Hello, I'm Kylie, and I'm incredibly grateful to share my journey at Sayville High School, where I've had the privilege of exploring my passions in academics and sports. Academically, I've had the chance to delve into the world of scientific inquiry, particularly in my research on "Algal Bioplastic as a Single-Use Can Packaging Alternative." It's an honor to be recognized with a nomination to the New York State Science Congress. While academic achievements have their place, my heart truly lies in community service and sustainability. Leading initiatives as the President of Athletes Helping Others and the Vice President of Students Working to Enhance Environmental Protection (SWEEP) has been both a privilege and a humbling experience. Together with my incredible peers, we've strived to make a positive impact on the world. In the world of sports, particularly tennis, I've experienced the transformative power of teamwork and dedication. Over six years of varsity tennis, I've learned that success is a collective effort, and leadership is about guiding the team towards a common goal. Achieving a place in the Top 16 during the 2023 All-State Tennis Championships was an incredible journey, one that taught me the value of resilience and perseverance.     Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
    Six-pack plastic rings. A staple of beach barbeques and an innovative idea. Yet for our environment, the repercussions are serious. Six-pack rings easily trap birds, fish, and marine mammals, leading to injury, impaired movement, and death. Additionally, animals can mistake these rings for food, leading to ingestion and potential starvation. Despite efforts to address plastic pollution with biodegradable alternatives, these solutions have fallen short, remaining costly and still resulting in wildlife entanglement fatalities. To combat this issue, innovative research in STEM fields is imperative and one that I have spent countless hours tackling in the research lab at my high school. Upon earning admission to a selective, independent research program in engineering, I began my quest for a solution to plastic waste. My work entailed collecting Bladderwrack seaweed from the Port Jefferson Harbor, developing 3D-printed designs for a six-pack ring mold, and experimenting with various bioplastic combinations. Challenges such as materials’ fragility or non-biodegradability were daunting, but after two years I created a viable prototype of an agar-based bioplastic sheet. Seaweed's natural polysaccharides give it properties that make it a promising material for a plastic alternative due to its abundance and existing applications in various industries. Its abundance due to rising ocean temperature means that the production of bioplastics can be scaled up without depleting finite resources or contributing to environmental degradation as the current polyethylene-based plastics do now on our oil supply. By engineering bioplastic from seaweed, we can reduce reliance on single-use plastics while mitigating the adverse effects of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems. Seaweed bioplastics will break down naturally over time, and as a result, will not contribute to current plastic contamination in the environment. The synthesis of agar-based bioplastics, utilizing a simple mixture of agar, glycerin, and water, allows for the creation of a flexible and durable material comparable to traditional polyethylene-based plastics. I have conducted rigorous testing regimes that have evaluated the mechanical properties and biodegradability of these bioplastics, to ensure they meet the necessary standards for widespread adoption. Research in this field will contribute to helping address the larger societal problem of plastic pollution by providing an environmentally friendly alternative that protects marine ecosystems. Using STEM, we can pioneer sustainable solutions that will protect the environment, secure the well-being of future generations, and foster a more eco-friendly world for all.

