For many years, one of my greatest mental health challenges was learning how to cope with painful emotions without turning to substances. Addiction affected the way I viewed myself, handled stress, and responded to difficult situations. During the hardest period of my life, I struggled with shame, anxiety, and the belief that I had ruined my future. My substance use contributed to my children entering foster care twice, which intensified my guilt and made recovery feel almost impossible. However, I eventually realized that continuing down the same path would only create more pain for my children and me. I entered treatment, began participating in recovery programs, and slowly learned healthier ways to manage my emotions. Recovery required much more than simply stopping the use of drugs and alcohol. I had to examine my past, accept responsibility for my choices, rebuild relationships, and learn how to ask for help. I also had to challenge the negative thoughts telling me that I was not capable of changing. Over time, counseling, peer support, education, and the recovery community helped me understand that needing help is not a weakness. I have now been clean and sober for more than seven years. Although I have made tremendous progress, caring for my mental health remains an ongoing process. I still experience periods of overthinking, anxiety, and self-doubt, especially when balancing college, work, parenting, and the responsibilities of building a nonprofit organization. I work through these challenges by maintaining routines, walking, practicing yoga, writing, reaching out for support, and reminding myself of everything I have already overcome. I am also earning my bachelor’s degree in psychology, which has helped me better understand mental health, trauma, addiction, and the importance of compassionate, evidence-based support. Moving forward, I plan to use both my education and lived experience to support others. I founded Tri-State Recovery Outreach to assist people experiencing substance use and homelessness in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. Through outreach, harm-reduction supplies, hygiene kits, treatment navigation, and recovery resources, I want people to know that they are worthy of help regardless of where they are in their journey. I understand how powerful it can be when someone sees the person behind the addiction rather than judging the behavior. I will also generate awareness by speaking openly about recovery and mental health whenever it is safe and appropriate. Sharing honest stories can challenge stigma and show that recovery is possible. Whether I continue into counseling, nonprofit leadership, or combine both paths, my goal is to create spaces where people feel respected, understood, and comfortable asking for help. My experiences have taught me that mental health challenges do not make someone broken. With compassion, opportunity, and the right support, people can rebuild their lives—and I want to help make that support easier to find.

HMy educational goal is to complete my bachelor’s degree in psychology and continue building a career centered on helping people. I am currently on track to graduate in April, which is an accomplishment that means more to me than earning a degree. My education represents the life I have rebuilt, the example I want to set for my children, and my commitment to turning difficult experiences into something that can benefit others. I have always known that I wanted to do something related to psychology. I am interested in understanding why people think, feel, and behave the way they do, especially when they are experiencing addiction, trauma, homelessness, or mental health challenges. As someone in long-term recovery, I understand how powerful it can be when another person offers support without judgment. My experiences have given me compassion, but my education is giving me the knowledge and professional skills needed to use that compassion responsibly. When I began my degree, I imagined that I would eventually work directly in counseling or addiction treatment. That remains a possibility, and I am considering pursuing a master’s degree that could prepare me for work in the mental health field. However, founding Tri-State Recovery Outreach has introduced me to another possible direction. My nonprofit serves individuals experiencing homelessness and substance use challenges by providing outreach supplies, recovery connections, and information about community resources. Starting the organization has shown me that I am also interested in nonprofit leadership and the business side of helping people. I enjoy developing programs, forming community partnerships, pursuing grants, organizing volunteers, and finding practical ways to meet unmet needs. I am now considering whether my future belongs primarily in counseling, nonprofit management, or a position that combines both areas. I may not know my exact career title yet, but I know the purpose behind my work: I want to help people feel seen, supported, and capable of creating a better future. My long-term goal is to continue my education after completing my bachelor’s degree. I want to choose a graduate program that will strengthen my ability to lead an effective organization, provide ethical and informed support, and advocate for people who are often overlooked. Before making that decision, I plan to carefully explore programs in counseling, psychology, human services, and nonprofit leadership. I do not view this uncertainty as a lack of direction. Instead, it reflects how much I have learned about the many different ways I can serve others. Receiving this scholarship would help me remain focused on completing my degree while balancing school, employment, parenting, and the development of my nonprofit. For many years, being a single mother shaped nearly every part of my life. I was responsible for raising my children, supporting our household, making difficult decisions, and continuing to move forward even when I felt exhausted or uncertain. There were many times when I had to place my own needs and dreams aside because my children needed me. Although the experience was challenging, it taught me resilience, independence, patience, and the meaning of unconditional love. Being a single mother also showed me how difficult it can be for one person to carry the responsibilities of an entire household. I had to become the provider, caregiver, advocate, and source of emotional support for my children. One of my sons is autistic, so I also learned how to advocate for a child with unique needs and abilities. I did not always have all the answers, but I learned to keep searching for resources, asking questions, and standing up for my children. My experiences helped me understand that families do not need to look traditional to be loving, strong, and worthy of support. After spending a long time raising my children on my own, I finally found a good man who accepts both me and my children. My fiancé, Michael, does not treat my children as burdens or as responsibilities he was forced to accept. He recognizes that they are an essential part of who I am. He supports their needs, celebrates their accomplishments, and stands beside me during difficult moments. His presence has shown me what a healthy partnership can look like. Michael also supports my dreams. After years of feeling as though I had to manage everything alone, having someone believe in my goals has made an enormous difference. He encourages me as I work