Growing up with a single mother has shaped me into the person I am today. While my childhood was not always easy, the challenges my family faced taught me valuable lessons about resilience, perseverance, and maintaining a positive attitude during difficult times. One of the biggest challenges was watching my mother navigate conflict and difficulties involving my father while still doing everything she could to provide for our family. There were times when I could see the stress she carried, but she never allowed those struggles to define her. Instead, she continued to work hard, support us, and make sure we had what we needed. Seeing her strength during those moments showed me what true determination looks like. My mother’s example taught me that life will not always go according to plan. There will be obstacles, disappointments, and situations that feel unfair. However, she showed me that no matter what happens, you have to keep moving forward. She taught me the importance of keeping my head up, staying focused on my goals, and refusing to let challenges stop me from becoming the best version of myself. Growing up in these circumstances also taught me maturity at a young age. I learned to appreciate the value of hard work and not take things for granted. Watching my mother balance responsibilities while putting our needs before her own showed me what sacrifice truly means. Her determination inspired me to stay focused in school, work hard in everything I do, and approach challenges with a positive mindset. Whenever I face difficulties, I remember the example she set and remind myself that obstacles are not excuses to quit but opportunities to grow stronger. Because of her sacrifices, I have developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the opportunities I have been given. I understand that success does not come easily and that achieving my goals requires dedication and persistence. The lessons I learned from my mother have motivated me to pursue higher education and work toward a future where I can support my family and make a positive impact on others. Although growing up with a single mother came with challenges, it also gave me one of the greatest role models I could have asked for. Her strength, determination, and selflessness have inspired me every day. The experiences we have shared have taught me that difficult circumstances do not determine your future—your attitude, effort, and perseverance do. Because of my mother, I have learned to face adversity with confidence and to always keep my head up, no matter what life brings.

My life experiences have really defined my goals by instilling theimportance of working hard, persevering, and helping others. I learned early on that being successful is not handed to you; you have to work for it. Seeing how much my family sacrificed has motivated me to work hard in school so I can have a bright future. For me, an example is the simple act of me being a first generation college student. By us achieving a goal that those before us could not, we are breaking barriers and setting an example for our own future children. I strive to do well in college knowing how much this accomplishment means. These lessons have led me to see thatmy success is not limited to myself; I want to do my part to help make the world a better place and use what I learn to help my family, community and country. I want people to see me as someone who offers opportunities and addresses problems. I want to work through college to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to translate that inspiration into action. All of my experiences to date have shown me that my challenge can become my greatest opportunityand I want to use that realization to shape a future of leadership, service and impact.

Sports have always been a major part of my life, shaping who I am both on and off the field. Through playing sports, I’ve learned discipline, teamwork, and the importance of consistency. Whether it’s early practices, long workouts, or pushing through tough losses, athletics have taught me how to stay committed to a goal even when things get difficult. These experiences have built a strong foundation for my character and have prepared me for challenges beyond sports. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to see how the mindset I developed through sports connects directly to my growing interest in business. In my family, there has been a noticeable shift—almost like an outburst—toward understanding money, building wealth, and creating opportunities. Conversations that once focused on day-to-day survival have turned into discussions about investing, entrepreneurship, and financial growth. Watching this change has inspired me to take business seriously and see it not just as a career path, but as a way to create lasting impact. The competitive nature of sports has influenced how I approach business. Just like in a game, success in business requires preparation, strategy, and the ability to adapt. You have to study your competition, understand your strengths, and be willing to make adjustments when things don’t go as planned. I’ve learned that losing is not failure—it’s an opportunity to improve. That same mindset pushes me to keep learning about finance and business so I can grow and succeed in the future. At the same time, my family’s growing focus on business has shown me the bigger picture. It’s not just about making money—it’s about creating stability and opportunities for others. I’ve seen how financial knowledge can change the direction of a family, opening doors that once seemed impossible to reach. This motivates me to not only succeed for myself, but to bring others along with me. I want to be someone who can create opportunities, support my family, and give back to my community. Balancing sports and academics has also taught me time management and responsibility. Being able to stay focused in school while committing to athletics is not easy, but it has helped me develop a strong work ethic. I understand that success doesn’t come overnight—it’s built through consistent effort over time. This lesson applies directly to business, where patience and persistence are key. Looking ahead, I plan to continue studying business and finance so I can turn my passion into a career that makes a difference. I want to combine the discipline I’ve gained from sports with the knowledge I gain from my education to build something meaningful. Whether it’s starting a business, investing, or helping others understand financial literacy, my goal is to create a positive impact. Sports gave me the mindset, and my family gave me the vision. Together, they have shaped my path and motivated me to pursue a future where I can succeed and help others do the same.

