Bio

As an immigrant woman of color, I once feared that these facets of my identity would hinder my aspirations of a global career. However, I soon realized that embracing and leveraging these unique qualities empowers me to stay true to myself and serve as a catalyst for change. With a passion for design and literature, I aim to utilize these tools to advocate for the BIPOC+ community and women's rights while challenging societal norms. Growing up in India, a country where representation is lacking and media often censored, I have always felt out of place while perusing magazines and newspapers. As a prospective Art Director, I hope to set a creative vision that is inclusive of all, an idea that effortlessly engrosses me, making time slip away unnoticed. When I find myself dreaming of a world where every young person can look at magazines and billboards and draw inspiration from people like them, I lose track of all time. Therefore, I founded Alfaaz Magazine—a platform for young individuals who, like me, yearn for change. The word "Alfaaz" derives from Urdu and means "words." It was the suppression of my voice that set me on this journey of self-discovery. What began as a simple call for members on my Instagram story soon transformed into a global community of thousands, united by the goal of effecting change. Through Alfaaz, I discovered the power of visual communication combined with my desire for societal reform, and realized that it is truly an activity that fulfills me like no other. Despite being 8000 miles away from my family, I remain committed to my education.

With a passion for design and literature, I aim to utilize these tools to advocate for the BIPOC+ community and women's rights while challenging societal norms. Growing up in India, a country where representation is lacking and media often censored, I have always felt out of place while perusing magazines and newspapers. As a prospective Art Director, I hope to set a creative vision that is inclusive of all. When I find myself dreaming of a world where every young person can look at magazines and billboards and draw inspiration from people's themes. That is how Alfaaz Magazine, a platform for young people like myself, came to be. Alfaaz, originating from Urdu, translates to words, and it was the restriction of my words that led me to this journey of self-discovery. What began as a simple call for members on my Instagram story soon transformed into a global community of thousands, united by the goal of effecting change. Through Alfaaz, I discovered the transformative power of visual communication combined with my desire for societal reform and realized that it is truly an activity that fulfills me like no other. In April 2021, during the peak of the pandemic in India, that feeling of helplessness returned, and I felt disconnected from my surroundings and loved ones. This is when Team Alfaaz introduced ‘That Alfaaz Show’, a virtual open mic that welcomed artists to display their talents. Seeing everyone bond over their adoration for the arts while finding solace in each other despite all the sadness and pain in the world, reminded me of my love for color psychology, visual communication, and all aspects of design. It was in this moment, during the open-mic, that I truly witnessed the impact of this strong community, not only on me but in other people’s lives as well. I got lucky; not everyone is allowed to rediscover what they stand for the way I did. With Alfaaz, I was able to witness what my skill for visual communication combined with my goal of bringing about reform in society could do. I continue making strides towards examining the world of design and its impact on society through a unique lens, thereby helping me develop a model for social change through the arts. Despite being 8,000 miles away from my family, I am committed to pursuing my education at Parsons and am confident that the abundant resources available here will enable me to excel in all my endeavors. Despite my immense dedication and my family’s efforts, we face financial constraints. My father works as an assistant manager, supporting our family of four, while my mother runs a non-profit organization. We have exhausted all available resources, including loans, yet we struggle to afford the tuition. I firmly believe that attending Parsons will enable me to reach my full potential and contribute meaningfully to society through design and advocacy. I am grateful for your time and consideration, and I remain committed to utilizing my education to benefit those around me. Therefore, by allowing students to choose courses that reflect their passions, colleges nurture future leaders- one of whom I will be known someday.

