When an individual chooses to be involved in their own community, they are not only promoting growth within their community but also in themselves. Life presents challenges and trials that are never expected, or always welcomed, and yet still they come. We live in a world where it is easy to get caught up in “me.” Always looking for the next best thing for ourselves, we tend to ignore others and their needs. It can be difficult to take time to pause so as to become more aware of others and their situations as well as how we can befriend them. Taking notice of these conditions in communities or in individuals helps promote necessary growth. I have had various opportunities to help in my community, especially through the help of other organizations. I have been involved by babysitting, putting in the lawn for the new elementary school, cleaning up the roadside, painting the curbs, making hats for newborns, etc. One of my most significant events though, was finding individuals who most needed help in their lives when they faced so many trials and hardships. Last summer, I was brought to the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission Women’s Shelter, which holds twenty women and three children. Although these numbers appeared somewhat small, I realized that each of these women and children were facing large and in-explainable pain, struggles, and seemingly overwhelming obstacles in each of their individual paths. They needed some of this burden lifted from their shoulders, simply by a message of hope. When starting to tackle this project, I embraced the idea of making little care packages that were personal and of significance to each individual that received the gift bag. This personalized process began with adding a bar of soap to each bag. My sister and I own a soap making business, and I felt that adding soap would be a special way of sharing a personal part of myself with the ladies and children at the shelter. I also felt that it specifically aligned with my platform, taking my soap that I had made myself, and sharing it with those who resided at the women’s shelter. Having the opportunity to travel north with my cross country team, I decided to take advantage of this event, and involve my team in delivering the gifts. When we reached the women’s shelter, my girls’ team helped me unload the box of gift bags from the car, and we walked inside. In the office were two women, and a young boy around the age of six. One of the ladies greeted me and expressed her gratitude for my willingness to reach out to the women and children there. As I placed the gift bags on the table, the young boy ran over to the table beaming and asked which bag would be his. I explained that he would find a bag that was especially for him, with his own bath toy. To the lady at the front desk, I explained my purpose for being there, and which bags were designated for the children or the ladies there. Due to COVID, unfortunately, I was not able to socialize with any of the other ladies or children. I do know that the simple bags that I delivered brought a great joy to the other’s there, just as it did for the little boy that I was able to meet. Looking towards college and starting my career, I aspire to establish a successful business by selling goat milk soap and using this goal to motivate myself academically through my post-secondary schooling. By choosing to aim high academically, I believe that I can make a positive impact in the world through being an active member in society. I have very high expectations for my soap business. When I graduate and can focus on my business, I plan to be very persistent in my efforts to help it grow. I desire to be an entrepreneur and develop this business that I am so passionate about. Bruce Lee once said, "The meaning of life is that it is to be lived." Life and its goals are all dependent of what an individual strives to accomplish and succeed in. There is not one specific definition of the meaning of life; it can only be found and cherished if an individual chooses to do so. I believe that the meaning of life for myself includes taking my skills and my abilities, and maximizing their powers or impact that they can make on both others and myself.
