    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
The lyric "They all say that it gets better, it gets better the more you grow / Yeah, they all say that it gets better, it gets better, but what if I don't?" from Olivia Rodrigo's song "teenage dream" poignantly captures the essence of adolescence and its inherent challenges. This line resonates deeply with my own teenage experience, reflecting the uncertainty and vulnerability that often define this transitional period. Adolescence is a time of profound change and self-discovery, marked by intense emotions and a search for identity. The reassurance that "it gets better" is a common refrain offered by adults who have navigated their own teenage years and come out the other side. However, the doubt expressed in the lyric—"but what if I don't?"—mirrors the pervasive fear that one's struggles and insecurities might be insurmountable or permanent. This sentiment captures the essence of adolescence: a phase where the promise of a brighter future can feel distant and abstract, while the immediate struggles are palpable and overwhelming. During my teenage years, I often grappled with the same fears and doubts encapsulated in Rodrigo's lyric. The societal expectation to "grow out" of certain behaviors and feelings, coupled with the pressure to succeed academically, socially, and personally, often felt like a heavy burden. The repeated assurance from well-meaning adults that everything would eventually get better sometimes felt hollow, especially when faced with the day-to-day realities of teenage life—peer pressure, academic stress, and the quest for self-identity. This lyric also highlights a critical aspect of the teenage experience: the feeling of being misunderstood. Adults often offer platitudes based on their own experiences, but these reassurances can sometimes feel disconnected from the current realities faced by teens. The fear that one might not "get better" or that their struggles might not be temporary can be isolating. This lyric effectively captures that isolation and the unique pressure of feeling like you must live up to an idealized vision of teenage life—what Rodrigo refers to as the "teenage dream." Moreover, the line underscores a universal aspect of growing up: the fear of failure. As teenagers, we are constantly told that we are on a journey of self-improvement and growth. However, this journey is fraught with setbacks and moments of self-doubt. The fear that one might not overcome these hurdles is a common, yet often unspoken, concern. Rodrigo's lyric gives voice to this fear, validating the experience of many teens who feel they are falling short of expectations. In my own life, this fear manifested in various ways—doubts about my abilities, anxiety about the future, and the constant pressure to conform to societal standards. The lyric "but what if I don't?" resonates as it encapsulates the anxiety that perhaps, despite best efforts, one might not achieve the promised betterment. Olivia Rodrigo's "teenage dream" lyric eloquently expresses the complexities of adolescence, encapsulating the hopeful yet uncertain nature of growing up. It serves as a reminder that it's okay to question and feel unsure, as these feelings are an integral part of the journey towards adulthood. By voicing these doubts, Rodrigo not only normalizes the struggles of adolescence but also offers a sense of solidarity to those navigating this tumultuous phase.

Hello, I am Laren Hoskins, a current senior at Urbana High School. I am looking forward to continuing my education at Liberty University in the Fall of 2024. I have applied for many scholarships but many have declined with the statement that I am not in as great of financial need as the winners. It's frustrating how the current financial aid system often overlooks the struggles of the middle class. While scholarships and grants provide support for lower-income families, and the upper class usually has the financial means to afford college, many middle-class families like mine are left feeling stuck. The FAFSA mainly offers financial aid to lower-income families but rarely provides any aid for middle-income families. With the high cost of college, I am relying on scholarships to ease the financial burden on my family. I have worked for the majority of high school to save up for these expenses. I plan on working throughout college to make ends meet, but, unfortunately, my family is facing such a heavy financial strain, especially with multiple siblings also pursuing a college education. It's a tough situation, but my determination and hard work will hopefully help me overcome these financial challenges and receive scholarships to help achieve my academic goals. I have not received a scholarship yet and hope to receive this one. This scholarship will help me pursue my marketing degree at Liberty University. I need this scholarship because I am the main provider of my financial college fund. I have taken many gen-ed classes in high school to help cut the costs of college. After I graduate with my bachelor's degree in marketing, I want to attend Law School and obtain my law degree in family law. This scholarship will lessen the financial burden as I graduate from undergrad and move on to graduate school.