As an immigrant woman of color, arts education has played a significant role in shaping my life and aspirations. Growing up in India, I was exposed to a rich cultural heritage, but I also experienced the lack of diverse representation in mainstream media and the arts. However, arts education provided me with a sanctuary where I could express myself freely, explore my identity, and find my voice amidst the noise of societal expectations. My passion for art and advocacy was ignited early on, as I observed the power of visual storytelling and its potential for social change. The arts became a means to advocate for the rights and representation of BIPOC, the queer community, and women. It allowed me to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and amplify the voices of those who often went unheard. I often felt isolated to pursue a path that was not traditionally represented by individuals like me. However, these challenges only strengthened my resolve to pave the way for others from underrepresented backgrounds and advocate for inclusivity in the arts. Throughout my journey, I have been inspired by numerous individuals who pushed me to continue pursuing my craft. My mother, in particular, played a pivotal role in inspiring and supporting me. Throughout my life, my mother has committed multiple suicide attempts. However, she gave in to her passion for combining the arts such as painting and theatre to help underprivileged students. Her stories of resilience and determination in the face of adversity were a constant reminder that I too could overcome challenges and make a difference. She encouraged me to follow my passions and use the arts as a means of self-expression and healing. Additionally, I found inspiration in the work of artists, designers, and advocates who used their talents to create positive change in society. Their ability to tell impactful stories through their art motivated me to explore the intersection of design and advocacy. To this extent, I started Alfaaz Magazine. It was born out of the desire to create a platform for open conversations about stigmatized issues, including mental health, within the South Asian community while utilizing visual graphics and the arts. The support and encouragement I received from my community and the global community of Alfaaz readers reinforced my belief in the power of art and storytelling to effect change. As I pursue a career as an Art Director, I am committed to continuous growth and learning. I understand the importance of representation and the role it plays in empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds. My education in the arts equips me with the skills to create inclusive digital experiences that cater to diverse perspectives and needs. An arts education has been a transformative force in my life, providing me with the tools to advocate for the rights and representation of marginalized communities. Inspired by my mother's stories and the work of fellow artists and advocates, I am driven to use my passion for design and advocacy to create a more inclusive and equitable world. Through Alfaaz Magazine and my pursuit of a career as an Art Director, I hope to amplify the voices of BIPOC, the queer community, and women, breaking down barriers and inspiring positive change through visual storytelling and technology. My journey as an immigrant woman of color has taught me the power of resilience, and I am committed to using my skills and knowledge to pave the way for future generations and ensure that diverse voices are celebrated and heard. I am so sorry to hear about your loss; please remember you are not alone. The pain and feeling of helplessness are not unfamiliar to me. When I was six years old, I witnessed my mother's suicide attempt, an image still clear as day in my mind. Not to anyone’s surprise, my mother’s multiple suicide attempts left a lasting impact on my psyche. My parents' lack of understanding and the Indian society's stigma led them to dismiss my battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, further isolating me from seeking help. In January of 2023, financial burdens caused me to experience the most severe depressive episode where I contemplated ending my life, prompting me to seek professional help. With therapy, I finally received a diagnosis of depression and anxiety, leading to the start of medication that brought some relief to my pain. It was this journey of personal suffering and the realization that mental health challenges were not confined to my family alone that compelled me to take action. So, I founded Alfaaz Magazine, a not-for-profit platform where I could candidly address stigmatized issues, especially those concerning mental health within the South Asian community. The magazine's name, derived from the Urdu word for "words," symbolized the feeling of reaching out. A simple call for members on social media quickly blossomed into a global community of thousands, united by a shared goal of effecting change. Through Alfaaz, I discovered the transformative power of visual communication combined with my desire for reform. This creative endeavor filled me with an unparalleled sense of purpose and fulfillment. As a prospective Art Director, I envision setting a creative vision that embraces inclusivity and challenges societal norms. I wish to harness the transformative power of art and visual