As s survivor of Domestic Violence, I have worked through the family court system to protect my daughter and myself in two states for the last five years. In 2020, during the COVID-19 shutdown, I lost my 24-year photography and marketing consultant career. I returned to college full-time at 45 and explored trauma's effects on survivors and children in my free time. My research on trauma has taught me that the body keeps score and symptoms that arise from trauma can be healed. This research naturally brought me to reconsider my studies and purpose in life. After two semesters of marketing, I changed my major to psychology with a minor in criminal justice. My current undergraduate studies will allow me to continue to move forward in obtaining my Master's Degree, focusing on forensic psychology in the family courtroom. This degree will provide an avenue to help modify laws by advocating, educating, and working within the system.
Since 2021, I've maintained a 3.83 GPA at Washington State University. My course workload is more than full-time, and I spend a minimum of 40 hours per week on my studies, in addition to homeschooling my daughter. Lastly, fighting for our continued safety through the court system, filing and answering motions, and attending hearings, never ceases year-round.
I am committed to finishing my undergraduate degree to provide a secure future for my family. More importantly, I want to show my daughter how to work hard, overcome obstacles, grow stronger, and make a difference for others.

Dounya Discala Scholarship
As s survivor of Domestic Violence, I have worked through the family court system to protect my daughter and myself in two states for the last five years. The process was - and is - arduous, time-consuming, and expensive. It also requires me to repeatedly relive each abusive event in court, proving the abuse happened. With each motion filed and each hearing attended, my body and mind involuntarily expressed post-traumatic stress disorder signs. The knowledge journey on trauma stemmed from my desperate need to understand and heal my past traumatic experiences from the years of experiencing domestic violence and the continued abuse publicly in the family courtroom fighting for our safety. Something needed to change. I had to break the cycle of abuse and heal.
My research on trauma led me to learn extensive course studies on families in poverty, violence towards women, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The research, paired with knowledge from behavioral science in psychology classes, taught me that the body keeps score. The long-term effects of traumatic events create a cyclical pattern of health issues in children, adolescents, and adults. However, the symptoms that arise from trauma can heal, as I discovered through eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
In family court, protecting victims of domestic violence and prioritizing child safety is not usually considered. Only the rights of the parent are. As I unfortunately discovered personally, abusers adamantly deny the abuse happened, attack their victim through shaming, and reverse the accusations by blaming them and becoming a victim themselves. My personal experience in family court and my healing journey naturally made me reconsider my studies and purpose in life. After one semester of marketing, I changed my major to psychology with a minor in criminal justice. My research is excellent, and writing strategic paperwork is invigorating. I am passionate about changing the importance of prioritizing child safety and domestic violence survivors in the family law system. Each day, I find myself passionate about my coursework, hopeful for my future and empowered in my healing journey. During this career, research further ignited a passion in me that I had never felt before. I have found my purpose.
My course workload is more than full-time, and I spend a minimum of 40 hours per week on my studies. Additionally, I homeschool my 5-year-old daughter and commit 25 hours to her education and extracurricular activities. Lastly, fighting for our continued safety through the court system, filing and answering motions, and attending hearings, never ceases year-round. As a single mother, I've been able to do this because we live with my parents whose support in helping me raise my daughter is a tremendous blessing.

As a single mother, I've been able to do this because we live with my elderly parents. Their support in helping me raise my daughter is a tremendous blessing. However, pursuing my higher education requires additional outside financial assistance.
I am committed to finishing my undergraduate degree to provide a secure future for my family. More importantly, I want to show my daughter how to work hard, overcome obstacles, grow stronger, and make a difference for others.
