Title: Bridging Divides Through Understanding
During my time as a student at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, I encountered a situation that challenged my ability to foster understanding between opposing viewpoints. In a class discussion on criminal justice reform, a fellow student made a discriminatory comment that perpetuated stereotypes about marginalized communities. The comment created tension among classmates, and I felt compelled to address the situation to promote a more respectful environment.
Rather than remaining silent or responding with hostility, I approached the student privately after class. I respectfully explained how their words could be hurtful and harmful, emphasizing that understanding different perspectives requires listening and empathy. I shared that dialogue—rather than judgment—can help bridge divides and foster a more inclusive environment. I encouraged them to consider the experiences of those affected by systemic inequality and to reflect on how their words might impact others.
Following this conversation, I suggested creating a small discussion group where students could explore social justice topics in a safe space. I believed that open dialogue could help build understanding and reduce hostility. Over the next few weeks, this group met regularly, and the atmosphere gradually shifted. Students began engaging more thoughtfully and listening more actively. The student who made the initial comment eventually apologized and expressed a desire to learn more about the communities involved.
This experience taught me that conflict can be an opportunity for growth when approached with patience, respect, and a willingness to listen. It reinforced my belief that effective communication and empathy are essential skills for anyone working toward social justice and peacebuilding. I realized that mediating conflicts isn’t merely about resolving disagreements but about creating space for honest dialogue and mutual understanding.
What I learned from this experience is that peacebuilding begins with individual acts of understanding. Small conversations can have a ripple effect, fostering empathy and reducing hostility in larger communities. As someone passionate about social justice and advocacy, I am committed to cultivating these skills wherever I go. Whether through formal mediation or everyday interactions, I believe that creating opportunities for dialogue can help bridge divides and foster lasting change.
This experience also strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in law, where mediating conflicts and advocating for marginalized populations will be central to my work. I understand that justice isn’t just about laws and policies; it’s about building relationships and fostering understanding between diverse groups. I am committed to using my voice and skills to promote dialogue, empathy, and peace in the communities I serve.
In conclusion, this incident taught me that peacebuilding is rooted in understanding and respect. Every effort to listen and empathize can contribute to creating a more inclusive and just society. As I continue my education and future career, I am dedicated to being a mediator—both in words and actions—and to helping others find common ground in pursuit of a more equitable world.

Question 1:
I plan to begin law school in the Fall of 2025. As a freshman at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, I am still early in my academic journey but already preparing for this next step. I have applied to several top law schools, including Harvard, Columbia, and UCLA, because of their strong programs in social justice and criminal law. I’ve received some responses and am waiting to hear from others. I haven’t placed a seat deposit yet, as I want to carefully consider my options and choose the best fit for my future. For now, my focus is on excelling academically, gaining relevant experience, and building a solid foundation for law school. I believe that the experiences I gain now will be crucial in shaping my future as a legal advocate committed to justice.
Question 2:
My short-term goal is to continue excelling at UMSL, studying political science and criminology while engaging in internships and volunteer work. I want to deepen my understanding of the legal system and social issues. Long-term, I aspire to attend law school and become an advocate for social justice, working to reform the criminal justice system and protect civil rights. I want to serve as a public defender or policy advocate to address systemic inequalities like mass incarceration and racial profiling. My ultimate aim is to uplift marginalized communities and ensure justice is accessible to all. I am passionate about creating systemic change and making a real difference through legal work that influences policy or directly helps those in need.
Question 3:
Outside of school, I pursue learning through community activism, reading about social justice issues, and participating in discussions that challenge my perspectives. Volunteering with local organizations focused on criminal justice reform has been especially impactful, giving me insight into disparities faced by marginalized groups. These experiences motivate me to pursue a legal career dedicated to social change. I also stay informed through podcasts, books, and articles that deepen my understanding of systemic issues. This continuous learning fuels my desire to use law as a tool for advocacy, shaping my goal to address injustice at its roots. I believe ongoing education outside the classroom is essential for developing the empathy and knowledge needed to be an effective advocate.
