Kelly S. Ellis Athletic Training Scholarship
My passion for athletic training stems from the desire to help others and remain connected to the game. After witnessing my brothers struggle with injuries and a lack of proper care in high school and junior high, I realized how vital skilled healthcare professionals are in athletic settings. One critical moment came when my youngest brother collapsed mid-play during a junior football game. At that level, there was no athletic trainer present, and at the time, most people knew little about the profession. The situation could have ended tragically, but thankfully my parents acted quickly and took him to the doctor. We later learned he had a congenital heart defect and could have lost his life playing the sport he loved.
That moment shaped my purpose. I chose athletic training because I want to be an advocate for the profession, educate others about it, and be the person my brother didn’t have on the field that day. My motivation also comes from wanting to extend resources and education to athletic trainers and others, who may not have access to them. It wasn’t that no one wanted to help my brother, it was that they simply didn’t know how.
My future goal is to become a certified athletic trainer at the secondary school level, with a vision of improving healthcare access and education for underrepresented athletes. I also aspire to mentor future athletic training students, particularly those from minority backgrounds, to help diversify the field and strengthen culturally competent care. Through my involvement in NATA and SWATA, I’ve met many inspiring professionals who look like me, have poured their wisdom into me, and have shown me the value of mentorships, which is something I hope to pass on to the next generation.
During my time in the athletic training program, I have served as Outreach Coordinator for the Athletic Training Student Society (ATSS), organizing volunteer events, community engagement initiatives and creating events where it is not just about athletic training, because outside of the profession we must realize that we are human beings. I currently serve as Secretary of the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association (SWATA) Student Senate, stepping into a regional leadership role where I advocate for fellow students, create networking opportunities, assist in developing the student track for the SWATA Annual Meeting, and help shape the future of the profession. I also manage the SWATA Student Liaison group, connecting undergraduate and graduate students to networking events, master’s programs, mentorships, and educational resources. These roles have allowed me to give back to my community while challenging me to grow as both a leader and a professional, reinforcing my commitment to the athletic training profession.
