Scholarship for Student Perseverance
When I came to college I struggled with body image, social life, and communication. I found myself locked in my room with thoughts of depression, anxiety, self harm, and suicide. One night I needed help extremely bad. I called a friend from home and he instructed me to find a therapist immediately. That night I scheduled an appointment with an on campus therapist and it was the best choice I have ever made. I never understood depression until this experience. My therapist helped guide me through choices, and stress. She helped me make goals that were attainable for each day so I could once again feel like a functioning unit of society. I hope to educate people about mental health by using my own experiences.
Pool Family LGBT+ Scholarship
I have been part of the LGBTQ+ community my whole life. I have always known I am not a straight woman but I have never forced myself to label my sexuality. I was bullied a lot in high school and as a result I only came out as queer to my close friends. My family doesn't even know yet. I think it's the most personal thing I own. No one can touch it but me and I have the power or change it anytime I'd like to because sexuality is fluid for me. I hope to become a doctor and help little boys and girls through their self finding and help the quantify their sexuality if thats something they're interested in talking about and learning more about. I hope to create a safe space for them that can be a fluid conversation.
Mary P. Perlea Scholarship Fund
As a woman in STEM in today's society, I feel a lot of pressure from societal norms. I would love to become a doctor but its hard in the field dominated by men. I grew up in a place where we didn't have much money. My dads an alcoholic and my mother works two jobs to keep my family afloat. This past year I paid for school through scholarship and emptying my own savings account. My parents provided me with no financial help. I fear I won't be able to afford the intense and long education I need to become a doctor. When I do become a doctor I will help little girls and boys become what they were destined to do but I can only help them if i make it through years and years of expensive education. My family does not have the funds to help me become what I am meant to be.