Question 4:
A defining moment was when I challenged a peer’s discriminatory comment during class. Even though I knew I might face backlash, I spoke out because I believed it was right. I explained why such language is harmful, emphasizing respect and understanding. It was difficult, but it reinforced my belief that standing up for justice requires courage. I learned that change begins with uncomfortable conversations, and my voice can make a difference. This experience strengthened my commitment to fight for fairness and equality, even when opposition is strong. It taught me that integrity and resilience are essential qualities for creating meaningful change, and I am determined to carry those lessons forward in my future legal career.
Question 5:
If I had resources to create a philanthropic initiative, I would support programs that provide legal education, mentorship, and advocacy for underserved youth and communities of color. I want to empower young people with knowledge about their rights and how to navigate the justice system, which can be inaccessible for many marginalized populations. My goal is to develop community programs offering workshops, clinics, and mentorship to help youth learn their rights and develop leadership skills. Investing in education and empowerment can break cycles of injustice and foster a new generation committed to social change. I believe providing resources and opportunities for marginalized communities is essential for creating a future where justice and opportunity are accessible to all.

Choosing a career in psychology is a decision rooted in my deep desire to understand human behavior, promote mental well-being, and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. From a young age, I have been fascinated by the complexities of the human mind and the ways in which thoughts, emotions, and experiences influence our actions. This curiosity, combined with my passion for helping others, has driven me to pursue a path in psychology, where I can develop the skills necessary to support individuals facing mental health challenges and contribute to the broader field of mental health care.
My interest in psychology was sparked by personal experiences and observations. I have seen friends and family members struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. These experiences made me realize how vital it is for individuals to have access to compassionate, understanding, and effective mental health support. I also became aware of the stigma surrounding mental health, especially within marginalized communities, which often prevents people from seeking help. This awareness motivated me to pursue psychology as a way to break down barriers, promote awareness, and provide accessible care to those in need.
My future goals in psychology are both professional and personal. I aspire to become a licensed clinical psychologist, specializing in working with underserved populations, including minority communities and young adults. I want to create a safe space where clients feel heard, validated, and empowered to work through their challenges. Additionally, I hope to contribute to research that advances our understanding of mental health disparities and develops culturally sensitive interventions. Ultimately, my goal is to combine clinical practice with advocacy, working to improve mental health services and reduce stigma on a systemic level.
In terms of experience, I have actively sought opportunities to grow my understanding of mental health. I volunteered at a local mental health clinic, where I assisted staff with administrative tasks and provided emotional support to clients during group sessions. This experience taught me the importance of empathy, active listening, and patience when working with individuals facing psychological struggles. I also participated in a peer counseling program at my school, where I learned basic counseling skills, such as effective communication, confidentiality, and crisis intervention. These experiences have strengthened my desire to pursue a career in mental health and have given me practical skills that I can build upon through my education and future work.
Furthermore, I have taken coursework in psychology, sociology, and human development, which has provided me with a solid foundation in understanding human behavior and social influences. I am also committed to ongoing learning, staying informed about the latest research and best practices in mental health care. I believe that my academic background, combined with my hands-on experiences, has prepared me to succeed in this field and to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
In conclusion, my passion for understanding the human mind, coupled with my desire to help others overcome mental health challenges, has led me to pursue a career in psychology. My future goals include becoming a licensed clinical psychologist, advocating for mental health equity, and continuously expanding my knowledge and skills. Through my experiences and dedication, I am committed to making a difference—one person at a time—and contributing to a healthier, more understanding society.

Growing up, I have personally witnessed the devastating effects of domestic violence and substance abuse within my community and family. These experiences have left an indelible mark on my understanding of the profound and far-reaching impact these issues have on individuals, families, and communities. I have seen how domestic violence can erode self-esteem, create cycles of trauma, and hinder access to resources, while substance abuse often exacerbates these problems, leading to increased vulnerability and despair. These observations have fueled my passion to pursue higher education, not only to empower myself with knowledge but to become a catalyst for meaningful change in the lives of those affected, particularly African American women who are disproportionately impacted by these issues.
