Two years ago, my life changed forever because my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Know one in my family had ever been diagnosed with any forms of cancer which is the reason the diagnosis was such a shock. I witnessed my mother’s health deteriorate with each chemotherapy dose and radiation session. However, what kept me encouraged throughout the process was my mother’s healthcare team. Her oncology nurses provided her with a quality and compassionate healthcare experience. The care that she received was administered with grace, compassion, honor and an overall understanding of the emotional and physical toll she was experiencing at the moment. This specific experience ignited my desire to enter the nursing profession. I plan to start my career in the nursing profession as a community health nurse in lower socioeconomic communities with a specific focus on rural communities. After I have gained at least six years of experience in the nursing field, I plan to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. Hence, once I become a nurse practitioner, I desire to continue serving underserved and rural communities. Within rural communities, I also want to focus on serving migrant farm workers as they struggle with similar challenges as other underserved populations but face additional challenges of mobility, language, cultural differences, lack of familiarity with local health care, and limited eligibility to publicly funded healthcare programs.
