With a dedication to my academic pursuits, interests, and sacrifices, I am motivated to instill a future of success and joy. I aim to have a career in the business field, where I can make financial decisions, advocate for change, and improve our communities. My academic pursuits are combined with the goal of nurturing my passions. These passions are represented through dancing, a form of self-expression I obtained at a young age. This multifaceted purpose stems from the desire to honor my parents’ sacrifices and the path to self-development. Growing up in an immigrant household, my parents were determined to provide a better life for me. However, they faced difficulties in securing stable employment due to their limited English proficiency. This led to a financial burden, a struggle that pressured both my parents and me. However, I channeled my energy into my academic pursuits. When I realized that education could be a pivotal tool for overcoming the financial challenges that my family faced, I began studying relentlessly. I prioritized my academics and felt the need to push harder. My time management, work ethic, and critical thinking skills significantly improved as I challenged myself to AP and honors courses. Honing these skills would serve as a gateway to better future opportunities that could eventually provide financial stability for my family and me. Their relentless efforts to build a new life in a foreign land inspired me to push through barriers. I realized that dwelling on hardships would not serve me; instead, I chose to see these challenges as stepping stones toward a future of opportunity and fortune. However, my parents’ sacrifices are not the sole purpose of my journey. I used dancing as an outlet for coping with stress. I was able to express myself freely with a sense of achievement and discipline whenever I fixed my errors and mistakes. Through dance, I learned the value of dedication and perseverance in the face of setbacks. These skills honed me into becoming an individual who pushes and perseveres through barriers. As I continued to explore my interests, I was drawn to community activism as well. I began to see the importance of using my voice to address issues that mattered to me. For example, I became actively involved in advocating against the proposed Sixers arena project in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, which threatened to displace local communities. I also spoke out about the inadequate public education funding by engaging with elected officials in Harrisburg. These experiences were empowering, as they provided me with a platform to advocate for change and support causes that aligned with my values. My involvement in community activism helped me understand the significance of promoting equity and justice, particularly for marginalized communities in need. It has shown me that meaningful change often starts with individuals who are willing to stand up for what they believe in. Through these activities, I realized that my hobbies were sources of strength and perspective. Not only was I fueled by my parents’ sacrifices, but I came to the understanding that self-expression is crucial for my personal growth. Both my parents’ sacrifices and my personal experiences have fueled my dedication toward a future of academic pursuit and self-growth. I plan to use my newfound knowledge to pursue a business career that focuses on leadership, engagement, collaboration, and analysis. With my experiences in both financial and personal struggles, I aim to develop data-driven solutions and make a tangible impact in local and broader contexts. Committed to improving communities and promoting equitable business practices, I look forward to making a meaningful difference in my future.
Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is important to me as a student because it shapes every aspect of my academic and personal life. Growing up in a low-income immigrant household, I’ve faced numerous challenges that could have easily overwhelmed me. Financial pressures, my parents’ struggles with employment, and the expectations placed on me to succeed often weighed heavily on my mind. These challenges made it clear that managing my mental health was crucial to not only my success in school but also my well-being as an individual. As a student deeply invested in academics and extracurricular activities, I’ve come to realize that mental health directly impacts my ability to focus, retain information, and perform well in school. Balancing AP and honors courses with my extracurriculars, such as being the president of the Korean Student Association and engaging in community activism, has often been overwhelming. Stress and anxiety can easily build up if I’m not mindful of my mental state. During my dance journey, I found that when I was feeling mentally drained, my performance suffered. It was through dance that I learned the importance of mental health and self-care. Dance became my emotional outlet, helping me cope with stress and providing a space where I could express my feelings freely. Every time I fixed a mistake in my dance routine, I felt a sense of achievement and relief, which gave me the confidence to push through academic and personal barriers. Realizing the importance of maintaining my mental health, I began advocating for mental wellness in my community. At school, I’m not just a student who quietly handles stress—I actively encourage others to prioritize their mental health as well. As president of the Korean Student Association, I’ve organized events that promote mindfulness, encouraging students to take breaks from their rigorous academic schedules. I understand that students, especially those in competitive environments, often feel the pressure to constantly excel, which can take a toll on their mental well-being. By creating spaces where students can talk openly about their struggles and supporting one another, I help foster a sense of community and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. In addition to my involvement at school and home, I’ve also used my community activism to advocate for mental health resources. During my efforts to protest the proposed Sixers arena in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, I spoke to local residents about the importance of providing mental health support to communities facing displacement. I’ve also engaged with elected officials to address the lack of funding for public education, which directly affects students’ mental health by contributing to overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources, and heightened stress. These experiences have shown me that mental health advocacy goes beyond just individual well-being—it extends to ensuring communities have the resources they need to thrive. In all these ways, I’ve realized that mental health is the foundation for success and happiness. By advocating for mental health in my school, home, and community, I’ve not only helped others but also gained a deeper understanding of myself. Mental health is not just a personal issue but a communal one, and supporting one another is key to creating a healthier, more supportive environment for everyone.