communication to address the stigmas surrounding mental health, gender, race, and other marginalized identities. My goal is to create impactful campaigns that initiate conversations, dismantle stereotypes, and foster empathy. My experiences with mental health have made me aware of the immense importance of empathy and understanding in human connections. I have learned to seek out individuals who value mental health and support each other unconditionally. I am committed to continuing my education to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to make a lasting impact. However, this doesn't come without challenges. Unfortunately, my father's income of about $25,000 isn’t enough to pay for my college, and my family is on an extremely tight budget. Additionally, my Grandmother got severe Uterine Cancer which came with surgeries, where she contracted Meningitis. Therefore, their medical bills and expenses peaked as my Grandmother received treatment. This was an extremely frightening period in our lives and left my family with serious financial diminution. But I'm not giving up. Despite being 8,000 miles away from my family, I am committed to pursuing my education at Parsons and am confident that the abundant resources available here will enable me to excel in all my endeavors. I scored a GPA of 3.94/4.0 my first semester at Parsons, and 3.84/4.0 my second semester. I am currently pursuing two part-time jobs in addition to 20+ hours of classes a week. I am trying to find another overnight part-time job as I have immense dedication. I hope to achieve my goal of using design to make a difference; to be a leader, and with your help, I might be able to make those dreams come true. I am grateful for this opportunity and would please greatly appreciate any help at all. I remain committed to utilizing my education to benefit those around me. Upon receiving a response from my school’s Vice Principal, who declined my request to consider Pride & Acceptance as a theme for our school’s newsletter, I couldn’t help but read the last two sentences in her email over and over again. When I comprehended what it meant, my heart sank; the place that was supposed to amplify my voice prohibited the expression of love for being a sensitive issue. Confused and angered about why love and identity was an inappropriate subject, I burst out crying in agony with a sinking feeling of helplessness in my stomach. A part of me knew that it wasn’t just my school that I was upset with, but the Indian society- one where same-sex marriage is still unrecognized. Confounded, I decided to tell mom what happened and quoted the last sentence of the email; her response struck me in the best way possible. “Why don’t you?” Upon hearing her words, it felt like the entire world froze to give me the time to reflect on these simple yet weighted words. Why. Don't. You? In that moment, the chaos of the world subsided, and I knew what I had to do. Growing up in India, I have always felt out of place while perusing magazines and newspapers. The lack of diverse voices and perspectives left me feeling like an outsider. As I embark on my journey as a prospective Art Director, my primary goal is to set a creative vision that embraces inclusivity and reflects the diversity of human experiences. My dream of a more inclusive media landscape led me to start Alfaaz Magazine. Alfaaz, originating from Urdu, translates to words, and it was the restriction of my words that led me to this journey of self-discovery. What started as a call for members on my Instagram story soon grew into a community of thousands of young people from around the globe who understood the feeling of helplessness I’d once felt. It gave me a sense of purpose during difficult times. This platform, channeled by teen angst and rebellion, helped me find the courage to come out as queer and find the accepting family I’d always hoped to find. As a queer, immigrant woman of color, my fear that these facets of my identity would hinder my aspirations of a global career was lost. I realized that embracing and leveraging these unique qualities empowers me to stay true to myself and serve as a catalyst for change. With a passion for design and literature, I aim to utilize these tools to advocate for the BIPOC+ community and Queer rights while challenging societal norms. Through Alfaaz, I discovered the transformative power of visual communication combined with my desire for societal reform. As an Art Director, I see myself shaping narratives that challenge stereotypes and amplify the voices of marginalized communities. I believe that representation in media is not just about showcasing diverse faces but also about telling authentic and nuanced stories that reflect the realities of our interconnected world. My mission is to create visual narratives that spark curiosity, evoke emotions, and inspire action. I want to break free from traditional stereotypes and present individuals from all walks of life as multidimensional beings with unique stories to share. My education is instrumental in enhancing my ability to design campaigns that challenge biases, dismantle harmful narratives, and uplift the voices of those who have been silenced for far too long. I aim to create a world where everyone sees themselves represented in the media, and where they can find inspiration and validation in the stories of others.

