From Childhood Dreams to a Career in Pediatric Nursing
As a kid, I always dreamed of becoming a doctor. The thought of helping people heal and making a real difference in their lives, especially when they were at their most vulnerable, fascinated me. I would play doctor with my siblings, pretending to diagnose their imaginary illnesses and offering “treatments” like Band-Aids and comforting words. As I got older, my passion was only intensified by my love for Grey’s Anatomy. I would sit glued to the screen, completely mesmerized by the doctors saving lives, making tough calls, and being the ones patients turned to in their darkest hours. I wanted to be one of them—the person who helped, who reassured, who truly made a difference.
As time went on, my dream evolved—not because I lost my passion for healthcare, but because I found a path that felt even more personal and rewarding: pediatric nursing. My journey into nursing was shaped by my own experiences and the circumstances around me. Growing up in a low-income family, I saw firsthand the struggles families face when trying to access quality healthcare. My own family dealt with financial challenges, and I know what it feels like to be helpless when it comes to medical issues. These experiences only fueled my desire to enter the healthcare field, not just as a provider, but as someone who delivers compassionate, patient-centered care.

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) has been my first step toward achieving my dream. Working as a CNA will give me the hands-on experience I need in patient care, help me develop essential skills, and allow me to form meaningful connections with patients. Ultimately, I aim to become a pediatric nurse, where I can blend my passion for medicine with my love for working with children. I want to be that comforting presence for young patients and their families, ensuring they feel supported during tough times. While Grey’s Anatomy is just a show, the compassion and dedication I saw in those characters really inspired me to pursue a career where I can make a real difference in people’s lives.
For me, pursuing this career isn’t just about financial stability or professional success; it’s about leaving a lasting impact. It’s about being there for children who are scared and in pain, easing the worries of their parents, and providing care that goes beyond just medical treatment. I’m determined to succeed, not just for myself but for all the children I hope to help in the future.
Receiving this scholarship would be a vital step in turning my dream into reality. As a first-generation college student, I face significant financial challenges, but I won’t let them dictate my future. With this support, I can continue my education, gain the training I need, and work toward becoming the nurse I’ve always envisioned. I’m ready to commit myself to this journey, and I believe that with determination, resilience, and the right support, I can achieve my goal of making a meaningful difference in pediatric healthcare.
Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
When the car pulled up, I ran for cover, hiding under the table as they came inside. Holding my breath, I hoped they wouldn’t see me as they stomped downstairs. Soon they were towering above me, their feet inches from my face. At last, I leaped from my hiding place and yelled, “BOO!”
When my mother would take my sisters to the store, I would attempt to jump-scare them upon their return. Despite my lack of skill, my mom would always startle. Laughing, we would break out the candy and watch a movie together. Those were some of the happiest moments of my childhood.
That is the last cheerful memory I have of her. My mother died when I was five years old. Her loss devastated me, altering my life forever. I would never be able to laugh with her again. My world became one of grief and uncertainty, but my family stood by my side. Whenever the sadness overwhelmed me, my family would bring out a board game to lift my spirits. I would rarely win—my uncles were always victorious—but the joy of playing together remains one of my fondest memories.
Losing my mother was only the beginning. After her passing, my father was arrested, and I never saw him again. I lost both of my parents before I even understood what that truly meant. I was terrified and uncertain about my future. But amid that fear, my grandmother stepped in to care for me. She became my anchor, my guiding force. My grandmother did everything she could to provide for me, sacrificing so much to ensure I had what I needed. She taught me resilience, independence, and strength. She showed me that I did not need a man to define my success or determine my future. Because of her, I learned that I could be strong on my own.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. Experiencing the anguish of losing a loved one at such a young age made me determined to help others avoid that pain. As a child, I believed I could cure every illness, that I could somehow save everyone. While I now understand that is not realistic, my desire to help remains unwavering. I want to be a source of comfort and healing for others during their most vulnerable moments. This passion is why I aspire to become a nurse. Nursing will allow me to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, offering care not only to patients but also to the families struggling beside them.
Being raised by my grandmother in a single-parent household has profoundly shaped my ambitions and my view of the world. I have witnessed firsthand what it means to sacrifice for the well-being of others, and that has deeply influenced my desire to give back. My experiences have instilled in me a strong sense of empathy, resilience, and determination—qualities that will serve me well in my future career.
Looking toward the future, I see myself using my talents to do good, no matter where my path takes me. Whether through nursing or another avenue, my goal remains the same: to help others, to offer comfort, and to make the world a little bit kinder. Regardless of the obstacles I have faced, I am determined to create a future where I can use my experiences to uplift those in need.
Thank you for this opportunity. Even if I do not win, I am grateful that you are helping students like me pursue their dreams.

I have discovered that failure is irrelevant as long as one acquires knowledge and has fun. How do you learn without making mistakes? Personally, I learn best if I make an error, own up to it, and then identify what needs to be altered for next time.

