RELEVANCE Scholarship
My decision to pursue a career in medicine is inseparable from the challenges that have shaped me. I did not choose nursing because it was convenient or expected; I chose it because I have lived on both sides of the hospital bed. I know what it means to fight for your life, to navigate fear, to depend on strangers for comfort, and to redefine yourself after loss. Those experiences did more than influence my path—they gave me a sense of purpose rooted in empathy, resilience, and a desire to help others feel less alone during their hardest moments.
Surviving cancer and undergoing an amputation changed the entire trajectory of my life. Before those experiences, I understood nursing from the outside: the science, the skill, the compassion. Afterward, I understood nursing from the inside—from the patient’s perspective. I learned how it feels when a clinician enters the room and treats you like a diagnosis instead of a person. I also learned how powerful it is when a nurse sits down, looks you in the eyes, and speaks to you with dignity at a time when you feel fragile. Those moments of genuine care influenced me long before I returned to school, but they became the foundation of why I knew nursing was where I belonged.
Recovery brought challenges that forced me to grow in ways I never anticipated. I had to relearn mobility, rebuild my confidence, and navigate the emotional weight of losing a part of myself. Some days the physical pain was overwhelming; other days, the emotional toll felt heavier. Yet every challenge reminded me that I was still capable of moving forward. That resilience became one of the most important qualities I now bring into my work. As a nurse in a level 1 trauma hospital, I care for patients whose lives change in moments. I understand their fear because I have felt it. I understand their frustration, grief, and hope because I have lived it. Those experiences allow me to connect with patients on a deeper level, offering not just clinical care but comfort grounded in lived understanding.
My personal challenges also shaped how I approach teamwork and advocacy in healthcare. When you spend months as a patient, you learn quickly how essential communication, collaboration, and compassion are. I saw how small oversights in care can have big emotional impacts and how even the busiest units run smoother when team members trust and support one another. These lessons influence how I practice today. I help coworkers no matter their role, I speak up for patients who cannot advocate for themselves, and I approach every shift with the mindset that kindness is a form of clinical excellence.
Returning to school required courage, but it also felt like a responsibility—to myself, to my family, and to the patients who inspired me. I want my children to see that the hardest chapters of life do not have to define your limits. My husband’s support during my recovery and through my return to school strengthened my determination to finish what I started. Now, as I pursue my BSN, I am motivated by the belief that my experiences position me to make a meaningful impact on patient care.
Challenges did not deter me from medicine; they revealed that this is where I am meant to be. They taught me empathy that cannot be learned from textbooks, resilience that cannot be forced, and compassion that shapes every interaction I have with patients. I hope to use my experiences to bring comfort, hope, and dignity to others—because I know firsthand how deeply those moments matter.
Susie Green Scholarship for Women Pursuing Education
The courage to go back to school did not arrive in a single moment. It was built slowly, through experiences that tested my strength, reshaped my identity, and reminded me of the purpose I wanted to reclaim. As a cancer survivor and an amputee, I have lived through adversity that forced me to redefine what matters most. For a long time, survival itself was my focus. I measured progress in small victories—managing pain, relearning movement, rebuilding my sense of self. Yet somewhere in the middle of those challenges, I found a deeper determination not just to survive, but to rebuild a life that reflected the person I fought so hard to remain. That realization gave me the courage to return to school and continue my path toward becoming the nurse I always knew I could be.
Working full time in a level 1 trauma hospital showed me exactly why I needed to return to my education. Every day, I care for patients facing the worst moments of their lives. They look to me for reassurance, guidance, and compassion that goes beyond the technical tasks of nursing. I realized that advancing my education was not only a personal goal, but a way to better serve the people who depend on me. My experience as a patient—vulnerable, afraid, and fighting for my life—allows me to see my patients through a different lens. I know the power of a nurse who sits beside you, even briefly, and makes you feel seen. I wanted to grow into a nurse who combined skill, knowledge, and lived empathy to make a meaningful difference. Returning to school became a promise I made to my patients as much as to myself.
The courage to return also came from my family. My husband, a stay-at-home father, shoulders the responsibility of managing our home and ensuring I can make it to and from long shifts. He has supported every step of my healing and every step toward my goals. My children are another source of strength; I want them to see that no matter what life takes from you, determination can rebuild anything. I want them to grow up knowing their mother did not allow hardship to define the limits of her future. Instead, she used it to fuel her drive.
Financial uncertainty was one of the biggest barriers that made returning to school feel daunting. Working full time while managing recovery, family life, and unpredictable expenses is challenging. But even then, the desire to finish my degree—and show my family the power of perseverance—outweighed my fear. I knew I had an income, and I was willing to contribute what I could, even if it meant my payments might vary. What mattered most was committing to the journey and trusting that if I continued to show up, work hard, and advocate for myself, the rest would fall into place.
Ultimately, the courage to go back to school came from understanding that my hardships were not obstacles meant to stop me; they were experiences meant to strengthen me. Cancer taught me how precious time is. Amputation taught me how adaptable and resilient the human body—and spirit—can be. Nursing taught me that my challenges give me a unique ability to care for others with depth and authenticity. And my family taught me that courage often grows from the love and belief of the people who stand beside us.
Returning to school is not just a goal—it is my way of honoring everything I have survived, everything I hope to give, and everything I believe my future can become.