As an immigrant woman of color, growing up in a household where mental health was stigmatized and undiagnosed my experiences have taught me the significance of breaking the silence around mental health and fostering a supportive environment for those who suffer silently. When I was six years old, I witnessed my mother's suicide attempt, an image still clear as day in my mind. Not to anyone’s surprise, my mother’s multiple suicide attempts left a lasting impact on my psyche. My parents' lack of understanding led them to dismiss my battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, further isolating me from seeking help. When my parents separated at the tender age of 13, my mom, younger sister, and I moved into a cramped single bedroom in my grandparents' apartment, where my mother battled severe depression. The weight of these struggles took a toll on me, and I resorted to self-harm and contemplated ending my life for the first time. This led to 5 years of ups and downs in my mental health. However, my darkest moments eventually led me to a turning point. In January of 2023, I experienced the most severe depressive episode, prompting me to seek professional help. With therapy, I finally received a diagnosis of depression and anxiety, leading to the start of medication that brought some relief to my pain. It was this journey of personal suffering and the realization that mental health challenges were not confined to my family alone that compelled me to take action. I founded Alfaaz Magazine, a platform where I could candidly address stigmatized issues, especially those concerning mental health within the South Asian community. The magazine's name, derived from the Urdu word for "words," symbolized the suppression of my voice that I sought to overcome through this venture. What began as a simple call for members on social media quickly blossomed into a global community of thousands, united by a shared goal of effecting change. This creative endeavor filled me with an unparalleled sense of purpose and fulfillment. My experiences with mental health have made me aware of the immense importance of empathy and understanding in human connections. I have learned to seek out individuals who value mental health and support each other unconditionally. Building and nurturing such relationships has become central to my emotional well-being and personal growth. In pursuing my career aspirations, I am committed to continuing my education to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to make a lasting impact. My vision for the future involves actively advocating for mental health awareness and striving for a society that recognizes the significance of emotional well-being. My ultimate goal is to ensure that no one, especially within marginalized communities, feels the weight of mental health struggles without adequate support and understanding. Through my work, relationships, and relentless pursuit of change, I hope to foster a world where conversations about mental health are not just encouraged but celebrated, leading to a more compassionate and empathetic society for all.

Unlocking the Beauty of Mathematics: A Design Student's Perspective As a design student, I initially approached mathematics with trepidation and fear. Numbers and equations seemed like an insurmountable barrier, and I questioned their relevance to my creative pursuits. However, as I delved deeper into the world of design, I came to realize the profound importance of mathematics and developed a newfound love for learning it. Mathematics is the language of the universe, and its applications are ubiquitous across diverse fields, including design. From the symmetry and patterns found in nature to the precise calculations required in architecture and engineering, math forms the backbone of creativity and innovation. Understanding mathematical principles grants designers the ability to create harmonious and visually pleasing compositions, ensuring that their creations are not just aesthetically appealing but also structurally sound. Geometry, for instance, plays a pivotal role in design. It allows designers to comprehend the relationships between shapes and spaces, enabling the creation of symmetrical and balanced designs that captivate the human eye. The golden ratio, a mathematical concept found in natural structures like seashells and flowers, has been a guiding principle for artists and designers throughout history. Embracing these mathematical foundations empowers me, as a design student, to infuse my work with an inherent sense of order and elegance. Moreover, mathematics fuels innovation in digital design and technology. Computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modeling rely on advanced mathematical algorithms to transform creative ideas into tangible virtual models. Understanding mathematical concepts like vectors, matrices, and calculus empowers me to manipulate complex shapes and visual elements with precision, ultimately translating into more refined and sophisticated designs. As my mathematical proficiency grew, so did my fascination with the interplay between math and aesthetics. I began to discover beauty in the abstract nature of equations and proofs, seeing mathematical expressions as an art form in their own right. The elegance of mathematical solutions, where simplicity and efficiency reign supreme, inspired me to approach my design work with a similar mindset—striving for simplicity and clarity in my creations while still conveying a powerful message. Mathematics is not just about calculations and formulas; it cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving skills that transcend the classroom and become invaluable assets in the world of design. Analyzing design challenges from a mathematical perspective equips me with a unique problem-solving toolkit, enabling me to devise innovative solutions that stand out from the conventional approach. Beyond practicality, learning mathematics kindles a sense of curiosity and wonder. Exploring complex mathematical concepts feels akin to embarking on a thrilling adventure, unearthing hidden connections and unraveling the mysteries of the universe. Each mathematical discovery is a triumph, nurturing a sense of accomplishment and boosting my confidence as a designer. Furthermore, my newfound love for mathematics has instilled in me a growth mindset—a belief that with dedication and effort, I can tackle any challenge and conquer any fear. Embracing math despite my initial apprehensions has not only expanded my knowledge but also reshaped my attitude towards learning itself. I now approach unfamiliar subjects with curiosity and an eagerness to learn, knowing that the journey of discovery is as enriching as the destination. As a design student who once dreaded math, I now see it as an essential tool that empowers me to create purposeful and innovative designs. Mathematics grants me the ability to perceive the underlying beauty of the universe and translates into the elegance of my creative expressions. With every equation I solve and each mathematical concept I grasp, my passion for both mathematics and design deepens, propelling me forward on a path of continuous growth and inspiration.

