Greetings! My name is LaJuana Powell. Born and raised in East Oakland, CA, I always loved school and looked forward to the first day. I went to catholic school for 13 years due to the vision and sacrifices made by my parents. I am the oldest of 6 siblings, 4 girls and 2 boys. I last attended college in 1992, but did not complete my degree. I got married, had a baby, and began working. I started as an Accounting Assistant and found my love for that field. However, after the divorce and relocating, I accepted the first temporary assignment I received which was with AT&T. That is when my IT Professional career began. Since then (1999), I have been promoted, transferred, I started with another company. That company I’ve been with for 10 years now. But IT has moved on without me and now I’m stagnant in my job. I never forgot how happy Accounting made me, but I had to make a living for me and my daughter. After being out of school since 1992, I decided to enroll and start taking courses at Butte College to attain my AS degree in Accounting. I should finish by end of spring 2023 and I am also going for the Certificate of Achievement in Accounting at the same time. My daughter had a big hand in that decision and I hope to make her proud. I plan to transfer to Chico State to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. I am also very active in my community and believe that those watching, may be inspired as well. I am very active in my church. I had also volunteered as Secretary and Political Action Chair for the local NAACP unit, where my mother was president for many years. Unfortunately, I had to borrow money for books, and things I need to go to school. Federal funding states that I should have more disposable income and I do not. My financial need exceeds what I can pay. I, like some others, have little left after financial responsibilities, even though I work. I have a full time job, but that income goes out to expenses and I’m overextended. I have an empty nest now and it’s now my time. It took some time and soul searching to not feel guilty about that. I am so close to my educational dream. I am not seeking this award to make my life easier. I am seeking this award to make my life possible. I thank you for your time and consideration.

Overcoming the Impact of Alcoholism and Addiction
I agree with the statement. However, my personal life story, I do not. My father, Henry Jordan, Sr. is a vietnam war vet. He is currently addicted to alcohol. I suppose he could have turned down drinks when he was a mere teenager in Vietnam... But hearing him recount what his life was like from the draft in 1969 until now, 2022, maybe he couldn't not drink. He discussed how many tried to dodge the draft and some were successful and others not. In his early twenties, he was looking forward to his life as an adult, previously being a record breaking track and football star in rural Ceres, CA. He described the minimal preparation and the flight to Vietnam. My dad described some horrific things they did to villages, including women and children. When he came home from the war, he was addicted to alcohol, cigarettes, and unbeknownst at that very time, infected from Agent Orange. He recounted how hard it was to adjust to a new country, language, food, culture in general. After discharge, he met and married my mother and relocated to the Bay Area and was a hard worker. Today, in 2022, 53 years later, my Dad suffers from alcoholism, lupus, addiction to cigarettes, liver hepatitis, multiple physical issues, and PTSD. There have been occasions where he reacted to ceiling fans, and gunshots on TV. He has nightmares multiple times a week, where you can hear him verbally making machine gun and bomb sounds. My parents have separate bedrooms for many many years due to the violent outbursts during the night. These episodes seemed to get worse and more pronounced when he had to submit paperwork for his disability rating. As the eldest child, I prepared them for him. On one form in particular, he had to recount how his squad destroyed the homes of villages of people that didn’t do anything to him. He knew on that day, he shouldn’t be there. So, I do not think there is one answer to this statement. At least not from my family's point of view. He's still with us, but there's not a day I do not grieve for my Daddy.

I started as an Accounting Assistant and found my love for that field. However, after the divorce and relocating, I accepted the first temporary assignment I received which was with AT&T. That is when my IT Professional career began. I noticed that I was one of the few black women in that field, not just at my location. It made me step outside of who I was in order to make sure I wasn't targeted. Meaning, I made sure my hair didn't get in the way. I made sure my fingernails were short. I was blessed to have my mother watch my child. All of this, and more, so that I wouldn't be labeled a "frilly girl" that couldn't do the job. That's when I knew that changes would have to made. We needed to get more girls and girls of color interested in IT. Since then (1999), I have been promoted, transferred, I started with another company. That company I’ve been with for 10 years now. But IT has moved on without me and now I’m stagnant in my job. I never forgot how happy Accounting made me, but I had to make a living for me and my daughter. Bold Career Goals Scholarship
Greetings! My name is LaJuana Powell. I made the decision to go back to school and major in Accounting within the last few months.