Growing up in an immigrant household, my parents were determined to provide a better life for me, though they struggled to find stable employment due to their limited English proficiency. This created a financial burden that placed pressure on both my parents and me. Recognizing the challenges we faced, I channeled my energy into my academic pursuits. I realized that education could be a pivotal tool to overcome these difficulties, so I began studying relentlessly. I prioritized my academics, constantly pushing myself to improve. Through AP and honors courses, I significantly strengthened my time management, work ethic, and critical thinking skills. These skills have become essential in shaping my journey toward creating a better future, not only for myself but also for my family. Inspired by my parents’ relentless efforts to build a new life in a foreign land, I realized that dwelling on hardships would not serve me. Instead, I chose to view these challenges as opportunities for growth. Their sacrifices fueled my determination, but my journey didn’t stop there. I found another outlet for overcoming stress through dance. Dance allowed me to express myself freely while teaching me discipline and perseverance. Fixing mistakes and refining my craft gave me a sense of accomplishment and individuality, which helped me navigate life’s challenges. Additionally, I became passionate about community activism. I advocated against the proposed Sixers arena project in Philadelphia’s Chinatown, which threatened to displace local communities, and I engaged with elected officials in Harrisburg about the lack of public education funding. These experiences empowered me to stand up for what I believe in and fight for equity and justice, especially for marginalized communities. Through these endeavors, I realized that self-expression, personal growth, and advocacy are crucial aspects of my identity, driving me toward a future filled with purpose.

My experience with mental health has been a defining aspect of my life, shaping my goals, relationships, and how I view the world. Dealing with anxiety and self-doubt has forced me to confront my vulnerabilities and learn how to navigate them in ways that have made me stronger and more self-aware. Anxiety has often made even simple tasks feel overwhelming, and self-doubt has caused me to question my abilities, especially in areas I’m passionate about, like dance and academics. There were times when I felt like I couldn’t keep up, whether it was in rehearsals for a dance showcase or preparing for an important exam. These feelings were frustrating and sometimes made me feel isolated, as though I was the only one struggling. However, facing these challenges head-on taught me a crucial lesson: acknowledging and addressing mental health is essential to achieving any form of success. This realization has had a direct impact on my goals. I’ve learned that success is not just about reaching external milestones but also about maintaining a healthy state of mind. As I pursue a business career, I want to integrate mental health awareness into my professional life. I envision myself in a role where I can help create work environments that prioritize the well-being of everyone involved. Having experienced the toll that anxiety can take, I am driven to ensure that others have the support they need to thrive both personally and professionally. My goal is to be a leader who not only values productivity but also understands the importance of mental health in fostering a positive and effective workplace. Mental health struggles have also shaped my relationships. Experiencing anxiety has made me more empathetic toward others who are going through their own challenges. I’ve become more attuned to the signs that someone might be struggling, and I’m quick to offer support, whether it’s a friend, a fellow student, or one of my dance students. As a dance instructor, I’ve made it a priority to create a supportive environment where my students feel safe to express themselves and where their emotional well-being is just as important as their technical progress. This has strengthened my connections with others, as people appreciate being seen and understood on a deeper level. My understanding of the world has also been shaped by my mental health journey. I’ve come to realize that the world can be both challenging and beautiful, and that it’s okay to struggle. This perspective has helped me build resilience. I’ve learned that setbacks and difficulties don’t define me, but how I respond to them does. Every time I’ve faced anxiety or self-doubt and pushed through, I’ve come out stronger and more confident in my ability to handle whatever comes my way. Ultimately, my experience with mental health has taught me to be kind to myself and others, to prioritize well-being, and to understand that everyone is dealing with something. These lessons have shaped my goals, deepened my relationships, and enriched my view of the world. Moving forward, I’m committed to using what I’ve learned to create positive change in my own life and in the lives of those around me.