Second Chance Scholarship
I want to make a change in my life because I believe in the power of transformation, both personal and professional. For the past few years, I’ve faced numerous challenges — from surviving cancer to enduring the physical and emotional toll of amputation — and these experiences have driven me to pursue a future in healthcare with a greater sense of purpose and empathy. My goal is to use my story and my skills as a nurse to create a more inclusive, compassionate healthcare environment that not only treats patients but truly sees them — in their entirety — as people with unique needs, experiences, and aspirations.
This change is not just about my career; it’s about my personal growth as well. I’ve realized that the struggles I’ve faced have given me a deep sense of empathy and resilience, both of which are essential qualities for any healthcare professional. I want to channel these qualities into improving the patient experience, particularly for those facing life-altering conditions like mine. I want to help patients not just survive, but thrive — to ensure they feel heard, supported, and empowered in their recovery. The decision to pursue my BSN is a direct result of these desires. It’s a step I’ve taken to build the foundation of knowledge and skills that will allow me to have a greater impact on those I serve.
So far, I’ve already taken several concrete steps to bring myself closer to this goal. I’m currently working full time at a Level 1 trauma hospital, where I gain hands-on experience and continue to develop my clinical skills. My role as a nurse allows me to see firsthand the challenges that patients face and how much of a difference empathy and clear communication can make. I’ve also dedicated time to studying for my BSN, understanding that this will not only advance my career but also deepen my capacity to understand the complexities of patient care. Through these efforts, I’m learning the importance of not just providing care, but making sure patients feel seen, heard, and supported throughout their healthcare journey.
This scholarship will significantly impact my ability to continue pursuing my goals. Financially, it will help ease the burden of tuition and allow me to focus more on my studies and less on how to manage the costs of continuing my education. This support will give me the space to develop into the kind of nurse I aspire to be, one who advocates for her patients, creates meaningful connections, and drives change in the healthcare system. The scholarship will allow me to move closer to my goal of transforming my personal challenges into strengths that can improve the lives of others.
Paying it forward is incredibly important to me. I’ve always believed that when you receive help, it’s your responsibility to pass that help along to others. After completing my education and achieving my goal of becoming a nurse, I plan to mentor others, particularly those who have faced their own personal challenges, as I have. Whether through offering guidance to aspiring nurses who may feel like they don’t belong or supporting patients facing difficult diagnoses, I want to ensure that others feel seen and heard. Additionally, I plan to donate my time to healthcare outreach programs that support underserved communities, particularly those who face barriers to receiving the care they need. In doing so, I hope to inspire others to give back, just as I have been given opportunities along my journey.
This scholarship will will enable me to change the lives of others in meaningful, lasting ways.
Harvest Scholarship for Women Dreamers
My "Pie in the Sky" dream is to blend my passions for healthcare, education, and creative storytelling into something that has a lasting impact on both individuals and communities. I envision creating an innovative healthcare platform that not only provides critical health education and resources but also fosters a creative, supportive environment for people to share their experiences, connect, and learn from one another. This platform would be designed to serve as a community where people could learn about managing chronic conditions, mental health, or post-trauma recovery, while also sharing their stories in ways that empower and inspire others. It would merge traditional healthcare education with interactive storytelling, offering a space for narratives, resources, and support systems to intersect in a way that truly benefits users.
This dream is deeply personal because of my own journey. As a cancer survivor who has faced significant challenges in both health and life, I have experienced firsthand the power of support, understanding, and shared experience. The emotional and psychological toll of battling a life-threatening illness was often compounded by a lack of personalized, relatable education. I struggled to find a platform that combined the hard facts of recovery with the emotional support and community I so desperately needed. That gap became clear to me as I navigated my own healing process, and it sparked the vision for what I now see as my "Pie in the Sky" dream.
While the dream is ambitious, I know that it’s attainable with time, patience, and careful planning. The first step is to continue my work in healthcare, where I can deepen my understanding of the medical system and patient needs. I’m currently pursuing my BSN and working at a Level 1 trauma hospital, which gives me the clinical experience and real-world exposure I need. Alongside this, I’m committed to gaining the skills necessary for building the platform — from understanding digital design and user experience to learning about content creation and digital marketing.
The next step will involve networking and finding like-minded professionals who share my passion for healthcare innovation and storytelling. These connections will be invaluable for building a team of individuals who can contribute their expertise to the platform. I also plan to further my education by pursuing certifications or advanced degrees related to healthcare technology or digital communications. Through these steps, I’ll be able to equip myself with the knowledge and tools necessary to turn this dream into a reality.
There will be challenges along the way, both personally and professionally. There will be times when I question my ability to juggle the demands of my career, my family, and my dreams. But it’s in those moments of doubt that I remind myself of my resilience. As a cancer survivor and a nurse, I’ve faced some of the toughest moments life can throw at you, and I’ve come out stronger on the other side. This "Pie in the Sky" dream is not just about creating a platform, but about creating a life that continues to evolve, inspire, and support others along their own journeys.
It will take courage, creativity, and commitment to growth to reach this dream, but I’m confident that with each step, I will be closer to building something that not only changes my life but touches the lives of others in meaningful ways.
Audra Dominguez "Be Brave" Scholarship
Adversity is an inevitable part of life, and it’s how we respond to it that shapes our journey. In my pursuit of a nursing career, I have faced both physical and mental challenges that tested my resilience. One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was being diagnosed with cancer. This diagnosis and the subsequent treatments not only affected my physical health but also created mental and emotional obstacles. However, instead of letting these challenges derail my aspirations, I found ways to keep moving forward and stay focused on my goals.
