Bio

My goal and dream has always been to be a Nurse. I currently work as a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician and I love my job. Ever since I was a young child, It was a calling that came to me early on. I love to help people. I am a Native American woman with a AAS in Business and Entrepreneurship and want to continue to fulfill my nursing degree also. I am compassionate about working and helping others, and would like to potentially either continue working in dialysis or Indian Health Services, and/or a healthcare facility that suites my interests. I have paid a large sum of my tuition on my own out of pocket and am truly grateful for any and/or all assistance given to me. I am planning on attending the Nursing Program soon, and am seeking all opportunities to help me to fulfill my dreams.

Growing up bi-culturally, my father was Anglo and my mother Native American Hualapai descent. My mother practically raised my two older brothers along with myself as a single parent. Both parents divorced when I was 12. My father was unappreciative of our Native culture including it’s teaching within our family of origin household. This impacted my identity as a Hualapai Native of who I was and the historical traumas our ancestors experienced for our existence. Growing up, my great paternal uncle and grandmother had a tremendous impact on my Native life. They spent a significant time in my childhood imparting the Hualapai language and it’s culture by oral traditions. This Elder experience offered a hands on experience of our Hualapai way of life. Both have passed onto spirit world during my grade school and I later realized the gap in years of learning my cultural guidance and the aforementioned of my father’s challenges to accept our Hualapai culture affected understanding who I was. I enrolled into college following successfully completing High School. In 2013, I obtained employment with my community at Grand Canyon Resort Corporation (GCRC). This is where I became immersed in my culture where I also work alongside my Native People. While employed with GCRC (Grand Canyon- West Rim) I accepted an opportunity to apply for a Leadership Program the corporation was offering Tribal employees. I was accepted into the Leadership Program. I learned life skills of selfless, being humble, and understanding the concept of you cannot help others until you have helped yourself. We gained awareness of self-discipline, cultural values, and roles within our tribe. We experienced tanning hide, make yucca twine, cradleboards, and other related Hualapai way of life responsibilities. In completing the Leadership Program it offered an opportunity to attend Business School, which I accepted. The Business College was a two year with a 3 month rotation schedule to experience department’s organization. I successfully obtained my Associate Degree in Business and Entrepreneurship. During this time I maintained employment with GCRC for overall eight years. This employment experience strengthen my Hualapai identity and the opportunity to be employed with my Native Peoples and the experienced in the Leadership Program was rewarding and laid a foundation in my higher education. Although the GCRC experience was rewarding, I continued to feel unaccomplished. Thankful, yes, but not personally satisfied with an underlying ambition to seek a career in healthcare. Unfortunately, I left my GCRC employment to established employment with a Dialysis Center in my hometown Kingman, Arizona which is 45 minutes west of the reservation. With no healthcare experience, I gained onsite training and my position as a Hemodialysis Technician strengthened my love, helping people, and being able to still work with my Native People and/or Elders. I continued to see familiar faces from my Native Community. I established Certification as a Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician and have three years employment with the Dialysis Center to current. This experience has empowered me to enroll into a Nursing College Program. My goal is to obtain a Nursing Degree to seek employment in the nursing field, or with Indian Health Services. In conclusion, my heritage has guided me in a healthy journey to understand my Hualapai identity by Elders and Native Community employment. This establish a foundation of life values and a career calling. These values and my ambition to achieve a Degree in Nursing is a calling I feel within my heart. I would be honored to be recipient of Chaweka Lynn Fisher Scholarship to support my academic goal to become a degreed nurse. Ma’ Hankyu. (That’s all, Thank you).
