According to Google, the definition of school is an ¨institution for educating children¨. For many kids my age, high school is little more than a place they spend five days a week with no more thought to it than what they’re learning that day, what projects they have coming up, and what extracurriculars they have afterward. For some, however, it's an escape from an unfortunate household or a place they seek to avoid issues outside of school. Others dread waking up early in the morning. For me, school became my safe space. Somewhere I could always be myself, and not worry about life's stresses. Children learn from others and they have to have a role model. My role model was Mr. Johnson. Now don't get me wrong, I have a good home life. Two parents at home who love me, a roof over my head, and a supportive backbone, but everyone has their struggles. My struggle was that I was starting to lose my love for music. My dad's side of the family is very musically talented, so obviously at a young age, I started loving it as well. I began chorus in elementary school and did it every year up to middle school. In middle school is when I started struggling. I did not have a good teacher and started dreading going to class. I did not enjoy learning or singing music anymore, which is something I had always leaned on. Then I got to high school. In our first semester, everyone from my middle school class was joining Mr. Johnson's beginner's chorus and being easily influenced I followed. Mr. Johnson immediately became like a second father to me. He was young and funny and showed so much love for his students. He pulled me out of a hole I hadn't even known I had fallen into. I found my voice again. In my sophomore year, I auditioned for Johnson's Honors Chorus and got accepted. This Honors Chorus became my home. I met the most amazing people I have ever met and I formed friendships that will never be forgotten. I am still a part of the Honors Chorus and continue to love it every single day. That is a good teacher. Someone who can turn your life around for the better. Someone who helps you find your love again. Mr. Johnson is who I inspire to be. A teacher whose students know they can come to them about anything. A classroom students feel they belong in. A home for students who may not have one. I will be the difference between a teacher whose students breeze through their class and one that makes a difference in someone's life. Not only will my students be taught the curriculum but they will know that they matter and that they are important. I will be the change, just like Mr. Johnson was for me.

I will use this scholarship to focus on my education at Appalachian State University. Right now im in a sticky situation and have not gotten much financial aid. My dream is to become an incredible teacher, but to do that I have to get a higher education. I want to pursue this dream and come out with as less debt as possible. Thank you for considering me as a canidate!