When I was diagnosed, the physical toll of surgeries, chemotherapy, and recovery took a heavy toll on me. There were days when I felt weak and overwhelmed, unsure of how I could continue to pursue my academic and career goals. However, during those dark moments, I reminded myself of why I chose nursing in the first place: my desire to help others and make a meaningful difference. I knew that my own experiences as a patient would shape me into a more empathetic and compassionate nurse, and this kept me motivated to push through.
To continue my journey, I took a series of proactive steps. I broke my goals into smaller, manageable tasks and focused on what I could do each day rather than being overwhelmed by the larger picture. I also reached out to my professors and mentors for support, explaining my situation and asking for accommodations when needed. Their encouragement helped me maintain my academic progress, even during times when my health was unpredictable.
Prioritizing my physical and mental well-being was crucial during this time. I understood that I needed to care for my body and mind in order to keep pushing forward. I made time for rest, sought counseling when necessary, and maintained a positive outlook on my recovery. By focusing on self-care, I was able to stay grounded and resilient in the face of adversity. I also learned to be flexible and patient with myself, understanding that while my timeline might have changed, my progress was still meaningful.
My journey through cancer treatment also reinforced my desire to become a nurse who brings empathy and understanding to every patient interaction. I realized how important it was for healthcare professionals to offer not just medical treatment but also emotional support, something I experienced firsthand. These lessons have only strengthened my commitment to my career goals, and I am more determined than ever to work in healthcare and give back to others.
Despite the obstacles, I maintained my focus on the long-term vision of becoming a nurse. Every step, no matter how small, was a step closer to my goal. I found strength in the support of family, friends, and mentors who believed in me. Their encouragement, combined with my own drive and determination, helped me continue my education, even when it felt overwhelming.
In conclusion, overcoming adversity is never easy, but it has shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate individual. My journey through cancer has only fueled my desire to make a difference in healthcare, and the lessons I’ve learned from these challenges will guide me throughout my career. I am more committed than ever to pursuing my dream of becoming a nurse, and I know that the resilience I developed during my battle with cancer will help me continue to achieve my aspirations, no matter what challenges come my way.

Faith, Service, and Family: The Values That Shape My Life
My life has been shaped by three core values: faith, service to others, and a deep appreciation for family. These principles have not only influenced my personal journey but have also guided the decisions I make and the way I interact with those around me. As I reflect on these themes, I see how they intersect and shape who I am, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share these values with others.
Faith in Action: Guided Through Adversity
Faith has been the cornerstone of my life, providing both strength and direction in times of uncertainty. Growing up, I was taught to trust in God's plan and to have faith in the face of challenges. A significant turning point in my life occurred when I faced my own personal health crisis. During my battle with cancer, I leaned heavily on my faith to guide me through the physically and emotionally challenging moments. There were times when fear and doubt crept in, but it was my belief in God's presence and love that kept me grounded.
One particular moment that stands out was when I was preparing for a major surgery. As I lay in the hospital bed, I felt overwhelmed by the unknowns. I remembered the teachings of my faith—about surrendering control and trusting that whatever happened, I would not be alone. I prayed for strength and peace, and in that moment, I felt a profound sense of calm. That peace carried me through the surgery and the long recovery that followed. My faith was a constant source of comfort, reminding me that I was never truly alone, and that everything would unfold as it was meant to.
Servicing Others: The Call to Make a Difference
In addition to my personal faith journey, service to others has been an integral part of my life. Growing up, my family instilled in me the belief that it is our duty to give back to the community and help those in need. I have always sought opportunities to volunteer and make a positive impact in the lives of others, whether it was through local community organizations, my church, or participating in charity events.
One of the most rewarding experiences of service I had was volunteering at a local homeless shelter. My role involved preparing and serving meals, but it was the conversations with the guests that left a lasting impact on me. Many of them had faced significant hardships, and I listened to their stories with compassion and understanding. It was in those moments that I learned how much of an impact simple acts of kindness can have on someone who feels overlooked or forgotten. I learned that service is not always about grand gestures, but often about showing up with a listening ear, a kind word, or even just a smile.
Valuing Family: A Source of Strength and Love
Family has always been the bedrock of my life, and I consider both my biological and chosen family to be a source of strength, love, and guidance. Growing up, my family was my safe space—where values like love, respect, and loyalty were taught and upheld. These lessons have shaped who I am today and continue to guide my decisions.
One of the most important lessons my family has taught me is the significance of honoring and caring for one another. When my mother became ill, I took on a caregiver role to support her during her recovery. This experience taught me the importance of being there for my loved ones, even when the journey is difficult. Caring for her not only deepened my appreciation for family but also reinforced the value of service, compassion, and patience.
Conclusion: Living Out the Values of Faith, Service, and Family
The values of faith, service, and family have been essential in shaping who I am today. They have guided me through challenging times, inspired me to help others, and reinforced the importance of love and connection in my life. As I look ahead to the future, I am committed to continuing to live out these values, knowing that they will guide me toward becoming the person I aspire to be. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to further my education and continue to serve others, carrying forward the legacy of faith, service, and family in all that I do.
Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship
From an early age, I was inspired by healthcare professionals who not only heal but also provide comfort during vulnerable moments. My passion for nursing grew deeper after my own battle with cancer. As a patient, I experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating the healthcare system and saw the immense value of compassionate care. This journey solidified my decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). My personal experience has motivated me to become a nurse who not only provides medical care but also offers emotional support to those facing serious illnesses.
During my cancer treatments, I had the privilege of being cared for by nurses who made a lasting impression on me. They didn’t just administer medications and treatments—they listened, provided reassurance, and created a supportive environment that helped me manage the emotional toll of my illness. These nurses showed me the importance of holistic care—treating the body, mind, and spirit. Their ability to build trust and comfort in the most difficult times inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. I want to offer that same level of care to others who are navigating their own healthcare challenges.
I am pursuing my BSN to expand my clinical skills and enhance my ability to provide comprehensive, compassionate care. I am particularly passionate about oncology nursing. My experiences with cancer care have deepened my desire to work with cancer patients, providing not only medical treatment but also the emotional support that is crucial to their healing process. I want to be the nurse who educates patients about their treatment options, listens to their concerns, and offers comfort during their journey.
In addition to providing direct patient care, my main goals in pursuing a BSN is to advocate for improved access to healthcare. My experience as a cancer patient highlighted the disparities that exist in the healthcare system, particularly for underserved populations. Many people in rural and low-income communities face significant barriers to accessing care, and I want to be part of the solution. By earning my BSN, I will be better equipped to address these gaps in care and advocate for policies that promote healthcare equity. I am committed to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to the care they need.
Another key goal I have is to mentor and inspire future generations of nurses. Throughout my treatment, I was supported by a team of compassionate, skilled nurses, and I want to give back by helping to shape the next generation of healthcare professionals. As I progress through my BSN program, I plan to engage in clinical teaching and preceptorship. I hope to pass on the knowledge and skills I acquire while also fostering the same sense of compassion and empathy that I experienced as a patient.
Receiving this scholarship would provide much-needed financial relief, allowing me to focus on my studies and continue working toward my goal of becoming a registered nurse with a BSN. This opportunity would be a significant step in helping me achieve my dream of providing high-quality care to patients, advocating for healthcare equity, and mentoring future nurses.
In conclusion, my cancer journey has not only inspired my passion for nursing but has also shaped my desire to make a lasting impact in the field. Earning my BSN will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate care, advocate for better access to healthcare, and contribute to the nursing profession. This scholarship will help me continue on my path to achieving these goals and making a difference in the lives of those I care for.

MJ Strength in Care Scholarship
n 2013, I became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), a decision inspired by my natural inclination to care for others and the influence of my mother, who worked as a home healthcare aide. Growing up, I was always the person people turned to when they needed help. Whether it was assisting a neighbor or comforting a family member, I found purpose in being there for others. My mother’s work showed me how deeply a compassionate caregiver could impact lives. Her dedication to her patients taught me that nursing isn’t just about administering care—it’s about offering emotional support, listening, and building trust. It was this understanding that inspired me to pursue a career in nursing.
As an LPN, I have always felt privileged to be a part of my patients’ healing journeys. I’ve worked in various healthcare settings, from hospitals to long-term care facilities, and have learned that patient care goes beyond medical procedures. It’s about treating the whole person, not just their diagnosis. Throughout my career, I’ve built strong relationships with my patients, offering not only medical care but also comfort and empathy during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Whether it’s a simple conversation or a reassuring touch, I know that the little things can make a huge difference.
However, my path in nursing took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis and subsequent loss of my right leg above the knee were life-altering events. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a caregiver—I became a patient. My world was turned upside down, and I found myself on the receiving end of care. This experience was humbling and eye-opening. As I navigated my own treatment and recovery, I gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be vulnerable, to trust others with your health, and to rely on people for support.
While the experience was incredibly difficult, it also made me a better nurse. I now have firsthand knowledge of what it feels like to be on the other side of the bed, and this has strengthened my compassion. I have learned to appreciate the emotional and psychological aspects of patient care even more. Being a patient myself reinforced the importance of not only providing physical care but also offering kindness, encouragement, and hope to those who are suffering.
Throughout this journey, my family has been my greatest source of strength. As a wife and mother, my commitment to them has been a driving force in my recovery. My husband and children have been by my side every step of the way, offering their love and support when I needed it most. They remind me daily that, even in the face of adversity, love and resilience can overcome any obstacle. It’s because of them that I continue to find purpose in both my personal life and my nursing career.
Outside of my work, I have a deep passion for nature, which brings me balance and peace. Whether I’m taking walks with my family, spending time in the garden, or simply sitting outside to enjoy the fresh air, nature helps me recharge and find a sense of calm. It’s during these moments of quiet reflection that I’m able to process my experiences and regain the strength I need to move forward.
Additionally, adaptive fitness has become an important part of my life since my amputation. Through physical rehabilitation, I’ve learned to embrace my body’s new challenges, set personal goals, and push beyond them. This journey has not only helped me regain physical strength but also given me a renewed sense of empowerment. I’m passionate about sharing this journey with others, especially those facing similar challenges, and helping them see that even in difficult circumstances, there is still strength within us.