    There’s a picture hanging in my hallway that all my friends find hysterical: me at age five, holding a pink softball bat, ready for my first Little League game. What started as just a game became much more. Softball is often called a game of failure. Batting over .300 is considered good, yet it means you succeed only three out of ten times. Initially, this is a frustrating concept—no one wants to fail seventy percent of the time. However, softball taught me that failure isn't always negative; it can be a stepping stone to success. In high school varsity softball, my coach emphasized that your first at-bat is to understand the pitcher's throws, and the second is to adjust and succeed. This lesson extends beyond the batter’s box: failure is inevitable in life, but those who use it to their advantage are the most successful. Softball taught me that failure is not just acceptable but necessary. The lessons I learned from softball have carried into my academic life. Balancing strong academics, competitive sports, and community service is challenging, especially for someone who strives for perfection. Softball taught me that not everything will go as planned but that these setbacks can lead to greater success. A bad at-bat can lead to a home run the next time. Failing a quiz can motivate harder studying, resulting in a high score on the exam. Softball instilled in me the importance of trusting the process. As Babe Ruth said, “Every strikeout brings me closer to my next home run.” I will take these lessons with me as I attend the University of Notre Dame to study Environmental Engineering and Corporate Business. The discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking I developed on the softball field will help me navigate college academics and campus life. I plan to use the principles of learning from failure, adjusting strategies, and trusting the process to excel in my studies and contribute positively to the university community. Ultimately, softball taught me to see failure as an opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for future success. This mindset will guide me through college. I am committed to becoming a “Force for Good,” applying softball’s lessons to impact my academic pursuits and future career positively.     Growing up on Long Island, NY, the beach wasn't just a backdrop for my childhood; it was a classroom that taught me about the beauty and fragility of our marine ecosystem. At thirteen, witnessing a seagull trapped by a plastic six-pack ring on the Montauk shore transformed my casual interest in the environment into a determined quest for solutions. Plastic pollution presents a monumental challenge due to its widespread use, non-biodegradable properties, and lasting impact on ecosystems. Since 2017, over 500,000 pieces of debris have been cleared from Long Island Sound alone, highlighting the pervasive issue. These plastics persist in water, soil, and air, endangering marine life and human health. Microplastics, described as a "plastic soup" in oceans, pose a significant threat, with estimates ranging from 15 to 50 trillion pieces. These particles enter the food chain, accumulating in seafood and ultimately affecting human health, potentially leading to chronic conditions like reproductive issues and hormonal imbalances. But that’s just the beginning. It will require collaboration from all of us. We need to continue our local beach clean-ups to help fight the pollution that is already tormenting our environment. We need to bring awareness and guidelines so everyone knows how their choices affect our society. We need to fight for the implementation of regulations in the governmental legislature that mandate the use of biodegradable materials in certain products, specifically those with a high likelihood of entering the environment, such as packaging or other single-use items. It’s up to us, to make the best choices for not only ourselves but for our earth; the place we call home.
    Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship
    From my first day of high school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do before I graduated: make a difference. I can remember going up to the club fair tables, each one with their president standing behind their advertisements clamoring to each one of us trying to grab our attention long enough so we would sign up for their clubs. I put my name on every list that first day and got involved in as much as I could. But by the end of that first year, one club stood out to me in particular: Athlete’s Helping Others. It was a club for kids like me, student-athletes, finding opportunities for them to give back to their communities despite having extremely limited time with their academic/athletic commitments. After participating in events such as the Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics, Every Child’s Dream, Integrated Athletics, Unified Basketball, and even getting to volunteer at the Special Olympics themselves; I realized that this is what I wanted to dedicate my high school career to. In the following school year, I was elected to the club’s board and voiced my opinion about a new event idea. The event would become known as the Sports Swap, our communities very own athletic equipment exchange. In it, community members would drop off any lightly used sports or fitness equipment they were no longer in need of, and after collection and cleaning, we would invite anyone to come find equipment that they may have a use for or couldn’t afford otherwise. After the event, all the leftover equipment would be donated to those in need. The event was a massive success pulling in and redistributing 200 pieces of equipment in its first year. We even shipped off lacrosse equipment with an activist for the children in an underserved community in Guam! The event continues to their day and as I finish my senior year, our club celebrates its third-annual Sports Swap Success with over 750 pieces of equipment redistributed and repurposed. You never quite forget the feeling of getting to help younger members of your community look through the piles of equipment and see their faces light up when they find a new helmet or racket. Watching my own equipment be repurposed was even more fulfilling as I handed off my first softball bat to a small girl no more than six years old. I saw the possibility of her future athletic career, knowing that this equipment would give her a chance to experience the same love for the sport I felt and the opportunity to make countless memories that she’ll carry with her for the rest of her life.

