    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
The lyric "I've got a war in my mind" from Olivia Rodrigo's ‘GUTS’ vividly echoes my own teenage experiences and encapsulates the tumultuous nature of adolescence. This line aptly describes the internal chaos that many teenagers confront as they embark on the arduous journey of self-discovery. It's a period characterized by intense emotional turmoil, where a whirlwind of new feelings and thoughts often collide, creating what feels like an incessant "war" within one's own mind. This internal struggle is typically fueled by the hormonal changes, mounting social pressures, and relentless quest for identity that are inherent to this stage of life. During adolescence, individuals frequently find themselves inundated with conflicting voices and expectations, ranging from societal norms to personal dreams and aspirations. The pressure of conforming to these external expectations while yearning to carve out an authentic identity creates an ongoing clash. Adolescents are constantly wrestling with who they are supposed to be versus who they genuinely want to become. This internal conflict often manifests as anxiety and stress, as they grapple with the multifaceted demands of school, friendships, and family dynamics, all the while striving to find their place in the vast, often overwhelming world. The lyric not only captures the pervasive sense of being overwhelmed but also resonates with the universal teenage experiences of confusion and uncertainty. Adolescents are frequently confronted with tough decisions regarding their future, complex friendships, and romantic entanglements, all of which amplify the internal war they face. These formative years are marked by an intense emotional complexity—an ever-shifting landscape of hope, fear, joy, and despair. "I've got a war in my mind" poignantly illustrates these struggles, encapsulating the emotional intensity that often accompanies them. What makes this line particularly impactful is its power to remind teenagers that they are not alone in their experiences. It serves as a comforting echo of shared struggles, validating the feeling of conflict and the challenging path of self-discovery. Many teenagers might feel isolated or believe that their struggles are unique, but this lyric reassures them that feeling conflicted is a universal aspect of growing up. It encourages a sense of solidarity, suggesting that while the internal war might feel isolating, it is a familiar battlefield for many. In conclusion, the lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's ‘GUTS’ stands out as a profound and authentic reflection of the adolescent experience. It masterfully captures the essence of teenage life—a time fraught with internal battles and emotional highs and lows. Through her poignant words, Rodrigo offers a voice to the silent struggles of many, reminding them of the shared nature of their journey and the resilience required to navigate it. Thank you for your time and consideration! -Krystal- Rodrigo, O. "GUTS." Released by Geffen Records, 2023.
    Ella's Gift
Experiencing loss and adversity often serves as an unexpected catalyst for growth. In my personal journey, the passing of my husband in 2007 and later, my father in 2014, marked profound emotional upheavals. Amidst these tragedies, I was tasked with the formidable challenge of continuing education while raising four children as a single mother. This path not only tested my resilience but also illuminated my life’s purpose: to better understand human behavior and make a meaningful contribution to mental health—a choice deeply interwoven with my personal narrative of grief, healing, and resilience. At 42, having earned an undergraduate degree in social science, I stand on the cusp of the next significant chapter in my educational journey: earning a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling. This endeavor is more than an academic progression—it is a declaration of my commitment to transform personal suffering into a tool for societal benefit. My experiences with bipolar disorder, P.T.S.D, anxiety, and depression, catalyzed by personal losses, instilled a profound empathy for those navigating similar struggles. It is this empathy that fuels my ambition to become a mental health counselor, providing solace and support to others. Balancing academia and motherhood has honed my skills in time management, adaptability, and perseverance—traits indispensable in navigating life's unpredictable tides. Establishing structured schedules that encompass both study and family time has been vital. By including my children in these plans, I foster an environment of mutual understanding and cooperation, which ensures both their development and my academic success. Support systems, including family and community resources for childcare, have been instrumental in affording me the time and mental space necessary for academic pursuits. Moreover, the pursuit of this degree comes with its challenges, especially financial strains. Completing my studies requires substantial resources, a considerable burden for a single parent. Thus, scholarships become not just financial support but symbols of possibility, alleviating cost-related anxieties and demonstrating to my children the tangible rewards of dedication and hard work. Through both personal experience and professional roles such as a Certified Nurse’s Aide, I have witnessed the consequences of untreated mental health issues. This observation has only cemented my