In summary, my journey as a nurse has been shaped by my natural desire to care for others, the guidance of role models like my mother, and the life-changing experience of becoming a patient myself. Through my cancer diagnosis, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the importance of empathy, compassion, and support in caregiving. My family has been my anchor, and nature and fitness help me maintain balance and find joy outside of work. I am committed to continuing my work as a nurse, knowing that my experiences—both as a caregiver and as a patient—have only strengthened my ability to serve others.

In life, unexpected challenges often lead to profound transformations, shaping our identities and aspirations. My journey began with a shocking diagnosis of sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that altered the course of my life in unimaginable ways. Shortly after my diagnosis, I learned about my condition: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a genetic disorder that often comes with its own set of trials. Navigating these health struggles has equipped me with resilience, grit, and a renewed sense of purpose—qualities that inspire my pursuit of higher education.
The physical toll of my conditions has been significant. The battle against sarcoma was fierce, culminating in a devastating miscarriage that tore through my emotional fabric. This loss weighed heavily on my heart, but it also ignited a fire within me. I understood that life is fragile and unpredictable; therefore, I resolved to make every moment count. Shortly thereafter, I faced yet another hurdle—an amputation of my right leg above the knee. This life-changing event could have easily discouraged me, but instead, it reinforced my determination to pursue my dreams. I had to learn how to walk again, both literally and metaphorically, and each step became a testament to my strength and perseverance.
As a result of these experiences, I’ve become passionate about advocating for others with NF1 and other disabilities. I believe that education is the gateway to empowerment, and I want to equip myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to help improve the lives of those affected by similar conditions. My desire to pursue higher education stems not just from personal ambition but also from the aspiration to contribute meaningfully to a community that often feels marginalized and misunderstood.
Despite the physical and emotional challenges I face, I have developed a strong academic foundation. I have engaged in various learning opportunities, including workshops about NF awareness and disability rights. These experiences have broadened my understanding of the world and reinforced my commitment to making it a better place. They also illuminated the connection between my personal narrative and my educational goals. I am eager to study fields such as social work or public health, where I can merge my lived experiences with my professional ambitions to advocate for patients’ rights and policy reforms.
Moreover, I recognize the importance of support systems. My family, friends, and healthcare providers have played instrumental roles in my journey, providing encouragement and guidance when I needed it most. As I embark on this new chapter of my life, I carry their lessons with me. I understand the value of collaboration and hope to foster an inclusive environment in my future academic endeavors—one where all voices, including those of individuals with disabilities, are heard and valued.
In conclusion, my journey through the challenges of sarcoma and NF1 has shaped me into a resilient, compassionate individual motivated by a desire for knowledge and advocacy. I know that pursuing higher education will not only empower me but also allow me to impact others positively. It is with this conviction that I apply for this scholarship, confident that my story, fortitude, and commitment make me a worthy candidate. As I continue to navigate life with its uncertainties, I do so with the belief that a brighter future awaits, both for me and for those I aim to serve.

Giving back to the community and planning for a positive future impact are vital components of a fulfilling life. Currently, I engage in various activities designed to support my local community, while also nurturing aspirations that align with broader global issues. These efforts not only enrich the lives of those around me but also provide a framework for my future endeavors aimed at creating lasting change.
At present, my primary mode of giving back takes the form of volunteer work. I actively participate in local food drives and community clean-up initiatives, recognizing that these small actions can collectively lead to significant improvements in our neighborhood. Through the food drives, I help collect and distribute meals to families facing food insecurity, which has opened my eyes to the ongoing struggle many endure on a daily basis. Experiencing this firsthand motivates me to continue these efforts and inspire others to take part in similar initiatives.
In addition, I have taken on mentorship roles with youth organizations, where I share my time and knowledge with young people in need of guidance. This experience is particularly fulfilling because it allows me to contribute to their personal development while bridging the generational gap. I encourage them to pursue their education passionately and explore their interests, knowing that fostering a sense of potential in young people can lead to ripple effects within the community.
Looking ahead, my vision for positively impacting the world focuses on education and sustainability. I believe education is one of the most powerful tools for social change. Therefore, I plan to support educational programs in underfunded areas, aiming to provide resources such as tutoring services, after-school programs, and access to technology. By working with local schools and nonprofits, I hope to help eliminate barriers that prevent students from achieving their full potential. Education empowers individuals and communities, and by investing in the next generation, I believe we can create a more equitable society.
Additionally, sustainability is integral to my future plans. As environmental challenges become increasingly pronounced, I am determined to advocate for sustainable practices within my community and beyond. I envision organizing workshops that educate people about reducing waste, utilizing renewable energy sources, and practicing responsible consumption. Encouraging local businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices is another critical component of my strategy; by collaborating with entrepreneurs, we can create a culture of sustainability that supports economic growth while preserving our planet for future generations.
Ultimately, my journey of giving back is rooted in a commitment to build a better world for everyone. While my current contributions focus on local community service and mentoring, I am inspired by a vision of expanding these efforts into wider educational and environmental initiatives. Each small act of kindness and support lays the groundwork for a larger movement towards positive change. I remain optimistic about the potential impact we can achieve collectively and look forward to the collaborative efforts required to tackle pressing issues effectively. Through perseverance and commitment to these goals, I hope to play a role in shaping a brighter future filled with opportunity and respect for all.

Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
Pursuing a degree in nursing has become a significant aspiration for me, motivated by a combination of personal experiences and a deep-seated desire to contribute meaningfully to my community. The role of a nurse is not only vital in the healthcare system but also deeply rewarding, as it combines compassion, science, and the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives.
