1. Personal Inspiration for Nursing
My inspiration for pursuing a career in nursing comes from both my personal experiences and the deep desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I have seen firsthand how powerful compassionate care can be, not just in healing the body, but in restoring hope during some of life’s most difficult moments. Experiencing loss within my family and navigating my own struggles with mental health shaped my understanding of how vulnerable people can feel in healthcare settings. Those experiences didn’t discourage me, they strengthened my resolve to become the kind of nurse who shows up with empathy, patience, and genuine understanding.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse, I have had the opportunity to work closely with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those facing addiction and mental health challenges. These experiences have reinforced my passion for advocacy, especially for individuals who often feel overlooked or misunderstood. I’ve learned that nursing is not just about clinical skill, it’s about connection, trust, and meeting people where they are.
Being a mother has also played a significant role in my journey. My children inspire me daily to keep pushing forward, to grow, and to build a future that not only supports my family but also contributes positively to my community. Completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a crucial step in expanding my ability to lead, educate, and provide higher-quality care.
Ultimately, I am pursuing nursing because I believe in the impact of human connection. I want to be a steady presence in moments of uncertainty, an advocate for those without a voice, and a nurse who never forgets the person behind the diagnosis.
2. Meaning of “Human Touch” in Nursing
To me, the phrase “human touch” in nursing goes far beyond physical contact. It represents the emotional, psychological, and compassionate connection that forms between a nurse and a patient. It is the ability to truly see someone, to listen without judgment, and to respond with empathy and respect. In a healthcare system that can often feel rushed and task-oriented, human touch is what brings care back to its most meaningful foundation: treating people as individuals, not just patients.
Human touch can be as simple as sitting at the bedside for an extra minute, explaining something in a way a patient understands, or acknowledging their fears instead of dismissing them. It is found in small moments such as maintaining eye contact, remembering a patient’s preferred name, or offering reassurance during uncertainty. These actions may seem minor, but they have a profound impact on how patients experience care.
In my nursing experience, especially working with individuals struggling with mental health and substance use, I’ve seen how powerful human connection can be. Many patients come in feeling judged, guarded, or hopeless. When a nurse approaches them with genuine compassion and respect, it can break down barriers and build trust. That trust is essential not only for emotional healing but also for improving compliance with treatment and overall outcomes.
Human touch also plays a critical role in patient safety. When patients feel comfortable and heard, they are more likely to communicate openly about symptoms, concerns, or changes in their condition. This allows nurses to respond more effectively and provide better care. It transforms the patient from a passive recipient into an active participant in their health journey.
Ultimately, human touch is what separates good care from exceptional care. It reminds patients that they are not alone, even in their most vulnerable moments. As a nurse, I strive to carry this with me in every interaction because sometimes, the most healing thing we can offer isn’t found in a medication or procedure, but in how we make someone feel.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has shaped not only my career path, but also the way I see people, relationships, and the world around me. It is something I have experienced from both sides, personally and professionally, and those experiences have given me a deeper understanding of what it truly means to care for others.
As a nurse working with individuals struggling with mental health and substance use, I have witnessed firsthand how heavy stigma can be. I have cared for patients in some of their most vulnerable moments such as when they feel judged, misunderstood, or invisible. Many of them are not just battling addiction or mental illness, but also shame, trauma, and a lack of support. In those moments, I try to be more than just a nurse. I try to be someone who listens, who doesn’t rush, and who reminds them that they are still worthy of care and dignity.
But my connection to mental health is not only professional, it is deeply personal.
I have struggled with depression and have had moments in my life where I felt overwhelmed and hopeless. I have also experienced the devastating loss of family members to suicide. Those losses changed me in ways that are difficult to fully put into words. They left behind questions, pain, and a deep awareness of how silent suffering can be. They also showed me how important it is to truly see people, not just on the surface, but beneath it.
