Bio

I am a recent high school graduate that graduated with honors and did recent volunteer work at the local animal rescue facility. I maintained a 3.9 GPA and have played soccer since I was 5 years old. I am an ambitious person excited to attend college to see what difference in the world that I can make! I am outgoing, hardworking and appreciate the little things in life. I want to do well in college so my parents, family and peers will be proud of who I have become. I have a fraternal twin sister and my single mother is helping put us through college. We grew up in Michigan and graduated in 2022 from Goodrich High School. I work out daily to keep myself in shape and believe that the mind, body and soul working in harmony is a key to success. I have always worked hard in school and toward my academic career as much as I did soccer and my physical fitness. I hope to be considered for any scholarship that I qualify for so I can achieve my hopes and dreams. Thank you!

One of the most exciting things that I am feeling about going away to college is being on my own for the first time. To be independent and be able to socialize in the college experience. I know there will be a lot of hard work with studying and working a part time job but I am up for the challenge. When I got accepted at Michigan State University one of the first things that I did on their website was to search the site for the physical fitness facility and where it was located in accordance to my dorm. I also signed up for the classes I am taking allowing myself time to be able to go to the gym in between or after classes. During my senior year I became very interested in my health and physical fitness so I joined Planet Fitness where I keep a daily work out schedule. I know and believe in the importance of mind, body and soul connectivity so to keep myself on an even keel I practice weight lifting, cardio and afterwards to complete myself I practice meditation. By maintaining this schedule I feel calm and contented, I have no emotional conflicts within myself or with other people. This helps me become and stay a good person that family and peers can look up to. It gives me the integrity to maintain the honesty and trust my peers look to me for. I feel this is very important to be successful and maintain harmony in oneself. I have maintained this daily work out schedule through my senior year while maintaining a 3.9 GPA and playing soccer where in my senior year I was made captain by my peers. I also volunteered at the local animal rescue facility because I feel it is important to give of yourself and help where and when you can. Being a compassionate person helps me maintain my inner balance and stay on an even keel. My regimen to maintain myself so I have inner balance is I like to get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, stay active and listen to the cues of my body. I feel it is important to stimulate my brain, find balance and care for my mental health. Physical and mental health I have learned is at the root of the hierarchy of needs explained in Maslow's pyramid I learned about in high school. I do not put any kind of toxins in my body, nourish myself with good organic foods and try to avoid excess stress even though this can be difficult while in college, but with concentration and meditation I have been able to achieve it so far. I believe a stressful situation causing negative thoughts can lead to physical pain or illness. It’s important to maintain a healthy balance between your mind, body, and soul by nurturing your whole self, including your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Diet and exercise isn't the only thing that our bodies need. Our mind and body are interconnected and affect each other tremendously. So it is important to read and learn, meditate, work out and eat right. A person needs to also spend time outside, get involved in volunteering or activism, listen to music, be kind and get enough sleep at night. I also believe that it is important for a person to find the right career for themselves that fit their passions. While I am in my busy life I try to live by all these attributes to maintain balance within myself, to be compassionate and happy with myself.
      Lifelong Learning Scholarship
In this day and age especially with all the fast pace changes and the use of technology it is important to find our way around this world and I feel the only way to achieve this is a college degree. I feel that going to college we can find better ways to express ourselves and help out humanity. I also feel higher education is about learning new ways of thinking and acquiring problem-solving skills. Getting a college degree will help me find a career with higher wages and financial security. It will help me become independent and that’s a part of the college experience. It is critical for learning how to navigate life going forward, apart from familiar family and friends. It also exposes people to the different cultures and the diversity of people so we can become more accepting of each other. People with higher education are apt to become more involved within their communities and also shows to have lower crime rates and promotes good citizenship. Through experiences both inside and outside the classroom, students navigate challenges and work through problems independently and collaboratively, making them more employable after graduation. With higher education I can become more productive and identify new skills. It will improve my communication skills, self-esteem and self confidence. It will help develop my critical thinking skills and make me aware of the importance of self discipline. One of the important things that a higher education can do is teach me socialization skills, different ways of thinking and accepting. That there is not only one way to do something, that there is more than one way to look at a problem or dilemma. A person with higher education also achieves better equality and empowerment. There is a hope that the social stigma of different cultures and races can be reduced if society becomes more educated on other peoples differences. This would lead to more acceptance in this country. Lastly, higher education is important to me because it proves to lead to a better quality of life. In life it is said to provide for your children in hopes that they have a better life outcome than the generation before them. My parents worked hard to teach the the morals, values and principles that I hold dear to myself. Through their hard work, scrimping and saving they hope that I can achieve my hopes and dreams of a higher education in my chosen career.