Living with anemia has been a constant challenge, affecting my stamina, energy levels, and overall ability to stay active. Anemia makes it difficult for my body to produce enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to my tissues, leading to fatigue and shortness of breath, especially during physical activities. Despite these challenges, I have continued to pursue my passion for dance, a journey that has not only strengthened my resolve but also shaped my goals for the future. Growing up, dance has always been an integral part of my life. It’s a medium through which I express myself, find joy, and connect with others. However, my anemia has made this journey far from easy. There have been countless times when I’ve felt breathless and exhausted, struggling to keep up with the demands of rigorous rehearsals and performances. My condition often limits my stamina, and I’ve had to be mindful of my body’s signals to avoid pushing myself too far. Yet, in many ways, these challenges have fueled my determination rather than diminished it. I’ve learned to adapt, preparing meticulously for every showcase and performance. I focus on maintaining a balanced diet rich in iron, staying hydrated, and pacing myself during rehearsals to conserve energy. These strategies have become second nature to me, allowing me to manage my condition while still doing what I love. Moreover, my experience as a dance instructor has been deeply influenced by my condition. Guiding new and experienced dancers, I’ve faced the challenge of managing my own limitations while ensuring that I provide the best possible support to my students. This dual responsibility has taught me the importance of patience, both with myself and with others. I’ve learned to give constructive criticism and encouragement while being empathetic to the struggles that every dancer faces, including those related to health. These experiences have not only shaped my approach to dance but have also influenced my broader goals for the future. Living with anemia has made me keenly aware of the importance of resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. It has taught me that challenges, while difficult, can be overcome with the right mindset and strategies. This lesson extends beyond dance and into my aspirations within the business world, where I aim to apply the same principles of preparation, adaptability, and determination to achieve my goals. In the future, I aspire to combine my passion for dance with my interest in business. I see myself in a role that involves leadership and decision-making, where I can use my analytical skills and empathetic approach to drive positive change. Whether it’s in business analytics, management, or even a creative director role, I want to be in a position where I can make a meaningful impact, just as I have in my dance journey. Ultimately, my experience with anemia has taught me that limitations do not define us; it’s our response to them that shapes our path. I am determined to continue pursuing my passions, whether in dance, business, or any other endeavor, while also advocating for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. My goal is to inspire others to overcome their own challenges, showing that with resilience and perseverance, we can achieve our dreams, no matter the obstacles in our way.