resolve to focus my career on providing accessible mental health care, particularly to marginalized communities. My goal is not just to support individuals but to contribute to a broader social change that respects and addresses the mental health struggles within these communities. Ultimately, this journey is about more than a degree or career advancement. It represents the persistence of my dream to make a difference in the world—a dream forged from the challenges I have overcome and the insights I have gained. Through my work, I hope to inspire a similar perseverance in my children, providing them with a legacy of empathy, strength, and the tenacity to transform challenges into opportunities for growth. Thus, as I proceed with my academic and professional aspirations, I embrace the lessons from my past, the strength of my present, and the hope for a future where I can serve both my family and my community as a skilled mental health counselor. In this way, I continue to honor the memory of those I have lost, using the lessons learned from grief as a healing force for others. Thank you for your time and consideration. Krystal Bristol
    Poynter Scholarship
Balancing education with family commitments is a challenging yet rewarding endeavor, especially as a single mother of four children. It requires time management, relentless determination, and strategic planning to succeed academically while ensuring the well-being and development of my children. As a 42-year-old who has successfully completed undergraduate studies in social science, my next academic pursuit is an MS in mental health counseling. This achievement will not only further my career but also serve as an example to my children of the importance of perseverance and education. One critical aspect of balancing education with family is effective time management. I plan to establish a structured schedule to allocate specific times for study, family activities, and rest. Utilizing tools like planners or digital apps can help in devising a weekly plan that clearly outlines my objectives and responsibilities. Furthermore, including my children in the planning process can foster understanding and cooperation. It can help them realize the necessity of my academic pursuits and the mutual benefits that would result from my educational advancements, such as a better standard of living and more opportunities for our family. Acknowledging the challenges that may arise, I am ready to adapt these plans to accommodate urgent family needs, ensuring flexibility without compromising my academic goals. Support systems are pivotal in managing these dual responsibilities. Reaching out to family members, friends, or community organizations for assistance and support can significantly alleviate the burden. For instance, arranging dependable childcare solutions will allow me the time needed to attend classes, study, and complete assignments without worry. Encouraging my children to participate in age-appropriate household chores can also teach them responsibility while providing me with essential time to focus on my studies. The pursuit of my MS in mental health counseling is not just an educational goal but a step toward securing a more stable future for my family. The field holds personal significance, as it allows me to contribute positively to society by assisting individuals in need of mental health support. This career path offers flexible working options which can better accommodate my family responsibilities. However, pursuing this degree presents financial challenges. Tuition fees, books, and other academic expenses are considerable burdens when added to the daily costs of raising four children. This is where the scholarship plays a crucial role. Receiving the scholarship would alleviate the financial pressure and enable me to focus more on my studies and less on monetary concerns. It would provide the means to purchase necessary learning materials and cover other education-related expenses without compromising my family’s needs. Furthermore, the scholarship would serve as a testament to my children of the value of hard work and dedication, showcasing that external support can help bridge the gap between ambition and achievement. In conclusion, although balancing family and education as a single parent is challenging, it is achievable with discipline, support, and resourcefulness. The scholarship would provide essential financial support that would enable me to earn my MS in mental health counseling and inspire my children with a tangible example of perseverance and success. As a child, my aspirations were split between two distinct but interconnected professions: law and counseling. The idea of becoming a lawyer captured my imagination due to the allure of the courtroom, the eloquence required in defending a case, and the broader societal impact lawyers can have. However, my interest in human behavior and interpersonal dynamics led me to also consider counseling as a potential career path. I was captivated by the idea of understanding what makes people tick, how they interact with one another, and how those interactions could be improved or guided for better outcomes. As I grew older, my educational journey played a crucial role in shaping my career aspirations. During my undergraduate studies in the social sciences, my engagement with subjects that delved deep into human behavior ignited a more intense passion for counseling. Courses that explored psychological theories and the socio-cultural factors that