My interest in nursing began during my high school years when I volunteered at a local hospital. There, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact nurses have on patients and their families. One particular instance that stands out was when I was assisting in a rehabilitation unit. I observed how a nurse closely monitored a patient recovering from surgery, providing not only medical care but also emotional support. This blend of scientific knowledge and empathetic interaction made me realize the unique position nurses occupy within the healthcare framework. They advocate for patients’ needs while ensuring they receive the best possible medical care. It was in these moments that I recognized my calling; I wanted to be part of this compassionate profession where I could contribute positively to individuals during vulnerable times in their lives.
Moreover, my personal experiences with family members who have faced health challenges further cemented my desire to pursue nursing. Watching nurses work tirelessly to provide care and comfort during my loved ones’ illnesses inspired me to want to emulate their dedication. I remember feeling grateful for the night shift nurse who took the time to explain procedures to my grandmother, alleviating her anxiety. Such interactions illustrate the importance of communication and understanding in nursing. I aspire to carry forward this nurturing spirit, ensuring that I communicate effectively and compassionately with my patients throughout my nursing career.
As I embark on this educational journey, I also reflect on how I can contribute to my community as a nurse. Health disparities are prevalent in many communities, often resulting from socioeconomic factors, lack of access to healthcare, or cultural barriers. I hope to leverage my nursing education to advocate for underserved populations. By becoming an accessible source of information and care, I aim to bridge the gaps in healthcare access. With a focus on preventative health and education, I envision organizing health fairs and workshops within my community to promote awareness about prevalent health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and mental health.
In addition to direct patient care, I hope to engage in outreach programs that focus on educating families about healthcare resources. Many individuals are unaware of available services that can assist them during challenging times. By collaborating with local organizations, I believe I can help create programs that facilitate easier access to care and empower individuals to take charge of their health.
Furthermore, I am interested in pursuing specializations within nursing that align with my passions, such as pediatric or geriatric nursing. Working with children or the elderly allows a unique connection to be formed, where I can make a substantial impact during significant life stages.
In conclusion, my desire to pursue a degree in nursing is driven by a passion for service, compassion for others, and a commitment to improving healthcare access within my community. As I work towards becoming a nurse, I look forward to contributing to the well-being of individuals and families, fostering health education, and making a lasting difference. My journey in nursing will be guided by the principles of empathy, advocacy, and a determination to serve those around me, ensuring that I leave a positive mark on the lives I touch.

My vision for myself as a nurse in the future is deeply rooted in the values of compassion, resilience, and advocacy, shaped by both personal experience and a profound commitment to improving the lives of others. As a future nurse, I see myself not only as a provider of medical care but as a holistic caregiver who addresses the physical, emotional, and social needs of patients. I envision a nursing career where I am an empathetic listener, a skilled practitioner, and a proactive advocate for health equity and inclusivity. This vision is inspired by my journey as an above-the-knee amputee due to cancer, an experience that has given me unique insights into the challenges patients face and the transformative power of compassionate care.
At the core of my vision is the goal to deliver patient-centered care that honors each individual’s dignity, culture, and personal story. I aspire to create a safe and supportive environment where patients feel genuinely seen and heard. Nursing, to me, is more than administering treatments or monitoring vital signs; it is about building trust and partnership with patients and their families. I want to be the nurse who takes the time to understand each patient’s fears, hopes, and goals, recognizing that healing involves the whole person, not just their illness. By fostering open communication and empathy, I aim to empower patients to actively participate in their care and make informed decisions about their health.
In practical terms, I see myself continuously expanding my clinical knowledge and skills to provide the highest quality care. Nursing is a dynamic and ever-evolving field, requiring lifelong learning and adaptability. I am committed to staying abreast of the latest evidence-based practices and technological advancements to enhance patient outcomes. Whether working in acute care, rehabilitation, community health, or specialty nursing, I want to be a competent and confident professional who delivers care with precision and compassion.
One important aspect of my vision is to be an advocate for patients who are often marginalized or underserved, including individuals with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and those from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. My personal experience as an amputee has heightened my awareness of the systemic barriers many face in accessing equitable healthcare. I plan to use my voice to promote inclusivity and accessibility within healthcare settings, ensuring that care is tailored to meet diverse needs. This includes advocating for policies that reduce health disparities, improve patient education, and expand community resources.
I also envision myself playing an active role in health education and prevention efforts. Beyond treating illness, I want to engage in community outreach programs that raise awareness about preventive care, chronic disease management, and mental health support. Educating individuals and families empowers them to take charge of their health and can significantly reduce hospitalizations and improve quality of life. I see myself collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative strategies that address social determinants of health and promote wellness on a broader scale.
Leadership is another integral part of my future nursing vision. I aspire to take on roles that allow me to influence healthcare delivery and foster a culture of empathy, respect, and collaboration among healthcare professionals. Being a leader means not only guiding clinical practice but also mentoring and supporting colleagues to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. I want to contribute to creating healthcare environments where staff feel valued and patients receive holistic, individualized care.
Moreover, I am committed to approaching nursing through a human-centered lens, where empathy and respect guide every interaction. My vision includes integrating holistic care practices that consider mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being alongside physical health. By addressing all aspects of a patient’s experience, I believe nursing can play a vital role in promoting healing and resilience.