    There’s this one picture in my house which my friends think is hysterical. It's a picture of me, no more than three; holding a pink tennis racket, wearing bright blue crocs and a beaming smile on my face that stretches from ear to ear. I’ve played sports for as long as I can remember. They're part of who I am. Balancing a life of sports and academics. My experiences, from the competitive courts of varsity tennis to leading environmental initiatives, have molded me into an individual who thrives on challenge, community service, and teamwork, laying the foundation for my future endeavors. My athletic journey, starting as a seventh grader on the varsity tennis team, taught me resilience, leadership, and the importance of team chemistry. The initial hurdles of competing with older, more experienced players evolved into opportunities for growth, culminating in three consecutive undefeated league team championships as captain and an individual top-16 placement in the 2023 New York State High School Tennis Championships. These accomplishments were not just triumphs of skill but milestones in developing a spirit within me of the learned power of unity and perseverance. Parallel to my athletic achievements, my academic pursuits at Sayville High School were equally driven by a passion for making a tangible impact on the world. When I was a little girl, I found a sea turtle with a plastic six-pack can holder around its neck. From that moment on, my passion for environmental conservation took root. The allure of protecting our planet for wildlife and future generations became my driving force. Imagine the ability to take a design idea for an algae bioplastic product and swiftly transform it into a tangible prototype. With 3D printing, this vision becomes reality. Consider my project involving an algae bioplastic-based alternative to single-use can packaging. Through the power of 3D printing, I was able to swiftly prototype various designs, experimenting with shapes, sizes, and structural integrity. This rapid iteration allowed me to fine-tune my concept efficiently and cost-effectively. In a matter of hours, a digital design evolved into a physical prototype that I could evaluate and improve. This combination of 3D printing and algae bioplastics can have a profound impact on our environment and help increase the pace of sustainable innovation. It can accelerate the development of eco-friendly solutions, propelling us closer to a world free from plastic pollution. And with the increasing accessibility of 3D printing technology, this technology is quickly becoming more available.

    Why am I passionate about my sport? Tennis has woven itself into my life in ways I never expected. My name is Kylie Person and the journey of being a tennis player and instructor has shaped my passion profoundly. To help explain what sports have taught me, I want to talk about a pivotal moment when a parent asked me to her her daughter improve at tennis, but was that the real reason? In the summer before my freshman year of high school, I took on a role that would redefine my perspective on tennis. A mom from a tennis camp I ran sought my assistance to provide private tennis lessons for her daughter, Olivia, a request that would eventually lead me to create my own small coaching business at fourteen. Little did I know that this decision would teach me invaluable lessons about connecting with others and nurturing their growth. At our first lesson, Olivia revealed that she had never held a tennis racket before. In the beginning, progress was slow, and despite my efforts to engage her in conversation, she remained quiet. Around the sixth week, a challenging day left me visibly drained during our lesson. Surprisingly, Olivia noticed and asked if I was okay. That simple question turned into a heartfelt conversation that unveiled her struggles, thoughts, and experiences. After the lesson was over, her mother came up to me which I thought was to thank me as usual but instead, she sent Olivia to the car and came up to me separately. “I want to thank you for what you’ve done for Olivia” she said to me. “Oh of course.” I said, “She’s gotten so much better on the court this week.” “Not for that” she replied. “I meant, thank you for being a role model to her and bringing her smile out. I noticed it at home. She’s gained so much confidence in herself recently and she engages so much; it’s like she’s finally comfortable in her own skin. It’s quite beautiful to see actually.” She thanked me again and confirmed with me about our lesson next week before getting in her car. After they drove off, I stood there for a moment processing what the girl’s mother had said to me. Olivia's story spoke volumes about the power of connection. As I shared my own stories and struggles, she began to open up. I realized that being a tennis instructor wasn't solely about teaching strokes; it was about creating a safe haven for young minds to express themselves. Olivia's transformation from a quiet beginner to a confident player mirrored her personal growth, and witnessing this process became my greatest reward. While I started teaching tennis lessons to help younger kids get into the sport, I hadn’t realized how big of an impact I would have on these kids' lives. It was never about what I taught them on the tennis court. It was more about how being myself with these kids inspired them to become their best selves. Sharing stories of the times that I messed up on a quiz, accidentally hit a tennis ball through my garage window, or even when I fell up the stairs walking to class two days ago; made my students comfortable around me so that they could open up and be themselves. It wasn’t about being a coach for them. It was about being a person.

