I am writing to pursue a college degree and ultimately a career in accounting. While over the summer I gained some experience in a number of accounting fields, this experience has made me aware that accounting really is a field I can imagine myself pursuing as my career because accounting is so practical and useful in the real world, it requires work with numbers, and most importantly, while it was hard to realize at first because I knew little of accounting's place and what an accountant's role entails, it is an essential part of practically any organization. Working with my mother, I gained experience with a variety of types of accounting procedures; I had to determine the proper price for school supplies for various functions, make an organized list of what was spent on food, keep records of purchase invoices for computer equipment and other various items, and confirm the calculations for totals were correct. I assisted her in looking for errors in addition and subtracting, and made sure that the amount listed in the records was consistent with the receipts and the purchases. Although some parts of the work were challenging and I did not have any previous idea of how to do them, I was able to learn it through questioning and practicing a number of steps at a time and have confidence in doing them at this time. It made me enjoy tasks which required being attentive to detail, careful, and patient and looking over everything twice or thrice for the job to be accurate. One very prominent aspect that caught my eye was the function accounting played behind all actions carried out by any business or program. Every business, school, nonprofit or small program has accounting records of some sort for organizational purposes and keeping records of money, the decisions to be made on budgets, and overall how to keep the operation of the business going well. It seems as though it would be difficult for a business or program to operate without a detailed record of how the money they had received is being spent and used. After gaining some exposure in accounting due to my mother, I realized it was not merely about working with numbers, but also about taking responsibility, staying organized, solving issues and working for others' decision making needs. It entails work to be correct, dependable, reliable and consistent-a way in which I want to keep developing myself. It entails looking at things twice so there are no simple mistakes, which will only lead to bigger complications. Thus, accounting is what I feel I can continue with as a career that holds logic, precision, and usefulness all in one. I would like to continue my college education pursuing a degree in accounting so that I may build the skills necessary to work and be useful in the real world while gaining further knowledge in the ways of financial management.