In the future, I also aim to contribute to nursing research and education. I recognize the importance of evidence-based practice in advancing healthcare quality and patient safety. Whether through participating in research projects or pursuing advanced education, I want to help generate knowledge that informs better care practices and supports nursing as a respected and evolving profession.
Lastly, my vision involves personal growth and balance. Nursing is a demanding career that requires emotional strength and self-care. I plan to cultivate resilience and mindfulness in my own life to sustain my ability to care for others effectively. Maintaining a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being will enable me to be a compassionate, present, and effective nurse throughout my career.
In summary, my vision for myself as a nurse is to be a compassionate caregiver, a lifelong learner, an advocate for equity, and a leader who inspires positive change. I am motivated by my own health journey to provide empathetic, patient-centered care that respects each person’s unique story. Through continuous learning, advocacy, community engagement, and leadership, I aim to contribute to a healthcare system that is inclusive, accessible, and deeply human. Nursing, for me, is not just a career—it is a calling to serve with kindness, competence, and commitment, making a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals and communities.

1. My personal inspiration for pursuing a career in nursing stems from my own journey as an above-the-knee amputee due to cancer. Facing such a life-altering health challenge brought me face to face with the critical role that compassionate, skilled nurses play in patient care. During my treatment and recovery, nurses were not only caregivers but also sources of emotional support, encouragement, and hope. Their dedication helped me navigate physical pain and emotional uncertainty, inspiring me to want to provide that same level of care and comfort to others.
This experience taught me the importance of resilience, empathy, and human connection in healing. It also revealed how healthcare extends beyond medical procedures; it encompasses emotional and psychological support that empowers patients to face their challenges with dignity. I want to be a nurse who listens attentively, advocates fiercely, and treats each patient as a unique individual with their own story.
Additionally, my journey heightened my awareness of the barriers faced by people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, motivating me to work toward more accessible and inclusive healthcare environments. Nursing offers me the opportunity to combine my passion for science and medicine with a deep commitment to service and advocacy. Ultimately, my inspiration comes from a desire to transform my own challenges into a source of strength and empathy, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I care for.
2.The phrase "human touch" to me embodies the essence of compassionate, personalized care that nurses and healthcare professionals provide beyond clinical tasks. It means connecting with patients on a deeper level—offering warmth, understanding, and presence that acknowledges their humanity during vulnerable moments. Human touch is both literal and metaphorical; it can be a gentle hand on a shoulder, a comforting word, or simply taking the time to listen and truly see the person behind the illness.
In healthcare, this human touch has a powerful impact on patient care. Illness and hospitalization often bring fear, pain, and isolation. When healthcare providers demonstrate genuine empathy and kindness, they help alleviate emotional distress and foster trust. This can lead to better communication, increased patient cooperation, and more accurate assessments of needs. Patients who feel cared for as whole people—not just as cases or symptoms—are more likely to engage actively in their treatment and experience improved outcomes.
Moreover, human touch is essential in building rapport and emotional support. It helps patients feel valued, respected, and understood, which can reduce anxiety and promote healing. For many, the emotional reassurance provided by a nurse’s presence can be as important as the medical interventions themselves. This is particularly true for patients facing chronic conditions, disabilities, or life-altering diagnoses, where psychological well-being is closely tied to physical health.
Human touch also fosters a culture of compassion within healthcare teams. When providers approach their work with empathy and respect, it creates a positive environment that benefits both patients and staff. It encourages collaboration, reduces burnout, and enhances the quality of care delivered.
In summary, human touch is a vital component of effective patient care. It transforms healthcare from a technical process into a deeply human experience, where healing involves not only the body but also the mind and spirit. Embracing this concept is central to my approach as a future nurse, ensuring that every patient feels seen, heard, and supported throughout their healthcare journey.
Leading Through Humanity & Heart Scholarship
1. I am an above-the-knee amputee due to cancer, an experience that has deeply shaped my outlook on life and fueled my passion for human health and wellness. Facing such a significant health challenge taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of compassionate care. Through my own medical journey, I witnessed firsthand how dedicated healthcare professionals made a profound difference—not only in my physical recovery but in my emotional well-being. This inspired me to pursue a career where I can provide the same support and healing to others.
The values that guide me are empathy, perseverance, and a commitment to inclusivity. I believe everyone deserves access to quality healthcare that respects their dignity and individual needs. My experience has also heightened my awareness of the barriers many face in accessing care, driving my passion to advocate for equitable health opportunities. Ultimately, my journey has taught me that health and wellness extend beyond treatment—they encompass understanding, support, and empowering individuals to live their fullest lives. These values and experiences inspire me daily to dedicate myself to improving the lives of others through healthcare.
2.Empathy, to me, is the profound ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It goes beyond sympathy; it involves actively putting oneself in someone else’s position to genuinely comprehend their emotions, struggles, and needs. Empathy is a cornerstone of meaningful human connection, fostering trust, respect, and compassion. In the health-related career I aspire to pursue—nursing—empathy is not just an admirable quality but an essential one. It shapes the way care is delivered and dramatically impacts patient outcomes, satisfaction, and overall well-being.
In nursing, empathy means recognizing that each patient is more than their diagnosis. It means seeing the whole person—their fears, hopes, cultural background, and unique circumstances—and responding with kindness and sensitivity. Health challenges can be frightening, isolating, and overwhelming. When nurses demonstrate empathy, they provide emotional comfort alongside medical care, helping patients feel valued and understood during vulnerable moments. This connection improves communication, encourages patient cooperation, and ultimately supports better healing.