Growing up in a single-parent and low-income household has shaped the way I see the world and the way I approach challenges. Watching my parent work hard every day to provide for our family showed me what perseverance and determination truly look like. There were times when things were difficult, and we had to make sacrifices, but those experiences taught me resilience and the importance of never giving up. Instead of letting those challenges hold me back, they motivated me to work harder and pursue opportunities that could help create a better future for myself and my community. Coming from a low-income background also made me realize how important financial knowledge is. Many families in communities like mine struggle not because they lack determination, but because they lack access to financial education and resources. Seeing these struggles inspired me to pursue a degree in finance. I want to understand how money, investments, and financial systems work so that I can use that knowledge to help others build stability and opportunity in their lives. I am actively working toward my goals by focusing on my education and preparing for a future in finance. Through school and personal study, I am learning the discipline and responsibilities it takes to succeed in a field Building financial knowledge is not only important for my own future, but also for the future of those around me. Many people in my community have the motivation to succeed but may not have access to the financial education needed to make informed decisions. By studying finance, I hope to help bridge that gap. I want to share knowledge about budgeting, saving, investing, and building credit so others can create long-term financial stability. My goal is to use what I learn to empower others, helping individuals and families make smarter financial choices and build stronger, more secure futures for In addition to empowering others, I also plan to continue growing my own financial knowledge by staying informed about investing, credit management, and wealth-building strategies. I understand that financial literacy is not something you learn once, but a lifelong process that requires discipline and consistency. By continuing to educate myself, I can be a reliable source of guidance for others who may not have access to that information. I also want to create spaces where financial conversations feel normal and accessible, especially for young people. Many individuals grow up without ever discussing money openly, which can lead to confusion and poor decision-making later in life. By breaking that cycle, I hope to encourage confidence and awareness when it comes to finances. Whether it’s through mentoring, workshops, or simply sharing knowledge with peers, I want to make financial education something that is approachable and empowering. Ultimately, my goal is to turn knowledge into action. Financial literacy has the power to change lives, and I am committed to using what I learn not just for personal success, but to create lasting impact in the lives of others. themselves and their communities.

Doing Hard Things My Way: Adaptive Athlete Scholarship
Sports have always been a big part of my life. From a young age, I loved the feeling of competition, teamwork, and pushing myself to get better every day. However, being an adaptive athlete has meant that my journey in sports has not always looked the same as everyone else’s. I have had to learn how to face challenges, adjust, and keep pushing forward even when things felt difficult. Through those experiences, I have learned that doing hard things is not about having perfect circumstances, but about having determination and faith to keep going. When I first started playing sports, I realized that I would sometimes have to approach things differently than other athletes. Training, practicing, and competing could come with extra obstacles, and there were moments where frustration or doubt could easily take over. Instead of letting those challenges stop me, I chose to adapt. I learned how to adjust my training, stay focused on improvement, and trust the process. Those moments taught me that growth often comes from the hardest situations. One challenge I faced was learning to stay confident even when progress felt slow. Being an adaptive athlete means that improvement may look different, but that does not make the effort any less meaningful. There were times when I had to remind myself why I started playing sports in the first place: because I love the game and the opportunity to compete. By staying committed and working through setbacks, I developed resilience and mental toughness that go far beyond the field. Being an adaptive athlete means finding your own way to succeed. It means refusing to let limitations define what you can accomplish. Instead, it pushes you to be creative, disciplined, and determined. For me, sports have shaped my mindset by teaching me perseverance, confidence, and leadership. They have also helped me grow as a person by showing me that challenges can build character if you choose to face them head-on. As I move into college, I plan to continue pushing myself both academically and athletically. I want to keep improving, learning, and using my experiences to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. My goal is not only to succeed for myself, but also to show younger athletes that obstacles do not have to stop you from pursuing your goals. Doing hard things my way has taught me that strength is not measured by what you avoid, but by what you overcome. As an adaptive athlete, I will continue to embrace challenges, work hard, and move forward with determination and faith.
Rev. Ethel K. Grinkley Memorial Scholarship
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that the life I was living day to day wasn’t a godly life, even though I never truly claimed Jesus Christ as my Savior. I thought I was just living normally, doing what everyone else around me was doing, but deep down I knew something was missing. I see the same pattern in many young kids today. They follow what they see on social media, what their friends are doing, or what the world says is acceptable, without realizing how far it can pull them away from God. Because of that, my goal is to help those who are going down the wrong path and lead them toward the blood of Jesus. I’ve personally seen a young person choose the wrong direction, and I watched his heart become hardened and filled with darkness. At first, it didn’t seem like a big change. It started small — different attitudes, different influences, different choices. But over time, those small choices became bigger ones. His heart became so damaged that he began to resist the Word of God. Conversations about faith turned into arguments. Invitations to church were ignored. What once may have been curiosity about God turned into rejection. Seeing that happen opened my eyes to how powerful influence can be and how important it is to speak truth early. Even now, I’m still trying to share God’s Word with him and pray that his heart will soften. I’ve learned that you can’t force someone to accept Jesus, but you can be an example. You can show patience, love, and consistency. Sometimes planting a seed is more important than seeing immediate results. I’ve realized that living for Christ isn’t just about what you say — it’s about how you live when no one is watching. Younger kids pay attention to actions more than words. I also understand now that before I can lead others, I have to fully surrender my own life to Christ. It starts with repentance, humility, and truly accepting Jesus as my Savior. You can’t guide someone to a place you’ve never committed to yourself. That realization has pushed me to grow spiritually, read the Bible more, pray more intentionally, and surround myself with people who strengthen my faith. The world today offers so many distractions and temptations, especially for young people. Without guidance, it’s easy for them to drift. That’s why I feel called to step up and be a light. Not in a judgmental way, but in a loving and firm way. I want to help younger kids understand that their identity is not found in popularity, money, or approval from others, but in Christ. My hope is that one day the friend I’ve been praying for will open his heart again. But even if it takes years, I won’t stop trying. Because if God could open my eyes and change my perspective, He can do the same for anyone. And if I can help even one young person choose a better path, then everything I’ve learned will have been worth it.

This question is something that intrigues my intrest, solely due to the fact that I can adequately explain my reasoning.
