Bio

Current registered medical assistant. Seeking to change career paths. I still want to work in healthcare as I am still very compassionate to helping others in their healthcare outcomes. I will be pursuing an associate degree in radiology technology. My life goals are to still be a conduit in helping maintain the sick and needy with their healthcare. Also, to close those gaps in healthcare biases with women of color. I want to continue to be the "voice" for those who look like me who are unable to be successful in being their own voices.

I have taken a special interest in radiology. Without radiology, patients cannot get the proper diagnosis in the specialty that I am currently working in. I work in a Liver clinic, combined with gastroenterology. We need to send patients to radiology to get imaging of the liver and complete abdomen to ensure proper care. We also refer patients to interventional radiology., to get parencentesis. This special procedure helps drain the fluid retained in patients who has a diagnosis of ascites from alcohol abuse. Working with interventional radiology, helps me further understand the importance of this field. Aside of the liver, we also need to send patients to get MRI’S, X-RAYS, and CT scans of the abdomen. These exams give the providers a better look at what may be the issue with the patient. After seeing what is going on, when then go forward to schedule the procedures that are necessary for the issue. Which includes, endoscopies, colonoscopies, endoscopic ultrasounds, flex sigmoidoscopies etc.… These exams also help put a sense of “ease” to the patients on what is going on with their health. Without it, patients wouldn’t be able to sustain a healthier and more live-able lifestyle. I broke my femur bone back in 2012. Without the rad techs helping me to relax and being there to support me while I was in pain while taking the pics of my leg to see where exactly it was broken at. I wouldn’t have been able to get the best care and surgery for my leg. I haven’t had any issues or problems with my leg since the surgery! I personally chose this field, because I want to be a representation of what I feel is needed. Many ppl are unaware of this field of work and what it entails. Rad techs are in high demand because of it. I want to be apart of this especially as a black woman. I don’t see many people who look like me in this field of work. I am at a point in my life where I want to continue to work in healthcare without something that wouldn't require as much “hands on work” as I do now. With drawing blood and vitals etc. I want to continue to be the conduit in the sustainability to healthcare and diagnosis! Being a part of something that is greater than me has always been a goal of mine.

As a mother, I have always been the one to carry the weight, burdens and struggles on my back. In the past, I have pursued an education so that I can properly provide and raise my child. I went to school when my daughter was 1yr old so that I can give myself and my child a good shot at life. I am currently working in the healthcare field as a registered medical assistant, which is the career I choose almost 10yrs ago. However, I am ready to switch career paths. My daughter and the impact she has had on me to push harder to give her a more substantial life and future is my core motivation. All while being a single mother, my daughter has always maintained a 4.0 grade average and has always been in extracurricular activities to advance her in life. I want better for the both of us. Having to juggle life itself with making sure dinner is on the stove every night, to homework, bills and extracurricular activities that can be a lot on a daily basis for one person. Parenthood is my ultimate responsibility. I work full time and with the inflation, it is starting to take a toll on my finances. I can see the difference in just the small things (food, gas, etc.). I have decided to go back to school so that I can maintain "breathing room" for my finances. Working as a single mother is a huge multitask. It requires perseverance and resilience. I get up every morning around 6 a.m. and have to make sure I get my daughter off to school and me to work on time. My work schedule is Mon-Fri. Even with working full time, personal living expenses can be a lot for us. Living on a medical assistant salary is no longer operable for my household. I will be starting school in two weeks to pursue a radiology technology degree at Dunwoody Technical College. I will be obtaining an associate's degree. My school schedule is full time, and I will have to drop down in hours for work. I have struggled with anxiety because I am unsure of what my future holds. I go back and forth with wondering if I can sustain in life with dropping down in hours at work and still being able to manage a household on my own. I have been working in my career field for 5yrs. I still want to work in the healthcare field, but not so much with "hands on" work. Radiology techs are in high demand. I figured this choice of work, would be perfect for me. I still want to be a conduit in helping people get better with their healthcare outcomes. I am very compassionate about helping others. Although, this will be a personal challenge for me., I am going into this knowing that this may be one of the harder things I've had to do. I have a good support system to keep me going and encourage me. My biggest encouragement is my daughter. I want a better life for her and to give her the opportunity to be able to pick and choose what she would want to be in life. I don't want her to feel like she would have her back against the wall to make rash decisions or cause unnecessary issues and or problems. I still have to pay out of pocket for school. Financial aid isn't covering all of my tuition. This scholarship will help me tremendously with school loans!