Choosing to seek therapy for my own mental health was one of the most important steps I have taken. It taught me that strength is not about holding everything in, but about being willing to face it. It helped me understand my own emotions, develop healthier coping strategies, and begin to heal. That experience has made me a better nurse, a better mother, and a stronger advocate. It allows me to connect with my patients in a more genuine way because I understand, on a personal level, how difficult it can be to ask for help.
These experiences have shaped my goals in a profound way. I am committed to continuing my education in nursing so I can expand my role in mental health care and advocacy. I want to be part of breaking the stigma that keeps so many people silent. Mental health should be treated with the same urgency, compassion, and respect as physical health, and I want to be a voice that helps move that forward.
They have also shaped my relationships. I am more patient, more understanding, and more intentional with the people in my life. As a mother, I am especially mindful of creating an environment where my children feel safe expressing their emotions. I want them to grow up knowing that it is okay to not be okay, and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
My understanding of the world has changed as well. I no longer see people simply as their behaviors or diagnoses. I see stories, experiences, and struggles that may not be visible. I understand that what someone is going through mentally can be just as real and life-threatening as any physical illness. That perspective has given me both empathy and purpose.
Destigmatizing mental health is not just something I believe in, it is something I live every day. Through my work, my personal journey, and my willingness to speak openly about these experiences, I hope to help others feel less alone. I want people to know that healing is possible, that their lives matter, and that there is no shame in needing support.
My journey has not been easy, but it has given me clarity, compassion, and a strong sense of purpose. It has shaped the nurse I am today and the nurse I am continuing to become. I will continue to use both my voice and my experiences to advocate for change, to support those who are struggling, and to contribute to a healthcare system that treats mental health with the respect and urgency it deserves.
Minority Single Mother Scholarship
My journey as a single mother pursuing my education has been anything but easy, but it has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Every step I’ve taken has been for something bigger than myself, but for my children, my future, and the kind of life I want to build for all of us.
The hardest part has been carrying everything at once. There are days when I go from being a nurse, to a student, to a mom, without ever really getting a break in between. I’ve studied late at night after my boys fall asleep, woken up early to finish assignments, and pushed through exhaustion because I knew quitting was never an option. Being a single parent means there’s no one to fall back on when things get overwhelming, you just keep going. And I have.
But in the middle of all that challenge, there has also been so much fulfillment. My children are my greatest motivation. They see me working hard, showing up, and not giving up, even when it’s difficult. I’m not just earning a degree, I’m showing them what strength, resilience, and determination look like in real life. I want them to grow up knowing that their circumstances don’t define them, and that they are capable of creating something better for themselves.
Pursuing my education has also given me a deeper sense of purpose. As a nurse, I have the opportunity to care for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. That responsibility means everything to me. My experiences, both personal and professional, have shaped the way I connect with others. I understand what it feels like to struggle, to feel unseen, and to keep going anyway. Because of that, I bring empathy and compassion into every interaction.
Being a minority and a single mother has added its own layers of challenge. There are moments where it feels like the odds are stacked higher, where resources feel limited, and where balancing everything feels overwhelming. But those challenges have also made me stronger, more focused, and more determined to succeed, not just for myself, but for my family.
Furthering my education is how I plan to uplift both myself and my children. Earning my BSN will open doors to better opportunities, greater financial stability, and the ability to grow into leadership roles within nursing. More importantly, it will allow me to provide a more secure and stable life for my boys, one where they can focus on their dreams without the same struggles.
This scholarship would help ease the financial stress that comes with being a single parent in school, allowing me to focus more on my education and less on how to make everything stretch. It would give me the opportunity to keep moving forward without having to sacrifice time that I could be spending either studying or being present with my children.
My journey hasn’t been perfect, but it has been real. It has been built on long days, hard choices, and a commitment to never give up. I am proud of how far I’ve come, and I am determined to keep going for myself, for my children, and for the future I know we deserve.