My personal encounters with domestic violence and substance abuse have shown me the importance of compassionate, culturally competent care. I have observed that African American women often face unique barriers to accessing support, including systemic racism, economic disparities, and social stigmas. These barriers can prevent them from seeking help or receiving adequate care, perpetuating cycles of trauma and marginalization. I am committed to using my higher education to bridge these gaps by gaining advanced knowledge in social work, public health, or a related field, with a focus on culturally responsive practices. I aim to develop skills that will enable me to advocate effectively for these women, ensuring they receive the care, support, and resources they deserve.
Furthermore, I believe that effective care requires strong coordination and communication among health care providers, social services, and community organizations. My goal is to become a professional who can facilitate collaboration across these sectors, developing integrated programs that address the complex needs of women impacted by domestic violence and substance abuse. This includes designing outreach initiatives that are culturally sensitive and accessible, as well as training providers to recognize and respond appropriately to the unique challenges faced by African American women. By fostering better communication channels and collaborative networks, I hope to improve outcomes and create a more supportive environment for healing and recovery.
In addition to direct service, I am interested in using my education to influence policy change. Systemic reforms are essential for creating sustainable improvements in care and access. I plan to engage in research that highlights the disparities faced by African American women and advocate for policies that promote equitable funding, culturally competent training for providers, and community-based interventions. Education will empower me to contribute to these efforts, ensuring that systemic barriers are addressed and that vulnerable women are prioritized in health and social service systems.
Ultimately, my personal experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a desire to make a difference. I recognize that higher education is a powerful tool that can equip me with the knowledge, skills, and credibility needed to advocate for change. By focusing on culturally responsive care, fostering collaboration, and influencing policy, I aspire to improve the outcomes for African American women affected by domestic violence and substance abuse. My goal is to create a future where these women are met with understanding, support, and opportunities for healing, breaking the cycles of trauma and building stronger, healthier communities.

One legal case that profoundly changed my perspective on the world is the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954). This case not only reshaped American legal standards regarding racial segregation but also deepened my understanding of the importance of justice, equality, and the ongoing struggle against systemic discrimination.
Before learning about Brown v. Board, I held a somewhat naive view that the United States had largely addressed issues of racial inequality through legislation and social progress. I believed that laws had effectively eradicated segregation and discrimination. However, studying this case revealed the deep-rooted injustices that persisted even after the formal end of legalized segregation. The case challenged me to think critically about the difference between legal equality and real-world equality, highlighting how laws alone are insufficient to eliminate societal prejudices and disparities.
Brown v. Board originated when several African American children, along with their families, challenged the legality of racial segregation in public schools. They argued that "separate but equal" facilities, established by the 1896 Supreme Court decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, were inherently unequal and violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The case was a consolidation of several lawsuits from different states, all alleging that segregated schools created psychological and educational disadvantages for Black children. The case gained national attention because it symbolized the broader struggle for civil rights and social justice.
The Supreme Court's unanimous decision in favor of the plaintiffs was groundbreaking. Chief Justice Earl Warren declared that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal," and therefore, racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. This ruling invalidated the legal basis for segregation and became a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. It demonstrated that legal principles could be used as powerful tools to challenge injustice and promote societal change.
Learning about Brown v. Board changed my perspective in several ways. First, it made me realize that progress often requires courageous legal challenges that confront deeply ingrained societal norms. The case showed that laws, while crucial, are only part of the broader fight for equity and human dignity. Second, it emphasized the importance of perseverance and moral conviction in the pursuit of justice. The courageous plaintiffs and their legal team risked personal safety and faced immense opposition, yet their efforts ultimately led to meaningful change.
Most importantly, the case taught me that the fight for justice is ongoing. Although Brown v. Board was a significant victory, racial inequalities persist in various forms today. The case inspired me to see the law as a tool for advocacy and reform, but also as a reflection of society’s values and commitments. It underscored the importance of remaining vigilant and active in promoting fairness and equality.