Growing up in Philadelphia has profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations, intertwining my experiences within a vibrant yet challenging environment. The city's dynamic cultural tapestry, coupled with the socioeconomic realities of my upbringing, has been instrumental in shaping who I am today—a young Asian American girl striving to challenge stereotypes, uplift others, and achieve financial stability. Philadelphia's diversity exposed me to many perspectives and experiences from an early age. As someone from a low-income background, I witnessed firsthand the disparities that many marginalized communities face. This awareness cultivated a deep sense of empathy and social responsibility within me, driving my passion for social work and activism. My time working with Philly Bolt, a nonprofit organization, solidified these values. Initially, I struggled with preconceived notions, but a turning point came when I observed a coach comforting a grieving student. This moment taught me the importance of empathy, understanding, and patience—which have since become central to my relationships and interactions. My experiences in Philadelphia also nurtured a strong sense of resilience and determination. The challenges I faced, both personal and communal, pushed me to develop a mindset focused on overcoming obstacles and achieving success despite the odds. As an Asian American girl, I often felt the weight of the "model minority" stereotype, which initially led me to internalize unrealistic expectations. However, I later rejected this narrative, instead embracing a self-view marked by keen observation, strategic thinking, and the courage to explore beyond boundaries. This shift in perspective has been instrumental in shaping my career aspirations, particularly my interest in business analytics and management. Philadelphia's rich cultural scene, particularly its dance community, has also played a significant role in shaping my identity and career goals. Dance has been a passion of mine since childhood, serving as both a creative outlet and a source of confidence. As a dance instructor, I learned the importance of perseverance, constructive criticism, and leadership. These lessons have translated into my aspirations within the business world, where I aim to use my analytical skills and empathetic approach to make a meaningful impact. The discipline and creativity I developed through dance have fueled my interest in roles that require strategic thinking, data analysis, and decision-making—such as business intelligence analysis and market research. Growing up in Philadelphia also shaped my relationships, teaching me the value of community and collaboration. Whether it was working with students at Philly Bolt or connecting with peers in the dance community, I learned that success is often a collective effort. This belief has influenced my desire to work in environments that prioritize teamwork, communication, and mutual support. My experiences have shown me that by uplifting others, we create a ripple effect that can lead to broader societal change. In conclusion, my upbringing in Philadelphia has profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The city's diversity, coupled with the challenges I faced, instilled in me a deep sense of empathy, resilience, and determination. These qualities have shaped my passion for social work and business, guiding me toward a career where I can make a meaningful impact by helping others and driving positive change.
    Maida Brkanovic Memorial Scholarship
As a first-generation student with Vietnamese immigrant parents, my journey has been a profound exploration of identity, expectations, and self-expression. Navigating life as a recent immigrant’s child and dealing with the pressures associated with being a first-generation student has deeply influenced my beliefs about life, shaping my understanding of perseverance, self-acceptance, and advocacy. Growing up, the weight of the “model minority” myth was a constant presence in my life. This stereotype, which suggests that all Asian Americans are inherently successful, hardworking, and academically driven, created unrealistic expectations for me. During middle school, I internalized these expectations, striving to embody the ideal image of success. The pressure to excel academically and conform to these stereotypes often overshadowed my own desires and interests. I felt compelled to adhere to a predefined mold, which meant suppressing parts of my identity and not expressing my true self. When high school began, I struggled to meet these expectations. My academic performance did not align with the idealized standards that had been set for me, and this discrepancy left me feeling disheartened and discouraged. For a period, I questioned my worth and felt like I was failing both myself and the expectations that were imposed upon me. It was during this time of struggle that I found solace and a sense of purpose in an unexpected place: dance. Becoming a dance instructor for my school’s team marked a pivotal moment in my life. Dance became a sanctuary where I could express myself freely, away from the rigid constraints of academic expectations. Through dance, I discovered a way to channel my emotions and experiences into something constructive and personally fulfilling. This creative outlet not only allowed me to connect with my passions but also helped me build confidence and resilience. As I continued to explore my interests, I was drawn to community activism. Through these activities, I realized that my identity and experiences as a first-generation student were not limitations but sources of strength and perspective. My background taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability. I learned that success is not solely defined by conforming to external expectations but by finding personal fulfillment and contributing meaningfully to my community. These experiences have profoundly shaped my beliefs about life. I have come to understand that authenticity and self-expression are crucial for personal growth. The journey from feeling confined by stereotypes to embracing my unique voice and passions has reinforced the value of staying true to oneself. Moreover, my involvement in community activism has underscored the significance of advocating for equity and justice, particularly for marginalized communities. It has shown me that meaningful change often starts with individuals who are willing to stand up for what they believe in. Being a first-generation student has also instilled in me a deep appreciation for education as a tool for empowerment and opportunity. Despite the challenges I faced, I have come to value education not just as a means to meet societal expectations but as a path to self-discovery and personal achievement. In summary, my experience as a first-generation student of Vietnamese immigrant parents has profoundly influenced my beliefs about life. The pressures of the model minority myth and the challenges of meeting external expectations have led me to value authenticity, perseverance, and advocacy. Embracing my passions, such as dance and community activism, has helped me forge a path that aligns with my true self and allows me to contribute positively to my community. Through these experiences, I have learned that the most meaningful achievements are those that resonate with one’s genuine identity and values.