influence behavior resonated with me on a profound level. The more I learned, the more I realized how counseling could directly facilitate personal growth and healing in others. This understanding solidified my determination to pursue mental health counseling over law. Today, I am actively pursuing a master's degree in mental health counseling, a path that feels not only natural but also deeply rewarding. My initial dream of becoming a lawyer, while still a noble pursuit, took a backseat as my ambition for counseling grew more substantial. This decision was not born out of disillusionment with law but rather an enriched understanding of where my true passions lay. Counseling provides a direct, personal, and hands-on way to make a meaningful impact in people's lives, making it a perfect fit for my aspirations to help others navigate their emotional and psychological challenges. Reflecting on this journey, it's clear that my childhood aspirations have not vanished but have evolved, becoming more focused and aligned with my interests and skills. While the excitement for legal studies remains a part of my intellectual curiosity, I have found a more purposeful and fulfilling path in mental health counseling. Through this career, I am committed to supporting individuals in unlocking personal insights, overcoming obstacles, and achieving emotional resilience, which mirrors my initial dream of impacting people's lives through guidance and support. In conclusion, while my childhood dream featured two potential paths—law and counseling—the road I took shows the evolution of dreams in response to personal growth and educational experiences. My current studies and career pursuits in mental health counseling affirm my dedication to understanding and assisting others, genuinely fulfilling a core aspiration I held from a young age. Returning to school as a 40-year-old widow and mother of four has presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities. One of the primary challenges I have faced is the financial burden. The cost of tuition, books, and other school-related expenses adds an additional layer of stress to my already stretched budget. As a single parent, managing finances becomes crucial, and finding ways to fund my education while providing for my family has been quite demanding. Exploring scholarships, grants, and part-time work opportunities within the school community has become a necessary part of my daily life. Although sometimes overwhelming, this pursuit has developed my resourcefulness and reinforced the valuable lesson of working within one's means. Time management is another significant challenge. Balancing school, work, and family life requires meticulous planning and prioritization. I often find myself juggling between attending classes, completing assignments, working to support my family, and fulfilling my duties as a mother. This constant balancing act can be exhausting but has taught me valuable skills in organization and prioritization. Creating a structured schedule and leveraging tools like digital calendars and task lists has been instrumental in ensuring that no responsibility is neglected. I have learned to cherish the importance of effective time management and the discipline it brings to everyday life. Moreover, being out of the academic environment for several years meant I had to adjust to new learning methods, technologies, and academic expectations. The rapid integration of digital platforms and online resources into today's academia was initially daunting but has allowed me to develop resilience and adaptability. Participating in online forums, utilizing e-books, and engaging with digital homework platforms have become integral parts of my educational journey. This transition has enhanced my technological prowess and has inadvertently introduced me to a myriad of online communities that share similar academic pursuits. Despite these challenges, the journey is rewarding, as it enables me to set a positive example for my children and to pursue a career in mental health counseling that I am passionate about. Education is empowering; it not only instills knowledge but also builds confidence. By overcoming these hurdles, I aim to show my children the importance of pursuing one's dreams despite the difficulties, illustrating through action that it is never too late to chase one's passions. In conclusion, while returning to school under these circumstances is challenging, it is also incredibly fulfilling. The financial struggles, time management hurdles, and academic adjustments are obstacles that I am learning to overcome through determination and hard work. This experience has underscored the importance of perseverance and the power of education in transforming one's life. Education as "an investment for your future" is something I have come to understand viscerally. By remaining steadfast in my efforts, I not only pave a path for my career aspirations but also inspire my children to value learning, resilience, and dedication in their own lives. Pushing Our Scholars Forward
