Bio

My name is Laila, and I’m honored to be starting my college journey through the Clemson Bridge Program. The past few years have been challenging—I completed high school from home due to an autoimmune illness that affected both my health and daily life. While it wasn’t the path I expected, it gave me a deeper understanding of resilience, empathy, and the importance of support during difficult times. Now, as I step into this next chapter, I’m excited to finally experience campus life, work toward healing, and focus on becoming the healthiest version of myself. More importantly, I’m passionate about turning my experience into purpose. My goal is to earn a degree that allows me to support and advocate for children facing similar health challenges. I am truly grateful for any scholarship support—it would not only ease the financial burden but also help me pursue this journey with full focus and heart. Thank you for considering me.

I grew up loving academics, I worked hard to always have the best grades in class. I studied and read books daily to keep my mind sharp. Unfortunately When I was in middle school I was diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses. My illness kept me out of school for the remainder of middle and all of high school. My love for reading turned to resentment and I feared that I may never enjoy anything educational again. However, During these years I spent a lot of time with doctors and in hospitals, This began to shape my new found interest in science. I watched as the doctors worked diligently on my problems, but were never able to find an exact solution: it spiked my imagination on what I might be able to accomplish if I were to pursue a career in medicine . Since hyperthyroidism is a rare illness that has no cure, there has not been much research done on it but I believe if I spend my time studying and understanding this sickness I may be able to find a more invasive treatment than a simple hormone pill. Though this disease affects one's physical being dramatically it has a major impact on mental health,That is not seen or treated by most thyroid specialists. When i become a doctor I intend to treat not only my patients physical pain but also take into account how this is affecting them mentally. Hyperthyroidism is a revolting illness that causes an individual's thyroid to produce too many hormones, causing that person to go through irregular changes. An overactive thyroid though not a life threatening illness can still be deadly if not treated correctly. A thyroid storm is when your already irregular thyroid becomes extremely stressed and unable to function, causing your body to shut down and most likely result in a heart attack. This can be caused as something as simple as not taking your medicine or having an untreated infection. You would assume this would be something extremely pushed to be cautious about by thyroid specialists, however it is uncommonly talked about and I myself was not aware of it until my fourth year of having this disease. I would like to raise awareness of all of the obstacles that are not talked about, that comes with having this ugly disease. I am pursuing this career in hope that I may be able to help other young women face this illness with confidence, knowing that their doctor has a deeper understanding of what they are experiencing .