I am passionate about carving out a successful career in business while nurturing my personal passions. My journey has been shaped significantly by my identity as a bisexual person with Vietnamese immigrant parents. Growing up, accepting my sexuality was challenging due to cultural expectations and familial norms. However, I have realized that the validation I need most is from myself, not from others. This self-acceptance has empowered me to pursue my dreams with confidence and resilience. From a young age, I have been deeply interested in dance. It serves as a vital outlet for my self-expression, allowing me to explore and communicate my emotions in ways that words alone cannot. Dance has provided a sense of freedom and identity, helping me navigate my complex feelings and assert my individuality. In addition, my involvement in community activism has been a cornerstone of my life. Through activism, I work to uplift and amplify the voices of marginalized individuals, creating spaces where people like me can feel seen and heard. This work is deeply fulfilling, as it mirrors the support and encouragement I seek for myself and others. My ambition to pursue a business career is driven by a desire for financial stability and the ability to support my family, who have struggled with economic hardships. By obtaining a degree in business, I aim to build a secure future for myself and provide financial support to my family, alleviating some of the burdens they have faced. Achieving financial stability will not only enable me to pursue my passions more freely but also allow me to contribute to my community in meaningful ways. The money from this opportunity would be used to pay for my college tuition, which is crucial for my goal of becoming a business major. A college education is essential for equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the business world. By investing in my education, I am investing in a future where I can balance my career aspirations with my personal values and passions. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, my goals and dreams have been shaped by both the challenges and strengths that come with my identity. Navigating cultural expectations and personal acceptance has strengthened my resolve and driven me to seek success not only for myself but also for those who face similar struggles. My experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to creating inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive. In essence, my journey is one of self-discovery and determination. Pursuing a career in business while maintaining my passion for dance and activism reflects my desire to build a life that harmonizes personal fulfillment with professional success. The financial support will be instrumental in achieving these goals, allowing me to make a positive impact on my life and the lives of those around me. By continuing Coco’s legacy, I hope to honor the values of resilience, self-expression, and community empowerment that have guided me along this path.