I am 18 years old and have a fraternal twin sister. We have recently graduated and are both accepted to two different universities in the state of Michigan. My parents divorced when we were only 4 years old so this has put a huge burden on my single mother to try and send two children to school at the same time. I remember her as a police officer going off to work everyday when I was just a child, when she retired we were only 8 years old so she had to go back to school so she could get a job with some kind of good income to support us because she didn't get any child support. I remember her going off to college while our grandmother watched us and my mom would be gone all day, coming home in the evening to only do home work for the next day at school. I remember her being so tired but she kept going until she graduated nursing school in 2015. My parents had dual custody of us, so I remember going back and forth week after week until my sister and I turned 18 we then decided to stay with our mother full time because it was such a hassle lugging our belongings between both houses. When I was in high school I entered a competition hosted by Triple A where I wrote an essay describing my favorite hero, I chose my mom and tied for second place. I was so excited to tell her and she was so proud of me for writing the essay and felt honored I was her little girl. After my mom graduated nursing school the next year she entered Eastern Michigan University to finish her bachelor's degree. It was a lot of studying, research and hard work but she managed to graduate Magna Cum Laude. My sister and I were so proud of her. This was when I was inspired by her managing all that she does and working two jobs, that I want to be as hardworking and successful that she has shown my sister and I all our lives. I am very excited to attend college, work and study hard so that finally my mother can be proud of me as I am of her. Going off to college will leave a little void in her life because my sister and I will be gone away for the fall and winter semesters, but she is a strong woman that wants us both to succeed in life and be able to rely on ourselves for our future.

I started playing soccer when I was only 5 years old and stayed with the sport until I graduated high school. I found it a lot of fun playing a team sport. It gave me the ability to learn sportsmanship, team work and helped me form exceptional communication skills. When I was in high school I made the varsity team in my sophomore, junior and senior years. When I was a senior I was named captain of the team because my team mates respected me enough to have sound judgements and leadership skills during the games. We practiced most days after school and with all this and the games I managed to keep my grade point average at a 3.9. When I was a sophomore I also made sophomore class home coming princess and was honored to represent my class during the football game and the parade through town. I graduated high school with the 3.9 grade point average which allowed me to graduate with honors. While I was in high school I did volunteer work at a local animal rescue facility in Fenton, MI called Adopt-A-pet. By volunteering here I became a member of the National Honor Society and was awarded their honor. I enjoyed my time here and all through high school. These experiences that I had has shaped me into the person I am today. I have been accepted to Michigan State University and here I plan on continuing my leadership abilities along with my regular extracurricular activities which will round out my college experience. I plan on going into health and fitness and hope someday to be an entrepreneur. I hope one day to be able to help people learn the importance of their health by encouraging the importance of the mind, body and soul.

Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
The quality I value most with myself would be my integrity. Honesty is the best policy for everything you do; integrity creates character and defines who you are. I am 18 years old and looking forward to going to college, but the most important thing I can possess for future success would be to keep my integrity intact and not let outside negativity deter me from being who I am striving to be. When you are an honest person it cultivates trust from the others around you. When you achieve trust from others it not only makes them want to learn from you but to emulate this in their everyday lives. What a wonderful world this would be. Growing up I watched my single mother do this in everything that she did. She was a police officer who earned a Meritorious Service Award going above and beyond the aspects of duty. When I learned and understood what this award meant I vowed for myself to be the same upstanding person that I know is in my heritage. Integrity was always a part of my life and teachings as I grew up. I bestow this quality that I have in myself from believing and watching my mother in everything that she did. My mother always told me to believe in myself and that I can be anything in this world that I want to be. Not to let stereotypes, bigotries and non believers deter me in what I want to accomplish. Being a woman in this world you already have a set back in some people's thoughts, but I refuse to believe this because I know as a person with integrity and honesty I can overcome any obstacles that stand before me. I feel that a person with integrity allows you to genuinely feel good about yourself and live with a sense of joy, peace of mind and happiness. The extra benefit to living with integrity is that others respect you. They trust you more and are more likely to want to be in relationship with you. I feel that if a person stays committed to their ethical principles they are more likely to have a positive outcome that will effect everyone else around you. So it is important to keep your moral principles at a high standard and follow them at all times no matter who is around you. This outlook and having this quality will only help me be successful and happy with myself and ensure a good future. I want to thank this scholarship for considering me and I enjoyed expressing these feelings.

      Students for Animal Advocacy Scholarship
When I was in high school I volunteered for a local animal rescue facility called Adopt-A-Pet in Fenton, MI. I really enjoyed my time here but all through my life I have been an advocate for animals and pets. Animals enrich our lives in many ways and pets are proven to enrich our lives and even improve our health through companionship, stress reduction, and increasing our physical activity. As a child and growing up I found it hard to watch any commercial that portrayed animal suffering especially during the holidays when the commercials seem to be played the most. I know its important to show this for these agencies to get the needed donations to help and rescue these animals, but it is still hard to watch. As time went on and I got older, I knew there was something I could do so that is why I volunteered my time at the animal rescue facility. As I was growing up my mother used to rescue the little animals and critters that found their way to our back yard in need of help. So I believe watching this also gave me the compassion to do the same thing for any animal in need. I hate to see animals suffer because they are so innocent, loyal, trusting and faithful and I cannot understand how someone can be so cruel to animals when all they want is love and companionship. I have been accepted to attend Michigan State University this fall and some day I hope to own my own pets so I can share the love I have for them. I also hope to be able to continue to volunteer at the local animal shelters so I can at least give these animals some well deserved companionship. In the future, I plan on donating to legitimate animal welfare agencies and programs. I know that my mother did when she could and I always respected her for that. It shows the compassion of a person who is willing to give their time and hard earned money to help an animal. To sum up my essay about animal advocacy, I hope that I am part of the reason why animal cruelty would no longer exist. I know that may seem like a dream to some people but to me I hope I am a big part of why animals are seen to have rights and are entitled to be treated humanely.
First-Year College Students: Jennie Gilbert Daigre Education Scholarship
This helps me become and stay a good leader that team mates and others can look up to. It gives me the integrity to maintain the honesty and trust my peers look to me for.
