Bio

My name is Krystal. While my primary focus lies in geology, my life is diverse and experiences span across various countries and through moments of both wonder and challenge. Professionally, I am dedicated to the study of geology, a passion ignited by the Earth's mesmerizing intricacies. Beyond this, I'm a traveler who has explored the landscapes and cultures of the UK, France, Austria, Italy, Spain, and my absolute favorite, Japan - a place that captivates me and where I intend to establish roots in the coming years. Amidst my academic and adventurous pursuits, I find inspiration in music and art. As a mother of three boys, my life is a beautiful whirlwind of exploration, learning, and nurturing young minds. Originally from Puerto Rico, my journey has led me through various states over the last decade, offering unique experiences but also exposing me to the harsh realities of natural disasters. I've encountered and weathered hurricanes in both Florida and Puerto Rico, with the devastating destruction of my home in the recent Florida hurricane Michael. Also, close encounters with tornadoes and minor earthquakes have shaped my understanding of resilience, adaptation, and the vital importance of disaster management. Through these experiences, I've developed a profound interest in understanding how geology intertwines with disaster management, hoping to leverage this knowledge for more resilient communities in the future.

Embarking on this lengthy academic journey has been a true test of perseverance, spanning over 15 years. My story began with a full sports scholarship in computer engineering right after high school, but life took unexpected turns as I got married and started a family. Now, with three kids in their teens and remarried, my return to college is driven not by obligation but by my genuine desire to enjoy this phase of my life without external pressures. As I navigate through this awesome quarter, nearing its completion, I've gained invaluable knowledge and inspiration from both teachers and younger peers. The prospect of completing my degree in Geology and Emergency Management is exciting, and I find myself drawn to the prospect of a Geology Degree, envisioning a lifestyle that includes traveling and creating content about traditions, culture, and history in the countries I visit, backed by accurate scientific information. In the realm of science, my passion is fueled by a combination of creativity, critical thinking, world knowledge, and aesthetics. Pursuing a Geology Degree requires excellent communication, problem-solving, and collaborative skills—all of which I aim to master. Additionally, my background in music, art cultivated since middle school and shared with my kids, is a source of joy and expression. Researching and planning for a home music/photography/science studio, coupled with aspirations to establish an LLC company for low-cost music production, Art and STEAM represent my commitment to providing opportunities to everyone. As a parent, my primary motivation is to provide unwavering support for my kids' future and adulthood. This sense of responsibility extends beyond my family, as evidenced by my role as a Student Teacher at Pierce College, working alongside my professor for the physical geology class. Furthermore, being part of the Association of Geology in WA, actively assisting in monthly meetings, and planning a San Rafael/Capitol Reef Field Excursion underscore my dedication to advancing my studies in Geology. Looking ahead, my dream is to work as a geologist, specializing in volcanos and tectonic plate movement. The prospect of working in Japan holds a special place in my heart, aligning with my passion for geological exploration and cultural experiences. In conclusion, the completion of my degree and personal growth will mark a 180-degree change in my life and, by extension, my family's life. Leveraging the opportunities life presents, I am confident in my ability to make a positive impact on my community. Whether by offering low-cost or free opportunities in STEAM and the music industry or advocating for accessible art programs, my goal is to contribute to a society where the universal language of art and science is not confined to the privileged. This journey is more than academic—it's a pursuit of personal fulfillment and a commitment to shaping a future where everyone has access to the enriching power of the arts and learning.