I got lucky; not everyone is allowed to rediscover what they stand for the way I did. Through Alfaaz, I discovered the transformative power of visual communication combined with my desire for societal reform and realized that it is truly an activity that fulfills me like no other. After searching far and wide for institutions with concentrations with an intersection of advocacy and design, I found myself immersed in Parsons’ Communication Design major. This program not only enhances my skills but also offers a unique perspective on the impact of art and design in society. Through it, I aim to develop a model for social change through the arts. Despite being 8,000 miles away from my family, I am committed to pursuing my education at Parsons, and am confident that the abundant resources available at Parsons will enable me to excel in all my endeavors. Despite my immense dedication and my family’s efforts, we face financial constraints. We have exhausted all available resources, yet we struggle to afford the tuition. I firmly believe that attending Parsons will enable me to reach my full potential and contribute meaningfully to society through design and advocacy. With the August 2023 tuition deadline approaching, my family falls just slightly short. I humbly request any additional financial assistance that can be offered, knowing that Parsons has the power to transform my life. Parsons nurtures future leaders- one of whom I aspire to be someday, with your help, I strongly believe I can make it happen, and remain committed to utilizing my education to benefit those around me. As a first-generation woman of color, I once feared that these facets of my identity would hinder my aspirations of a global career. However, I soon realized that embracing and leveraging these unique qualities empowers me to stay true to myself and serve as a catalyst for change. With a passion for design and literature, I aim to utilize these tools to advocate for the BIPOC+ community and women's rights while challenging societal norms. Growing up in India, a country where representation is lacking and media is often censored, I have always felt out of place while perusing magazines and newspapers. Magazine Design is a creative and dynamic field that seamlessly combines visual storytelling, typography, and layout to captivate readers and convey powerful messages. As a lover of both art and literature, magazine design allows me to fuse these passions into a single creative outlet. The program not only enhances my skills but also offers a unique perspective on the impact of art and design in society. Through it, I aim to develop a model for social change through the arts. Despite being 8,000 miles away from my family, I am committed to pursuing my education at Parsons. I scored a GPA of 3.94/4.0 my first semester at Parsons, and 3.84/4.0 my second semester. I continue to firmly believe that attending Parsons will enable me to reach my full potential and contribute meaningfully to society through design and advocacy. In terms of our financial circumstances, my father is the sole provider for our family of four, while my mother runs a Non-Profit NGO. With Living Expenses, Medical Bills, Loan Interest Payments, Educational Expenses for my younger sister, etc. My father's income isn’t enough to pay for my college. With my younger sister starting High School, and her quarterly fees increasing by thousands of dollars, making it higher than our monthly rent, my family is on an extremely tight budget. My Grandfather, who is retired, agreed to fund a portion of my educational expenses at Parsons, helping me afford tuition. Unfortunately, my Grandmother got severe Uterine Cancer. This came with surgeries, where she contracted Meningitis. Therefore, their medical expenses peaked as my Grandmother received treatment including surgeries, hospital admissions and scans, medicines, physical therapy, and more. An extremely frightening period in our lives, this left my grandparents with serious financial diminution. With other financial circumstances such as the interest for our loans increasing, an increase in my rent in New York, increase in tuition, my family falls short. To bridge this gap, we are seeking a second Education Loan. I am also applying for a second Part-Time Job, and have been applying for external scholarships. Therefore, I humbly request any additional financial assistance that can be offered, knowing that Parsons has the power to transform my life and make me one of your success stories. I am grateful for your time and consideration. Parsons nurtures future leaders- one of whom I aspire to be someday, with your help, I strongly believe I can make it happen, and remain committed to utilizing my education to benefit those around me.