Women in Nursing Scholarship
Becoming a nurse was never just a career choice for me, it was a calling shaped by resilience, responsibility, and love. As a single mother raising three boys, I learned early what it means to show up every day with strength, even when life feels overwhelming. My journey into nursing grew from those moments, especially when caring for others wasn’t optional, but essential.
Working as a nurse has allowed me to transform compassion into action. I have cared for patients in vulnerable, life-altering moments such as those struggling with addiction, chronic illness, and emotional pain. These experiences have deepened my understanding that healing goes far beyond physical treatment. It requires patience, trust, and the ability to truly see someone, even when they feel invisible. I strive to be that nurse, the one who listens without judgment, advocates fiercely, and creates a safe space for healing.
My role as a mother has been my greatest influence. My boys watch everything I do, and I carry the responsibility of showing them what perseverance looks like. They have seen me work full-time, attend school, and continue pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing despite obstacles. There have been long nights, early mornings, and sacrifices, but every step forward is for them. I want them to understand that no matter where you start, you can build something meaningful through hard work and heart.
Leadership has also become a defining part of my journey. As a nurse, I naturally stepped into leadership roles where I support my team, advocate for patients, and help create a positive, collaborative environment. I believe leadership in nursing is not about authority, it’s about presence, accountability, and compassion. It’s about lifting others up, especially during challenging moments, and ensuring that both patients and staff feel valued and supported.
My experiences have also shaped my passion for working with underserved and vulnerable populations. I have witnessed firsthand how lack of access, stigma, and limited resources can impact patient outcomes. These moments have strengthened my commitment to being not only a caregiver, but also an advocate for equitable healthcare. I want to be part of a system that meets people where they are and provides care that is both accessible and respectful.
Pursuing my BSN is the next step in expanding my knowledge, strengthening my clinical judgment, and growing as a leader in nursing. This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of continuing my education as a single mother, but it would also allow me to focus more fully on becoming the nurse and leader my patients, my community, and my children deserve.
Nursing, to me, is more than a profession, it is a purpose rooted in compassion, resilience, and service. Every challenge I have faced has prepared me to care more deeply, lead more effectively, and advocate more fiercely. I am committed to continuing this journey, not only for myself, but for the countless lives I will have the privilege to impact.
Law Family Single Parent Scholarship
As a single mother, my journey through higher education has been shaped by resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment to my three sons. Every step I take toward earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing is not just for me, but most importantly for them. They are the reason I continue to push forward, even on the days when I feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin.
Balancing full-time work as a nurse, stepping into a leadership role, and raising three boys has required constant sacrifice. There are nights I study after they’ve fallen asleep and mornings I wake up already feeling behind. But my sons see it all. They see the effort, the discipline, and the determination. I want them to grow up knowing that no matter how difficult life becomes, you keep showing up. You keep trying. You don’t give up.
Working as a nurse has deeply influenced my purpose. I care for individuals during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, and in those moments, I am reminded how important compassion and advocacy truly are. In my current role, I strive to lead with kindness, support my team, and create an environment where both patients and staff feel valued. I have learned that leadership is not about authority, it is about service, accountability, and lifting others up.
At the same time, being a single parent has given me a unique understanding of what it means to feel overwhelmed and unsupported. I see that reflected in many of the patients I care for, especially those facing addiction, mental health struggles, and limited access to resources. These experiences have strengthened my desire to be more than just a nurse. I want to be an advocate, a voice, and a source of stability for those who need it most.
My goal is to continue advancing my education so I can expand my impact—not only within healthcare systems, but within my community. I hope to support and mentor other single parents and nursing students, showing them that their circumstances do not limit their potential. Representation matters, and I want others to see that success is possible, even when the path is difficult.
Being a single mother has challenged me in every way, but it has also given me my greatest strength and purpose. This journey is about more than earning a degree—it is about breaking cycles, creating opportunities, and building a future my children can be proud of.
This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of continuing my education, but it would allow me to keep moving forward—for my sons, my patients, and my community.
