done. It has been proven that marijuana is more or less not only safe but beneficial medicinally. Becoming an attorney it takes a lot of hard work a lot of studying a lot of reading, but I've dedicated myself to doing so because I'm very passionate about this topic. As someone who has been wrongfully accused before, in the past, I understand how desperate and awful it may feel to be punished for something you really didn't do. I know everyone in jail says that they are innocent end. It is somewhat of a taboo topic; however, it is one thing that I would like to do more research into and help out with any way I can. Given that the number of federal cannabis inmates—as well as marijuana arrests in general—have been declining, one may assume that this is the case. Unfortunately, there are SIGNIFICANT limitations in the 2007 and 2018 reports. The most obvious problem is with "who" they classify as a cannabis prisoner. Both accounts discuss the total number of individuals detained in state and federal facilities for an extended period. The following groups of people are not taken into account... individuals detained in municipal and county jails (a significant number, given that there were 545,602 arrests for cannabis in 2019). People who are incarcerated right now in our nation's juvenile correctional facilities, Indian county jails, immigration detention facilities, etc.; people who are detained pending trial or sentencing; people whose cannabis offenses are treated as secondary offenses; people who are detained in jurisdictions that don't report their statistics to the national database (in 2021, nearly 40% of local law enforcement agencies failed to report their arrest numbers to the national database); people who are detained before trial or before sentencing; ... those who were on supervised release but were later put back behind bars for technical parole or probation violation involving marijuana. We are aware that marijuana use is disproportionately involved in drug-related offenses that result in re-incarceration for people on supervised release, in particular. i want to help these people. They are not criminals! Marijuana is not a dangerous drug. It is medicine.
