The four brain chemicals that contribute to your happiness are dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins; I've learned this from the neurotransmitter unit in my current psychology course. The change I wish to see in the community, the country, and the world is a balance of these chemicals in each and every person's brain. It's difficult to witness so incredible human beings suffer through mental illness due to low levels of neurotransmitters. I know that there isn't an automatic cure or some magical pill that will fix everyone's problems. I understand that times get hard for every single person on this planet, myself included. That's why I always try my best to be there for people going through tough times or put a smile on their faces. I do this locally by raising money for families for Santa's Closet, apprenticing down at our Elementary school, and writing letters to senior citizens. JOI and FCCLA partnership in raising money for families unable to afford Christmas presents in my community; this is known as Santa's Closet. For two weeks in November, members of both organizations raise money through donations from local students, businesses, and other organizations. We then shop for presents and other necessities such as clothing and food that the families we have "adopted" are in need of. Wrapping paper is purchased as well to give the families the proper Christmas effect. As FCCLA's chapter president, I hope to encourage and spread more awareness of this cause so those willing can contribute to those in need. But Santa's Closet isn't just about receiving presents; it's about our communities support. The families that we aid know they are recognized and cared for by their neighbors. I'm proud to be a part of an organization that advocates its support for others. Another local thing that I contribute in is our town's Elementary apprenticeship. Every school day, I drive down to the Elementary and help manage a first-grade classroom. I help them learn to read, write, and answer any of their dying questions. Although I am a student myself, they look at me as a teacher and an adult. Therefore I try my very best to be a great role model for them. I come in every day with a smile, ready to help any kid that comes my way with questions or in need of help. I recently learned that their relationships at school are some of the only personal relationships they have due to troubled home life for some first-graders. So connecting with the kids I work with is really important to me; I make sure they know I'm there not only as their teacher but as their friend. Not only do I help out our town's youth, but I reach out to our senior citizens as well. Last year it came to our attention that COVID-19 had hit our senior residents extremely hard. Our seniors were unable to leave their living homes or receive any visitors for months at a time, leaving them lonely and depressed. Last year, both myself and two other FCCLA members created a community outreach program. This program consisted of students writing up their interests to match with local senior residents and become penpals. Our FCCLA advisor told us that when the seniors had got their letter, they had cried. They were happy to know that people were thinking about them during this time. Our pen paling was so successful that we expanded our project to make holiday cards for them, which we still do to this day. I had no idea how much influence we could have on our senior population. Although we do not amount to family members, I'm glad that we could make a difference. I take every opportunity that I can to help both people and my community. It's rewarding to know that I can be a positive impact to those who need it most. Whether it's raising money for the less fortunate, building relationships with the first-graders I apprentice for, or writing letters to seniors to make them feel better, I go into my mission full-heartedly with the mission to spread joy. All I want is for everyone who walks this earth to be happy. The world is a more beautiful place when you are able to look at it with a smile. I may not be able to balance anyone's brain chemicals, but improving lives, even in the slightest, is a step I'm willing to take no matter how big it is.
