Learner Calculus Scholarship
Without calculus, we would not be alive. We would not have cars, we would not have planes, and we would most definitely not have our phones. That is how important it is to life, not just limited to the STEM field. Yet, calculus is still extremely important in the STEM field for all the assistance it can provide in different branches of STEM. Calculus is connected to physics, measurements within science, calculations in technology and engineering, and a fundamental pillar of math. There is a reason why calculus is a course that many people within STEM choose to take and it is because calculus’ reach expands past just math. Despite calculus always forcing people to find the limit, the subject itself is limitless and is the hidden soldier working hard to protect reality as it is. It can help architects calculate the ratios and angles they need to support their buildings while making it easier for the engineers and workers who must bring their blueprints into reality. Calculus is a crucial building block and lays a firm foundation for every career in the working industry. It is not just a random subject that school administrators recommend because it is a difficult course. Yes, of course, it is a challenging class for some people. However, at the end of the day, the takeaway is not just information anyone can forget within days. It is information that people retain and hold with them for a long time. Math learned that sticks for ages and holds on with a tight and strong grip. I can not stress enough how significant calculus is to the STEM field. Everything created and found can be described and explained through calculus concepts and terminology. A strong example of such a scenario would be the calculations used to send the first American human spaceflight and the first orbital flight. NASA and Katherine Johnson utilized Euler’s Method, a commonly taught calculus concept, to calculate the paths for the flight. Despite not being a difficult concept to grasp and use, it was able to send a man into space and around the Earth. That simply emphasizes the impact of calculus within STEM. Everyone still remembers NASA’s legendary breakthroughs despite over six decades having passed, but they fail to remember what led NASA to its breakthroughs. Calculus. Calculus and its infinite solutions to problems we never knew needed to be solved.