Having experienced the anguish of losing a loved one myself, I was determined to spare others from going through that pain. During my childhood, I believed that I could cure everyone. I now realize that was nothing but a fanciful story. Even still, I wish to help as many people as possible. In order to do that I wish to become a nurse, being a nurse would allow me to reduce the pain that the patient and their families go through with sickness.
Helping people is my passion. I am thankful for everyone that has shown me the support I needed after my mother's death. And I want to pay it forward by helping people, gaining more knowledge will allow me to give more support to others. I want to be able to cure as many people as possible so that they have less pain to endure. And with this scholarship, I will be one step closer to making my dream a reality. It will also give me more time to volunteering, increasing the number of people that I am able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I truly appreciate you.

When my mother would go with my sisters to the store I would attempt to jump-scare them. Despite my lack of skill, my mom would always startle me. Laughing, we would break out the candy and watch a movie, it was the highlight of my day
That is the last cheerful memory I have of her. My mother died when I was five years old. I was devastated, my life was forever altered. I would never be able to laugh with her again. Through all that struggle and heartache, my family has been right by my side. Whenever the grief hit hard my family would break out a board game which never failed to make me smile. I would rarely win as my uncles would always come out on top but playing games remains among my favorite things to do despite losing. Failure is often perceived as a negative. I have discovered that failure is irrelevant as long as one acquires knowledge and has fun. How do you learn without making mistakes? Personally, I learn best if I make an error, own up to it, and then identify what needs to be altered for next time.
Gaining new skills is something that I enjoy, especially in science. I have taken many different science classes throughout high school. Including anatomy and physiology, physics, AP environmental, etc. Science has always been my favorite subject and I greatly enjoy learning it, especially if it focuses on medicine. I will have taken a total of seven medical classes throughout high school six of which I have gotten college credit for. Through these classes, I have earned a certificate in medical office administrative assistant and a student achievement award for anatomy and physiology. The science classes I have taken have reinforced my love for medicine.

People always say that they are sorry for me when I inform them about my mother. Though I appreciate their sympathy, I do not feel sorry for myself. The passing of my mother caused me and my family a great amount of pain and heartache. But without pain, there is no pleasure. Without heartache, there is no joy. And what is life without joy and pleasure? Pain and suffering have taught me to learn and become the best nurse that I can be. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am truly grateful that you are bring someone one step closer to making there dream a reality.

I love kids and I want to help them in any way that I can.

I have volunteered for my community. During my sophomore year I helped my high school custodial staff clean up the school. It was fulfilling to be able to show appreciation to the people that keep my school clean. I have also volunteered to help with events for elementary and middle schoolers. For example, during senior year I decorated my car and set up everything for kids to trunk or treat at my high school. We dressed up and passed out candy to all of the kids, putting a giant smile on their faces. I have volunteered for the middle school field day as well. Giving them the chance to get out of the classroom and have fun.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. I lost my mother when I was five years old due to a pulmonary embolism. Having experienced the anguish of losing a loved one myself, I was determined to spare others from going through that pain. During my childhood, I believed that I could cure everyone. I now realize that was nothing but a fanciful story. Even still, I wish to help as many people as possible.
After my mother's death, there were so many people by my side helping us even if it was something as simple as bringing a cooked meal. It was a nice reprieve for my grandmother, one less thing that she had to worry about. That is my goal, I want to help people who have experienced the loss of a loved one and give them the support that they need. Even if it is seemingly simple things I know firsthand how helpful it is. It gave us hope that we could get through this. That is what community service means to me—allowing people to see that there are people by their side who are there to get them through all of the hard times.
I am currently volunteering at the children's hospital. This allows me to bring a smile to children who are sick. It is amazing to see how children can still have a smile on their faces no matter how ill they are. And it is so fulfilling to know that I was able to help them with that. Even something as simple as playing Uno with them will let them see that they still have an amazing life ahead of them. It gives them the hope that they need to keep fighting.
Community service is a simple act given to help people get through rough times. It is so simple to do and takes little effort. It only takes time out of your day, but I believe that the time is well spent helping others.

During my freshman year of high school, I was absolutely terrified and felt as if I did not fit in at all. I did not know anyone and didn't know what to do. That is why, during my junior and senior years, I made it easier for the incoming freshmen. I wanted to prevent them from feeling the way I did. I was a link leader, so I helped the incoming freshmen learn their schedules. The hardest part of freshman year for me was finding my classes. Through this program, I helped others learn where their classes were so that they had one less thing to worry about. In addition, I gave them a friendly face to look up to. That way, when they came in the next day, they had someone they could ask for help. It made them feel less alone and gave them the needed support for their journey through high school.
Furthermore, I have volunteered for my community. During my sophomore year, I helped my high school custodial staff clean up the school. This is why if I were to start my own charity it would be to aid families who have lost their loved ones. I know firsthand the pain that they went through and I would give them all the resources they need to go on with life. My mission would be to ensure that all families who lose a loved one are given the support that they need. I would have volunteers offer to clean their houses, make dinners, donate food, etc. After my mother's death, my Grandmother did not want to cook or clean. The most helpful thing was when people brought us food or helped clean up the house. Because my Grandma did not have the energy to do those seemingly simple tasks. And even though it may not have seemed like much it meant the world to me and my family to have one less thing to worry about.