I am currently pursuing an MS in mental health counseling, due to several reasons deeply rooted in personal passion and the desire to make a significant impact on society. Having completed my undergraduate studies in social science, I have developed a foundational understanding of societal dynamics and human behavior, which has driven me to delve deeper into the world of mental health. This field is not only intellectually rewarding but also allows me to address a critical aspect of individual and community well-being—mental health. Mental wellness is often overlooked, yet it is fundamental to our overall health. By becoming a mental health counselor, I can contribute positively to society by providing support, therapy, and a listening ear to those grappling with mental health issues. This career path enables me to further understand complex human emotions and behaviors and to deploy effective therapeutic strategies to foster mental resilience among individuals. The knowledge I acquire through this program will allow me to serve various communities by offering mental health services that are accessible, empathetic, and effective. In particular, I aim to work with underprivileged populations who may lack access to quality mental health care. Providing support in these areas not only enhances the quality of life for individuals but also promotes healthier communities, reducing social costs associated with untreated mental health issues. Moreover, my role as a mental health counselor can offer flexible working conditions, allowing me to balance my professional responsibilities with familial duties, particularly essential as I am raising four children on my own. Balancing work while being a college student has undeniably shaped my academic journey and personal life significantly. Working has instilled in me a sense of discipline and time management skills that are crucial for balancing multiple responsibilities. Often, it means early mornings, late nights, and creatively utilizing every available moment to study. This rigorous schedule has taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability, skills that are invaluable both inside and outside the academic realm. Balancing work with studies also highlights the importance of self-care and the need for establishing a sustainable work-life balance, ensuring that neither area suffers detrimentally. While working has sometimes added pressure, it has also reinforced my determination to succeed in my studies so that I can transition into a career that offers more stable and rewarding opportunities. The experience has further motivated my pursuit of a mental health counseling degree, underscoring my belief that overcoming adversity is essential for personal growth and development. Scholarships play a vital role in this journey by alleviating financial burdens of tuition fees, books, and supplies, thus allowing greater focus on my academic and professional aspirations. Additionally, obtaining financial aid serves as a testament to my children of what dedication and hard work can achieve, inspiring them to pursue their dreams regardless of the obstacles they may face. In conclusion, while being a single parent and a student is challenging, it is a manageable and rewarding feat with careful planning, community support, and financial aid like scholarships. It epitomizes the essence of perseverance and sets a tangible example for my children, illustrating that commitment and hard work can drive success in achieving educational and professional goals. By obtaining my degree, I aim to contribute positively to society through mental health counseling, advocating for mental wellness, and assisting those who might otherwise remain unseen and unheard. I am currently about to start a graduate certificate program before I transfer to another SUNY to begin my MS in mental health counseling. Along with studying human behavior, through college courses, I have also done schooling earning my CASAC. Enabling me to work with individuals with substance abuse disorder. Before deciding to further my education I have a tremendous amount of experience working with a diverse population of individuals with many levels of care and assistance. I have worked with the elderly, becoming a Certified nurses aide (CNA) at 18 working in nursing homes for many years. I have also worked under the title of direct support professional (DSP) advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities. I worked in a residential house made up of 5 individuals who are autistic, caring for their activities of daily living, as well as teaching them new skills or working on the ones they have been taught. I worked as a home health aide (HHA), assisting at times with hospice, offering families the emotional support they needed at such a vulnerable time. Along with pursuing my MS degree in mental health counseling, I also would love to obtain my masters in ABA. In my personal life , I have been face to face with mental health. Being the biggest and at times only help to my older brother who suffers not only from mental health issues but addiction as well. I became a widow, very young in my mid twenties. I have had to learn to navigate through life changing situations, with not much support. I vowed very young knowing I had mental health issues myself that I would help those who suffer just as I had. I am living proof that one can turn a disability into an ability through much work navigation and dedication. Receiving financial aide would assist me in the financial burden and stress of being able to fulfill my personal dreams , continuing my academic journey. I do not only intend to assist individuals directly in their path to a healthy lifestyle, but also with family issues, societal pressures, social justice, and equality. I also would like to contribute to the mental health field, by getting involved in studies, research, and hands on care to our future generations. Thank you so much for considering me !!
