Personal Statement
After my senior season of wrestling ended on a disappointing note due to COVID-19, I thought my dream of wrestling in college was slipping away. In a last-minute effort, I contacted my hometown Division One school for a walk-on opportunity. After talking with the coaches and academic advisors, they offered me a position on the team. This started a journey that has molded me into the person I am today. Wrestling has taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and time management to overcome adversity. These traits have driven both my athletic and academic success.
In my freshman year of college, I discovered the challenges of a student athlete. I learned to balance my life to accommodate studying, wrestling, and part-time work. I approached the first year with a determined mindset, striving to do my best. I had to adjust to having practice in the morning, workouts in the afternoon, and classes in between. On my days off from practice, I worked approximately 20 hours a week off campus. Despite those commitments, I have flourished academically with a 3.825 GPA and made the Dean’s List each semester. My schedule has been demanding at times, but it has prepared me for future obstacles.
As a walk-on, I had set realistic goals for myself. My first objective was to start a varsity match. During the first week of competition, I was set to wrestle in a college open tournament with my fellow freshman, but the day before we left, my head coach called me into his office. He told me he needed me to wrestle in the varsity match the next day, but in two weight classes above mine. I embraced the opportunity and pivoted my focus physically and mentally to strategize how I would wrestle a much bigger opponent. Ultimately the match was close, but it did not end to my advantage; however, my participation prevented my team from forfeiting the match and instilled in me the ability to stay focused and determined in complex situations.
I entered college knowing I wanted to serve others but was unsure what career might allow me to use my talents to do this. Both of my parents assist others in their careers with my mom in the medical field and my dad in the political realm. I initially followed my mom’s path and chose to pursue physical therapy. While I enjoyed the coursework in my first two years, I realized that my strengths and interests aligned more with guiding people in a different aspect. I decided to explore the legal field and sought insights from experienced professionals. Through conversations with judges and attorneys, I learned about their journeys and the barriers they conquered to reach their positions, igniting my interest in the legal profession.
I realized I needed the first-hand experience of daily life as an attorney. Mr. Rob Uhorchuk, a local attorney and father of four of my former wrestling teammates, offered me an internship that developed into a part-time position with his law firm. Through my role, I’ve had the opportunity to read through pleadings, file documents, and deliver paperwork to court. This gave me valuable insights into legal work and deepened my interest in the practice of law. One day at the firm, Mr. Uhorchuk invited me to go to court for a docket call where I observed him arguing his stance on a motion. This involvement gave me a rich insight as I observed how he handled the pressures of litigation and communicated with the court. His professionalism in everyday practice and his dedication as a father inspired me to pursue law with the same integrity.
I am devoted to developing my skills, refining understanding of law, and building work ethic. I am eager to apply my experiences and commitment to The University of Tennessee College of Law where I will pursue a meaningful impact in the legal profession.