To ensure my work is done through a human-centered lens, I would prioritize active listening and personalized care. This involves taking the time to hear patients’ stories, concerns, and preferences without judgment or assumptions. I would seek to understand not only their medical needs but also their social, emotional, and cultural contexts. This holistic approach helps to tailor care plans that respect patients’ values and empower them to participate in their health decisions.
I also believe in advocating for patients’ rights and dignity, ensuring their voices are heard within the healthcare system. Being attentive to subtle cues, providing clear explanations, and involving patients and families in care decisions are all ways to maintain a human-centered approach. Additionally, I would continuously reflect on my own biases and seek ongoing education to improve cultural competence and sensitivity.
Empathy extends beyond individual interactions; it informs how we design healthcare environments and policies. I would support efforts to create accessible, inclusive, and supportive settings that address barriers patients might face. By fostering a culture of empathy within healthcare teams, I would contribute to an environment where collaboration and mutual respect flourish.
In summary, empathy is fundamental to nursing because it transforms care from a technical task into a healing experience grounded in understanding and compassion. Embracing empathy through a human-centered lens ensures that healthcare is delivered with respect for each person’s unique journey, ultimately promoting dignity, trust, and better health outcomes. This commitment to empathy is what drives my passion for nursing and my dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of patients and communities.

This experience has profoundly shaped who I am today and has deeply influenced my decision to pursue a nursing degree. Throughout my journey, I have developed resilience, empathy, and a strong desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others—qualities that I believe are essential for a successful nursing career.
My reason for pursuing nursing stems from a combination of personal experience and a genuine passion for helping others. Witnessing the impact that skilled and compassionate nurses had on my well-being inspired me to pursue a career where I could offer the same level of care and encouragement to others.
Nursing appeals to me because it combines science, critical thinking, and human connection in a way that few other professions do. I want to be a part of a profession that not only treats illness but also promotes holistic wellness, dignity, and hope.
As an amputee, I have a unique perspective on the challenges patients face—both physically and emotionally—when dealing with serious health issues and life changes. This perspective fuels my commitment to advocate for patient-centered care that respects each individual’s dignity, cultural background, and personal needs. I understand the importance of listening actively, communicating clearly, and providing emotional support alongside medical treatment. I believe these skills are critical to effective nursing and to building trust between patients and healthcare providers.
In addition to my personal motivation, I am committed to making a positive impact in my community through my nursing career. I come from a community where access to quality healthcare is sometimes limited, and many individuals face barriers such as lack of transportation, financial constraints, or language differences. I want to work toward reducing these disparities by providing compassionate, culturally competent care and by educating patients on how to manage their health proactively.
I also plan to be involved in community outreach and health education programs to raise awareness about preventive care, chronic disease management, and mental health. By empowering individuals with knowledge and resources, I hope to help people lead healthier lives and reduce hospital readmissions and emergency visits. Nursing is not just about treating illness; it is about promoting wellness and supporting communities to thrive.
Furthermore , my goal is to contribute to a healthcare environment that is inclusive, accessible, and respectful of all patients, especially those with disabilities or chronic conditions. Drawing from my own experiences, I hope to be a voice for patients who might otherwise feel overlooked or misunderstood.

I am deeply motivated by the opportunity to combine my knowledge skills, and empathy to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and my community. Through nursing, I aim to provide holistic care, advocate for equitable access to healthcare, and inspire hope in those facing health challenges. I'm committed to continuous learning and growth so that I can be the best nurse possible and a positive force in the healthcare field.
Frank and Patty Skerl Educational Scholarship for the Physically Disabled
Being an above-the-knee amputee due to Sarcoma and NSF 1 has profoundly shaped my perspective on life and the world around me. My journey as a part of the disabled community has taught me invaluable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and the importance of empathy, it has also helped me discover a determination deeper than I ever knew I had . Experiencing firsthand the challenges that come with disability has opened my eyes to the barriers many people face daily, from physical obstacles to societal attitudes and systemic inequalities. This has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the strength people demonstrate when overcoming adversity and the critical need for a more inclusive society.
Living with a disability has heightened my awareness of accessibility issues in various environments, whether public spaces, workplaces, or educational institutions. I have learned how seemingly small design choices can either enable or hinder someone’s ability to participate fully and independently. For example, the presence or absence of ramps, elevators, or clear signage can significantly affect mobility and confidence. This understanding drives my commitment to advocate for universal design principles and policies that prioritize inclusivity. I believe that accessibility should not be an afterthought but a fundamental consideration in all aspects of life.
Moreover, being part of the disabled community has taught me the value of diverse experiences and perspectives. Disability is not a limitation on potential; rather, it offers a unique lens through which to view the world. This perspective encourages creativity and innovation in problem-solving, as solutions must often address complex and varied needs. In addition to advocating for physical accessibility, I recognize the importance of fostering a culture of empathy and understanding. Raising awareness about the realities of living with a disability can help dismantle stereotypes and combat stigma. By sharing my story and listening to others, I aim to create spaces where people feel valued and supported regardless of their physical differences.
Overall, my experience as an amputee has shaped me into a more compassionate, determined, and socially conscious individual. This journey continues to inspire my personal growth and commitment to making a meaningful impact.