Growing up, I faced numerous challenges that could have hindered my path to higher education. Raised in a middle-income household, financial constraints often cast a shadow over my aspirations for higher education. I have worked throughout high school to be able to afford a car and necessities. Additionally, navigating personal struggles and familial responsibilities added layers of complexity to my journey. I have struggled with anxiety and depression because of many different circumstances. Mental health plays a crucial role in achieving academic and personal success. By prioritizing self-care and seeking support when needed, I can effectively navigate challenges, cultivate resilience, and maintain overall well-being. Integrating mental health awareness and support into educational and professional settings fosters a healthier, more supportive environment for all. My senior year of high school has been filled with many mental challenges. However, rather than succumbing to these obstacles, I chose to confront them head-on, fueled by a relentless determination to pursue my academic goals. Despite the adversities I encountered, I refused to let circumstances define my future. Instead, I turned to education as a beacon of hope and opportunity. Through hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of mentors and loved ones, I overcame these challenges and emerged stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever to seize the opportunities afforded by higher education. Whether volunteering at local shelters, organizing charity events, or tutoring fellow students, I have always sought to use my time and talents to uplift those in need and contribute to the well-being of my community. I volunteer at my local Sycamore House where I helped run events and babysit children. Sycamore House is focused on helping single mothers adapt to parenting and living. Academically, I have consistently maintained high grades and pursued rigorous coursework, challenging myself to excel in every endeavor. I take many college classes through Clark State Community College and The University of Findlay. I have taken many AP classes as well and have gotten a three or four on all my AP tests. Additionally, I seek to develop strong critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that will be essential in my future legal career. Upon graduation from law school, my goal is to establish my own law firm, specializing in areas such as civil rights, family law, employment law, or business law. I aspire to create a firm that prioritizes integrity, empathy, and client satisfaction, providing high-quality legal representation and advocacy to individuals and businesses in need. To accomplish these changes, I am willing to dedicate myself to rigorous academic studies, internships, and professional development opportunities that will prepare me for success in both marketing and law. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Staring at the wall, gasping for air, I wait till my lungs comfortably fill with air. My mind races from thought to thought of bad possibilities that are bound to happen one night. This has become a common occurrence for me. I did not know what was happening but it made me dread going to bed. My mind could not be controlled. Thoughts of someone breaking into my house or killing someone close to me constantly filled my mind. The thought of death haunted me to the point of ruining my mental health. My body would shut down and forget how to breathe. My lungs never felt like they had enough air to keep me alive. I would lose hours of sleep just spent worrying about the impossible happening. I would sit up in bed to try to regain my air and constant breath. I eventually got so fed up that I went to go talk to my parents about it. It all started after someone I knew died recently with no indicators that they were in bad health. Then soon after my grandma died, leaving me with confusion and grief. I talked briefly about my panic attacks with my church friends but they just brushed it off saying that I just needed to pray about it. I had no one to turn to and felt trapped in my thoughts. I was praying every night and hoping that each night I would be able to sleep. The older I got the more I understood what was happening to me. I had anxiety that paralyzed me in fear and caused panic attacks. I tried to hide my thoughts from everyone but I would worry even when I was around my friends. Not only did this affect me at my house but it also affected me when I would go to sleepovers or even on vacation. No matter the circumstances my anxiety would consume my thoughts. I started to talk to my counselor about this and read about anxiety in the Bible. I put more of my trust in God and relied on him to give me peace. Eventually, I started to gain control over my anxiety and was able to sleep. Sleep became my coping mechanism when I needed to get my mind off of things that were stressing me out. Instead of worrying about death, I learned that when I die I will go to heaven and that helped calm my fear. My fear transformed from fear of the impossible to stress about daily life. Although stress still consumes my mind I solved my mental problem of anxiety attacks by trusting in the Lord and finding ways to cope with my anxiety.
Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship
Throughout high school, I have noticed a change in my personality and others around me. I have observed that the more confident you are, the more people will respect you. This realization has been instrumental in shaping my growth as a leader and a person over the past few years. My journey as a leader is represented by my participation in various school and community events and organizations, particularly my role in the National Honor Society (NHS). Joining NHS my junior year and being elected president for my senior year marked a significant turning point in my leadership development. Leading NHS has provided me with numerous opportunities to exercise kindness in problem-solving. For instance, when organizing a pet drive to raise awareness and supplies for local animal shelters, I drew up innovative solutions, such as crafting homemade dog toys from donated t-shirts. I also encouraged students to help and get involved with the making of these dog toys. This approach addressed the immediate need for supplies and memorably engaged fellow students. Although the pet drive ran smoothly, there were many bumps along the way. Many vendors and shelters did not maintain contact with the committee. This led to us calling day after day and trying to contact them in person. I had to show love and patience when vendors were making communication difficult. After reaching enough shelters, our pet drive was a success. Moreover, I helped organize Dinner with Santa at the Elementary School. This committee helped plan activities to help the program run smoothly and entertain the children. Many of our helpers were reluctant to help the whole night which led me to show love to them and try to move them to different stations to help engage them better. In my role as NHS president, I consistently sought a way to help out, whether that was in concession shifts or cleaning up at the end of events. By being willing to lend a hand wherever needed, I fostered a sense of trust and unity within the team, enabling us to achieve success through collective action. Through acts of kindness, collaboration, and a commitment to making a positive impact, I've been able to contribute to my community and inspire others to do the same. As I continue on my journey, I remain dedicated to serving others and fostering a culture of love and kindness in all that I do.

As an American, I find immense pride in the foundational principles that shape the fabric of our nation. In my view, what truly makes me proud to be an American is the rich tapestry of freedoms and opportunities that this country offers. From the moment our founding fathers laid the groundwork for democracy to the present day, the ideals of liberty, democracy, and equality have served as guiding beacons for generations of Americans. At the core of my pride lies a deep appreciation for the fundamental principles upon which the United States was built. The concept of democracy, where every voice is heard and every vote counts, is a cornerstone of American identity. The right to express myself freely, pursue my passions, and contribute to society without fear of persecution is a privilege that fills me with gratitude and pride. It's this freedom that enables individuals to dream big, challenge the status quo, and strive for a better future. Moreover, I take pride in the diversity and resilience of the American people. America is a melting pot of cultures, religions, and backgrounds, where people from all walks of life come together in pursuit of common goals. Despite our differences, we are united by a shared commitment to progress and prosperity. The spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship, and perseverance is deeply ingrained in the American psyche, driving us to overcome obstacles and push the boundaries of what is possible. However, as proud as I am of our nation's accomplishments, I recognize that there are areas where we fall short of our ideals. In recent years, the United States has become increasingly polarized, with divisions along political, racial, and socioeconomic lines. This polarization has led to a breakdown in civil discourse, eroded trust in institutions, and hindered progress on critical issues. One significant change that many aspire to see is greater unity and understanding among Americans. To effect change in this area, individuals can engage in efforts to promote dialogue, empathy, and reconciliation across divides. This might involve reaching out to people with different perspectives, actively listening to their experiences and concerns, and finding common ground on which to build understanding and cooperation. Community-building initiatives, educational programs, and grassroots activism can also play a role in fostering unity and bridging divides within American society. In conclusion, my pride in being American stems from the values of democracy, liberty, and equality that form the bedrock of our nation. While there are challenges that we must address, I am optimistic about the future of our country. By embracing our diversity, fostering unity, and upholding the principles that define us, we can continue to strive towards a more perfect union.