As we step out from the recent global pandemic into a world still echoing with frustration and a politically charged atmosphere, "Wonder" challenges us to pause, reflect, and embrace our shared humanity. We meet Auggie, a young boy with a facial difference and through reading this book and seeing the world with his eyes I was immersed in the ecosystem of someone whose appearance set him apart. When I was in 5th grade, life led us to a different school and neighborhood, urging me to engage with new faces and rebuild my circle of friends. Down 5-0 in the match and facing a 40-Love deficit in the sixth game, the odds just didn't seem in my favor. In fact, my dad told me that he had already packed his chair and was about to leave. However, I knew that giving up was not an option; instead, I embraced the power of positive thinking and took the match one point at a time. The pressure was obviously high, and a notion of doubt tried to creep into my mind here and there, but I reminded myself of the countless hours of practice and the hard work I had put in to reach this point. Instead of dwelling on the score or the situation, I focused on the present moment, taking each point as a fresh opportunity to turn things around. As I won one point after another, my confidence began to grow, and I realized that a comeback was within reach. Maintaining my positive attitude and unwavering focus, I continued to execute each shot with precision and determination. With every point won, I felt a surge of energy and belief in myself. As the score narrowed, I could see opponent's composure begin to unwind. My "never-give-up" attitude and desire to push forward clearly rattled them, while it fueled my desire for victory. Finally, after a series of intense rallies, I clinched the match with a 7-5 victory, completing a remarkable turnaround. The experience taught me the importance of staying positive in the face of adversity and trusting in my abilities, even in the most challenging moments. The lesson I learned that day extended beyond the tennis court. I realized that in life, we often encounter hurdles and setbacks, and our ability to stay positive and maintain our focus can make all the difference in achieving our goals.     During my sophomore year of high school, I was part of the varsity tennis team, and we were facing a tough match against our biggest rival. The match was intense, and our team was struggling to stay focused and motivated, especially after losing the first two sets. As one of the team captains, I felt a sense of responsibility to uplift my teammates and keep their spirits high. During a break between sets, I called the team together and delivered a pep talk. I reminded them of all the hard work and dedication we had put into our training and how much we had achieved together as a team. I shared a personal story of my own journey in tennis, starting from the age of 4 when my mom introduced me to the sport. I told them about the times I faced setbacks, injuries, and moments of doubt including how when I was down 5-0, 40-Love, and came back to win 7-5. I emphasized the importance of supporting each other and staying positive, regardless of the outcome of the match. As the match continued, I led by example on the court, giving my all in every point and encouraging my teammates to do the same. I noticed that my positive attitude and encouragement were rubbing off on the rest of the team. They began to play with renewed energy and confidence. In the end, we managed to turn the match around, winning the next three sets and securing a thrilling victory. In fact, that entire season, we went undefeated! The atmosphere was electrifying, and the entire team celebrated with joy and camaraderie. Reflecting on that experience, I got to appreciate the essence of leadership in tennis and perhaps in life. My mom was a college tennis player herself and introduced me to the sport. From the very beginning, I fell in love with playing tennis. As a young tennis player, my mom would take me to Eastern Athletics, a tennis camp where I met some of my lifelong friends. My friends have been an instrumental part of my life and my tennis team and highs school have created a supportive community that has kept me engaged in athletics and academics. Tennis became more than just a sport; it became a source of focus and motivation in both my studies and athletic pursuits. Throughout my high school tennis journey, I encountered hurdles that tested my resilience and determination. A wrist injury sidelined me for part of a season, but with the unwavering support of my family, doctors and other dedicated coaches, I learned to overcome this setback. I was encouraged to stay positive and my parents would take me regularly to physical therapists to help me come back stronger and more determined the following year. Participating in fundraising events like Play for Pink, where we raised awareness for Breast Cancer, heightened my sense of community service.
