Bio

My time at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMass) provided opportunities to unite both passion and education to create a major that is truly unique to me. Earning an Event Planning degree through the Bachelor's With Individualized Concentration, my goals are to create large-scale community events that integrate both art and culture, with applicable educational elements.

    Hobbies Matter
At three years old, my mother enrolled me in a jazz dance class after seeing me twirl and jump around the apartment. Little did she know, she enrolled me into my lifelong hobby. I continued to dance, layering more styles. During my undergraduate career, I almost lost dance. The large university I went to had a plethora of teams, but not enough to meet the demand for the interests. I auditioned for almost every team as time permitted, but was rejected by all. I know that I am not the best dancer, but I could fathom that I would lose my hobby due to a lack of resources to support all those who are interested. My freshman year I did not dance. Financially, I was not in a position to join an outside studio. I worked, but the majority of my paychecks went back to the university in fees. I was drowning in school work and slipped into a depression. When my second year started, a new team formed to embrace tap dancers. Not a single team had a tap team, and I auditioned and thankfully I was successful. During my time with the team, I progressed to a captain to choreograph and teach. I also spent my time participating during the Covid lockdown by advocating for the team's establishment in the University clubs and societies, therefore preserving the team for future dancers to embrace. Furthermore, my postgraduate degree took me across the Atlantic to Queen Margaret University to earn my MA in Arts, Cultural, and Festival Management. With such a dramatic change, I was nervous about integrating into the community, especially during the pandemic. I am thankful that I can continue my dance with the campus team. I am currently taking Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, and other teams. But, my time is limited. I will be staying through the summer to continue my dissertation. There are no campus classes during the summer, as most students return home. My personal goal is to find a studio to dance with the local Scottish community. The funds from the scholarship would cover all of the tuition for the summer, and if I am successful in my Ph.D. application, tuition through the following year. The funds will also be used to purchase new dance shoes, as I have not purchased new ones since I graduated high school. Dance is the only hobby I have continued throughout my life. I have utilized the platform to express my emotions through choreography. I enjoy dancing as a hobby. It connects me to my emotional self and provides a space for me to breathe and grow. Dance also serves as a space for me to better my physical self and grow in confidence. I constantly battle self-criticism, and dance pushes me to understand my body and its needs. Lastly, dance is not always an emotional bubble, but sometimes it is simply fun. Mood-boosting, crazy, and a space to share with others.
