I had always known I had wanted to be a teacher, from playing school with my big brother to then asking for a dry erase board for Christmas so I could “upgrade” my classroom. Teaching was always part of me. But I had never thought of becoming a Special Education teacher. But it was my eighth grade year that changed everything for me. I was chosen to be a “Big” Buddy for the kids in our Special Education class. Little did I know that something that would be so simple would become such a big and impactful part of my life. What was supposed to be me going to the classroom once a week turned into me going every day, going on field trips with them, helping with the Special Olympics, and now visiting that exact classroom to help out five years later. But it was not just the kids that sparked my passion but also the teacher. I have not once seen her without a smile on her face and a joyous spirit. She loves what she does and she inspires so many people, including me. I can only hope to be half the teacher that she is one day.
Fast forward to my sophomore year of college, I signed up to be a Peer Mentor for NC State's first inclusive program called “Elevate.” This program provides students with “intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to get a person-centered campus experience.” This program let me know that I am in the right place. Being able to eat lunch, go to the gym, and just hang out showed me that my heart belongs in Special Education. Being not only their mentor but their friend has been so rewarding and I hope I can make them proud. They are going to do big things in this world, and I can’t wait to see.
I aspire to share my passion for the education system by becoming a Special Education teacher and to guide more students to fall in love with the power of learning and curiosity. And as I continue on my journey to complete my dream, I carry with me the lessons and love that these students and mentors have given me. I want my classroom to be a place where all students feel seen, loved, and supported. In a world that does not always embrace individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, I want my classroom to be a place where they know that they are not only included but celebrated as well!