Facing significant adversity is a journey that often shapes one’s identity and future. As a first-generation Asian American, my path has been fraught with challenges, particularly due to language barriers, financial hardships, and the weight of family expectations. These obstacles have tested my resilience but also provided invaluable lessons that have shaped my current approach to life and career aspirations. Growing up in an immigrant family, the language barrier between my parents and me was a significant challenge. My parents, who were determined to provide a better life for our family, faced difficulties securing stable employment due to their limited English proficiency. This led to financial strain and a constant struggle to make ends meet. The burden of these financial challenges was not just on my parents but extended to me, as I navigated the pressure of academic success and the desire to support my family. One major obstacle was balancing my schoolwork with the need to contribute to the household. Financial constraints meant I had to take on part-time jobs while maintaining high academic performance. This juggling act was further complicated by the language barrier, as I had to bridge communication gaps with teachers and school administrators who were often unaware of my family’s situation. The stress of this balancing act could have easily derailed my goals, but I chose to channel my energy into activities that provided both relief and purpose. Dance became my sanctuary and a powerful outlet for coping with stress. It offered a creative escape with a sense of achievement and discipline that fueled my perseverance. Through dance, I learned the value of dedication and the importance of maintaining focus even when faced with setbacks. Additionally, education became a pivotal tool for overcoming our financial hardships. I recognized that a solid education was my gateway to better opportunities and a pathway to a career that could eventually provide financial stability for my family. My motivation was deeply intertwined with the desire to honor my parents’ sacrifices. Their relentless efforts to build a new life in a foreign land inspired me to push through adversity. I realized that dwelling on our hardships would not serve us; instead, I chose to see these challenges as stepping stones toward a brighter future. The sacrifices my parents made were not obstacles but rather the foundation upon which I could build my aspirations. This perspective shifted my focus from mere survival to actively pursuing success. The lessons learned from this journey have had a profound impact on my current life. I have developed a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by my parents and understand the significance of their struggles. This appreciation has motivated me to excel in my career ambitions, with the goal of not only achieving personal success but also providing for my family and repaying their generosity. My experiences have instilled in me a resilience that drives me to face challenges with optimism and determination. In essence, the adversity I faced has shaped my identity and approach to life. As I pursue my career goals, I am guided by the lessons learned from my journey: to value my family’s sacrifices, to leverage my education and passions as tools for overcoming challenges, and to remain committed to giving back and supporting those who have supported me.

Lindsey Vonn ‘GREAT Starts With GRIT’ Scholarship
Grit means having the passion and perseverance to push through tough times, and as a dance instructor, I've had plenty of chances to show this mindset. My journey has been full of challenges that tested my determination, but each obstacle has only made me more committed to my craft and my students. Criticism is a big part of the dance world. As a dancer, hearing feedback can be hard to take. Early in my career, criticism often made me doubt myself. Instead of letting it get me down, I saw it as a way to grow. I took each piece of feedback and used it to improve my skills. Not only did this resilience make me a better dancer but it showed my students how important it is to learn from criticism. When I became an instructor, I faced the challenge of giving criticism. It was a tricky balance between being honest and kind. I wanted to help my students improve without discouraging them. I developed a way of giving feedback that was both constructive and positive. I would point out their strengths before discussing areas they could work on, so they felt motivated to improve. This created a supportive environment where students felt safe to make mistakes and learn from them. Confidence didn't come naturally to me. I often doubted my abilities, especially when comparing myself to other talented dancers. Over time, I learned that confidence comes from consistent practice and believing in yourself. I worked hard to improve my skills and celebrated small achievements along the way. This journey of building confidence inspired my students, showing them that confidence is something you build over time. One of the hardest parts of being an instructor is turning down dancers who aren't ready for performances. It's a delicate task that requires honesty and compassion. I always approached these conversations carefully, explaining why they weren't ready and giving them improvement tips. I reassured them that with dedication, their time would come. By handling these situations gently, I kept their trust and respect, and many came back stronger and more prepared. Being a dance instructor has also meant facing my own insecurities. Teaching others forced me to confront my fears and vulnerabilities. I had to be open about my experiences and mistakes, showing my students that everyone makes errors and that it's part of learning. This openness created a bond between us, fostering an environment of mutual trust and growth. Through these experiences, I've shown a gritty mindset, facing each challenge with determination and passion. My journey has taught me that grit isn't about never falling but about always getting back up. It's about embracing criticism, building confidence, making tough decisions, and overcoming insecurities. As a dance instructor, I strive to teach these values to my students, helping them become better dancers and resilient individuals ready to face any challenge life throws their way.