In addition to my mother my grandfather died as well. He was a very strong and driven man and it was devasting to lose him. He was in the Vietnam war and couldn't handle the pain of everything he went through. Unfortunately, he committed suicide. That is why I want to also focus on patients that were in the military. I saw how the war affected my grandfather and I want to ensure that no one else goes through that pain alone.

Being sick as a child is a terrible experience, but despite this, they keep fighting with a smile on there faces and it is so inspiring to see.

That way when they came in the next day they had someone that they could ask for help. It made them feel less alone and gave them the needed support for their journey through high school.
Furthermore, I have volunteered for my community. During my sophomore year, I helped my high school custodial staff clean up the school. It was fulfilling to be able to show appreciation to the people who keep my school clean.
To do that I wish to become a doctor. Being a physician would allow me to reduce the pain that the patient and their families go through with sickness.
This scholarship would allow me to go through college without the worry of money. Money has always been a big issue in my family. When I told my grandmother that I wanted to be a doctor the first thing she asked was how much it would cost. But with the help of this scholarship, I will be able to follow my dreams without worry. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship, I truly appreciate it. Even if I do not win it I am thankful that you are helping students to follow their dreams.
Curtis Holloway Memorial Scholarship
My Grandmother has supported me the most in my pursuit of higher education. She has been there every step of the way in my journey to become a nurse. Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to go into medicine. When I was six I would constantly watch Doc Mcstuffins and play with my toy stethoscope. I would pretend that my stuffed animals were patients and fix them up. My Grandma was right there by my side assisting me, even through the silly games. Ever since then, I have dreamed about being a doctor. It had made me happy as a kid and still does to this day. As I got older I fell in love with science and watched all the doctor shows I could find. Getting to watch nurses and doctors take a sick person and bring them back to health excited me, even if it was fictional characters. I would watch the TV and imagine that I was the person doing the impossible. I would imagine being able to help people. It was my dream to be a nurse, and my Grandmother always showed her support. After I lost my parents my confidence faded. I believed that I wasn't good enough and that I would never be able to reach my dreams. My Grandma didn't think that for a second. Whenever someone told me that I couldn't do it my Grandmother was right by my side. "Don't listen to them," she said, "you will change the world." There have been a lot of people who doubted me, including myself at times. The entire time she knew. She knew that I would be able to do it and she has helped me in every way that she could. Every single time that I doubted myself she would take me by the hand and tell me "You can do anything you set your mind to." She helped guide me through the self-doubt and built up my confidence. If I had a test she was right there holding the flash cards, even if she didn't understand it at all. And most of the time she didnt, but she still tried to help anyway. Whenever she is around I am unstoppable. I can do anything, no matter how difficult. I would not be the person I am today without her. Without her, I would not have the confidence to even attempt to chase my dreams. I know without a doubt that my grandmother would support me in anything that I do, no matter what. I know that she will love me unconditionally. And knowing that has been crucial in my journey. My Grandma has been there for me and I know that she always will be.
Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success can have many different definitions, for some people it's money or fame but for me it is happiness. I want to be able to do what I love and make others happy in the process. I love science, math, reading, kids, and helping people. And I don't want to work my entire life at a job that I hate. To get everything that I want in life I want to become a nurse. I have always been fascinated with the human body and medicine. And have always enjoyed being around kids and witnessing the world through their eyes. Being a pediatric nurse would allow me to do everything that I love and help people along the way. Being able to help others makes me happy, especially kids. They are so carefree and innocent, and I want to help them stay that way and not have to worry about their health. Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to go into medicine. When I was six I would constantly watch Doc Mcstuffins and play with my toy stethoscope. I would pretend that my stuffed animals were patients and fix them up. I would imagine being able to cure the sick and end their suffering. I know now that I can't do that for everyone, but I can try and help as many people as possible. Success is loving what I do with all my heart, and I just love nursing. The thought of being able to help kids reach full health just fills me with joy. I have always loved kids, but I have seen some suffer from health issues. I have watched my friends experience pain due to a disease. I watched my little sister go through the pain of a broken bone and it killed me. The fact that I wasn't able to help her ripped my heart out. I cannot watch somebody feel that agony without doing everything that I can to help them. I want to be able to end their suffering in any way that I can. My definition of success is having a life that you enjoy and wouldn't change for the world. Being a nurse would allow me to accomplish that. This scholarship would allow me to reach my dream and become the person that my six-year-old self dreamed of. It would allow me to go through college without having to worry about money. I want to be able to help kids without having to worry about all the debt I am in. I don't care about being rich, or famous. That doesn't matter to me, what matters to me is being a good person inside and out, helping everyone that I can, and enjoying every minute of it. Reaching my dream would allow me to do that. This opportunity would allow me to become the greatest nurse I can be without having to worry about money. Whether or not you give me the scholarship I will become the best nurse that I can be. Though I would be forever grateful if I did get it. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
