My struggle with my academic performance started to be very noticeable when I was in the fourth grade. I had completed reading several books, but I had difficulty with retaining the information and reading comprehension. In my case, I spent time reading, but when it came to answering text-based questions, I struggled to understand the text fully. I could not pass a test about a book no matter how hard I tried. My grades started to slide, and I felt disheartened about my ability to learn like everyone else. When my parents and teachers became aware of my struggles, they helped me to figure out what was hindering me from understanding what I was reading. Through trying out different strategies and eventually being evaluated, I was diagnosed with mild ADHD and dyslexia. Through determination and ability, I bounced back from this setback. My parents, family, and teachers were very supportive and provided me with extra help. They worked together with me to determine what accommodation I needed to be successful. I also started to take a proactive approach to my learning by being more organized, seeking assistance, and using the strategies that we discovered were helpful. I not only had to overcome adversities in the classroom but also while playing sports. I would get frustrated while playing because I thought I was doing what the coach signaled to do but then they would get upset with me. Once we were aware of my disability, my coaches understood me more as an athlete. They then understood why I sometimes would call the wrong pitch when I was catching, tried to steal a base when they didn't want me to, or did not lay down a bunt as a batter. On the football field, I sometimes read the coach's signals backward and ran the wrong route. With their help and my determination, I was able to learn strategies to read signals correctly so I would be able to perform to the best of my abilities. My experience of overcoming adversity has taught me that people with mild ADHD and dyslexia are capable of achieving success despite facing significant hurdles. It was essential to have a supportive environment, which helped me and continues to help me, develop confidence and overcome challenges. I have been able to maintain a high GPA while being a three-sport athlete throughout my four years of high school. I will be attending Belmont Abbey College to Major in Sports Management and play baseball this Fall. In conclusion, through being mild ADHD and dyslexic, I have faced many obstacles and setbacks, which can be disheartening. It has been essential to recognize that seeking help and talking to supportive people is vital to overcoming these obstacles. I appreciate how my family, friends, and teachers have helped me handle this setback and I continue to work toward achieving my goals. My resilience and determination to overcome obstacles are a big part of what has made me who I am today.

Sports were always one of my most significant interests from an early age. I have been a tri-sport athlete throughout my four years of high school. I enjoy participating in the football, basketball, and baseball teams at Cherryville High School. Through my love for sports, I also enjoy mentoring youth by volunteering with local youth sports organizations. I volunteer my time to help with football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring. One of my life goals has always been to continue playing baseball at the college level. I signed my Letter of Intent to play at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC. I plan to pursue a degree in Sports Management with a minor in Digital Sports Media. Another one of my life goals is to become a college coach or a college recruiter. I enjoy participating in teams and motivating others to be their best. Sports have always played a huge role in my life because of the influential people that invested in me as a young kid. I want to extend this blessing and encouragement to the kids who will come after me. I have invested my time towards our Little Ironmen organized football and basketball leagues, a travel baseball team, and our children’s program at Anthony Grove Baptist Church. I must share my love of sports and my love for God with today’s kids so they will always know that there is always someone on their team, rooting for them. I have had the opportunity to coach a 6th-8th grade basketball team, referee basketball games, and work football camps helping kids learn the fundamentals of football for the past two years. I have also helped coach an 11u travel baseball team with a local organization in my hometown. I like being someone they look up to, someone who lets them have fun while still ensuring they understand the rules of the game. One of my favorite things to teach kids about is sportsmanship and how it’s important to show the love of God to others on and off the field whether it’s to our teammates, opponents, coaches, referees, or umpires. Respect and love go a long way in a game and it’s important to keep that mentality when faced with adversity during a game. I believe these things are important to teach kids because it helps them become good athletes and teammates, but it is also a good reminder for me of how to carry myself when it’s my turn to step into the game. I have worked with all age groups of kids and with each age group, I learn something new but the smiles never change. Working with kids through sports has truly changed my life for the better. I can use my love for sports to influence and make a difference in someone else's life. By volunteering with the youth in my community, I have been able to support, teach, love, and grow with different individuals. It has helped broaden the village of people I now have in my corner as well as brought out some of my best attributes. Working with kids and relying on their smiles has been my most humbling experience. I am truly blessed to have been allowed to make an impact in these kids' lives because they have certainly made an impact on mine. A degree in an athletics-related field will allow me to continue to impact others positively through sports.

As a student, inspired by sports movies, I love nothing more than an underdog story. The movie, Facing the Giants, delivers just that. It is a must-watch movie that has had a significant impact on my life. It explores the values of faith, determination, and perseverance. The movie has taught me invaluable lessons that I apply in my life. The movie tells the story of a high school football coach named Grant Taylor. After six consecutive losing seasons, Taylor is struggling to motivate his team, and his job is on the line. But when he meets a man of faith who challenges him to trust in God and face his fears, Taylor undergoes a remarkable transformation. His newfound faith empowers him to motivate his team, who despite being the smallest in the league, go on an unforgettable ride to the state championship. One of the significant takeaways from the movie is the power of prayer. Taylor's transformation was fueled by his unshakable faith in God, which he demonstrated through his prayer life. This part of the movie struck a chord with me because it highlighted the importance of prayer in our daily lives. It taught me that no matter how daunting a situation might seem, I could always turn to God in prayer for guidance and strength. Another key lesson I learned from the movie is that perseverance and determination can conquer any obstacle. Taylor's team was faced with several challenges during their journey to the state championship, but their unwavering determination and commitment to excellence saw them through. This part of the movie resonated with me because it showed that through hard work and determination, any goal is achievable, no matter how impossible it may seem. Furthermore, the values of teamwork and selflessness are also integral themes in this movie. Taylor instills in his team the importance of putting the team first as opposed to individualism. Through this, he teaches them that a team that functions in synergy can accomplish a lot more than a group of individuals. This lesson is something that I apply in my life daily. I have learned that working together with others towards a common goal is more effective than going it alone. In conclusion, Facing the Giants is a movie that has had a significant impact on my life. The movie is a testament that through faith, determination, and perseverance, we can conquer any obstacle that comes our way. It has taught me invaluable lessons that I have applied in my life, both personally and academically. A must-watch for anyone looking for inspiration and motivation, this movie will have a positive impact on your life, just like it did mine.