In conclusion, Brown v. Board expanded my understanding of the power of law to challenge injustice and transform society. It reinforced the idea that legal victories are often the beginning of a longer journey toward true equality. This case has motivated me to appreciate the ongoing efforts required to build a more just and inclusive world, recognizing that the pursuit of fairness is a collective responsibility that transcends legal rulings alone.

WinnerMy name is Lamiyah Martin, and I am a senior at Pattonville High School in Maryland Heights, Missouri. I am thrilled to share that I will be continuing my education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) this fall, where I will major in Political Science. As I stand at the cusp of this significant transition, I am filled with a sense of purpose and determination. I am eager to delve into the world of political science, not just as an academic pursuit but as a means to impact society positively. This essay aims to provide insight into my background, my aspirations, and the profound significance of this scholarship in my journey. My journey thus far has been shaped by a combination of personal experiences, family values, and community involvement. Growing up in a culturally diverse neighborhood, I was exposed to a multitude of perspectives and experiences that have significantly broadened my worldview. My mother, an ardent believer in the power of education and civic responsibility, has been my pillar of support. She has always encouraged me to pursue my passions and to never shy away from challenges. Throughout my high school years, I have been actively involved in a second school called North County Tech where I earned my cosmetology license which has allowed me to develop my leadership and communication skills. My involvement in the debate club honed my analytical and public speaking skills, teaching me the importance of constructing logical arguments and considering multiple viewpoints. Additionally, my volunteer work with local non-profits has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to community service. Choosing UMSL for my higher education was a decision driven by several factors. UMSL's Political Science program is renowned for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on practical experience. The university's commitment to community engagement and social justice aligns perfectly with my own values and aspirations. I am particularly excited about the opportunities to participate in internships, research projects, and community service initiatives that UMSL offers. My decision to major in Political Science stems from my desire to understand the complexities of governance, policy-making, and international relations. I am fascinated by the ways in which political systems operate and how they can be reformed to promote social justice and equality. My academic goals include deepening my knowledge of political theory, enhancing my research skills, and gaining practical experience through internships and community engagement. I aspire to pursue a career in public service, where I can contribute to shaping policies that address systemic inequalities and improve the lives of marginalized communities. My passion for political science is driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact on the world. I believe that understanding the intricacies of political systems is crucial for advocating for effective policies that promote social justice and equality. Throughout my life, I have witnessed the profound impact that policies can have on individuals and communities. This has fueled my determination to work towards creating a more just and equitable society. One of my primary goals is to advocate for criminal justice reform. I am deeply troubled by the systemic injustices that plague our criminal justice system, particularly the disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. I plan to use my education to research and advocate for policies that address these issues, such as ending mass incarceration, promoting restorative justice practices, and ensuring equitable access to legal representation. In addition to criminal justice reform, I am passionate about issues such as affordable healthcare and educational equity. I believe that access to quality healthcare and education is a fundamental human right, and I am committed to advocating for policies that ensure these rights are accessible to all. During my time at UMSL, I plan to engage in initiatives that address these issues, whether through research, community service, or advocacy work. For me, attending college is not just an opportunity to gain knowledge; it is a chance to grow as an individual and contribute to a greater cause. Higher education represents the key to unlocking my potential and achieving my dreams. It is a pathway to acquiring the skills and expertise needed to tackle complex societal issues. College will provide me with the platform to engage with diverse perspectives, challenge my assumptions, and develop innovative solutions to pressing problems. Moreover, college is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. It is an opportunity to explore my interests, develop my talents, and build lasting relationships with peers and mentors. I am eager to immerse myself in the academic and social environment at UMSL, where I can learn from and collaborate with individuals who share my passion for social justice and community engagement. While I am determined to pursue my educational goals, I face significant financial challenges. My family has always worked hard to provide for me, but the cost of college tuition, books, and living expenses presents a substantial burden. This scholarship would not only alleviate the financial strain on my family but also allow me to focus on my studies and extracurricular activities without the constant worry of financial instability. Receiving this scholarship would have a profound impact