toward my bachelor’s degree in psychology and prepare to pursue a master’s degree. He also supports my work as the founder of Tri-State Recovery Outreach, a nonprofit created to assist people experiencing homelessness and substance use challenges. Together, we are building a blended family based on acceptance, respect, recovery, and hope. My past has strongly influenced my future goals. I know what it feels like to struggle, to rebuild a life, and to wonder whether a better future is possible. I also know how powerful it can be when someone believes in you. I want to use my education, lived experience, compassion, and determination to give that same hope to others. In the future, I see myself working in mental health, addiction recovery, nonprofit leadership, or a combination of these areas. I want to help people recognize that their current circumstances do not have to determine the rest of their lives. Alzheimer’s Disease: A Community Impact Although Alzheimer’s disease has not directly affected my immediate family, I have seen how dementia-related illnesses affect individuals, caregivers, and entire communities. Alzheimer’s disease does not only cause memory loss. It can gradually change a person’s ability to communicate, make decisions, recognize loved ones, and complete everyday activities. At the same time, family members often become caregivers while trying to manage their own jobs, finances, health, and emotional well-being. Learning about these challenges through my psychology education has taught me that dementia is not simply an individual medical condition; it is a community issue that requires compassion, education, and support. One of the most heartbreaking aspects of Alzheimer’s disease is how it changes relationships. Family members may experience grief even while their loved one is still physically present. A spouse may slowly become responsible for every household decision, while an adult child may find themselves caring for the parent who once cared for them. As the disease progresses, the person may no longer remember important experiences, recognize familiar faces, or understand why assistance is necessary. Behavioral and personality changes can also be difficult for families, especially when they do not understand that these behaviors are symptoms of the illness rather than deliberate actions. Caregiving can be exhausting and isolating. Many caregivers sacrifice sleep, employment opportunities, financial security, and time with other family members. Some may feel guilty when they become frustrated or when they begin considering professional care. In rural and smaller communities like mine, families may face additional barriers because specialized healthcare, respite care, transportation, and support programs are not always nearby. These limitations can leave caregivers feeling as though they must handle everything alone. My own experiences have helped me understand why dignity and compassionate support are so important. I am a psychology student, a mother, a person in long-term recovery, and the founder of Tri-State Recovery Outreach. Through these roles, I have learned that people should never be reduced to a diagnosis or to the challenges they are experiencing. A person living with Alzheimer’s disease remains a complete human being with a personal history, emotions, preferences, and a need for meaningful connection. Even when someone cannot remember a name or conversation, that person can still experience comfort, fear, loneliness, love, and belonging. My recovery has also taught me that families are deeply affected when someone they love experiences a serious condition. Although addiction and Alzheimer’s disease are very different, both can create confusion, grief, stigma, and major changes in family roles. I know what it feels like to need patience and support rather than judgment. This understanding influences how I view people living with dementia and their caregivers. Families need practical assistance, but they also need others to listen without criticizing their decisions or minimizing their exhaustion. I have learned that communities can make an important difference. Education can help people recognize early warning signs and understand how to communicate with someone experiencing cognitive decline. Caregiver support groups can reduce isolation and give families a safe place to share their experiences. Respite services can allow caregivers to rest, attend appointments, or spend time with their children. Businesses, healthcare providers, human service organizations, and community members can also learn how to respond respectfully when a person with dementia appears confused or overwhelmed. This issue has strengthened my desire to continue my education in psychology and eventually pursue a master’s degree. My goal is to work in the mental health and human services field while continuing to develop my nonprofit organization. I want to advocate for people whose needs are often misunderstood or overlooked. Whether I am helping someone affected by addiction, homelessness, mental illness, disability, or dementia, I want my work to be grounded in empathy, dignity, and the belief that every individual deserves appropriate support. What I have learned most from studying Alzheimer’s disease is that compassion is not only an emotion—it must lead to action. It means checking on a caregiver, helping a family locate services, remaining patient when someone repeats a question, and seeing the person beyond the illness. Alzheimer’s disease may affect memory, but it should never erase a person’s value. As I continue my education and service to my community, I hope to help create systems in which individuals and families do not have to face life-changing challenges alone.

Addiction took me to places I never imagined my life would go. What began as substance use eventually affected nearly every part of my life. It affected my relationships, my stability, my confidence, and most painfully, my ability to be the mother I wanted to be. During that time, I was not thinking about college, a career, starting a nonprofit, or how I could make a difference in my community. Much of my life revolved around surviving one day at a time. One of the hardest consequences of my addiction was seeing how my choices affected my children. There was a time when two of my sons were placed in foster care. Losing that everyday role in their lives forced me to face what addiction had taken from me. Eventually, I reached a point where I had to decide whether I was going to continue down the same path or fight for a different life. I chose to fight. Treatment gave me a foundation, but getting sober was only the beginning. Recovery required me to take responsibility for my choices, rebuild relationships, regain custody of my children, and learn how to live without relying on substances. I had to rebuild trust and, in many ways, rebuild myself. There were difficult days, but every step forward showed me that my past did not have to determine my future. In August 2026, I celebrated seven years clean and sober. When I compare my life today with where I was seven years ago, the difference is something I could not have imagined while I was struggling with addiction. Today, I am present for my family, pursuing my bachelor's degree in psychology, planning to continue into graduate school, and working toward becoming a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I am also the founder and Executive Director of Tri-State Recovery Outreach, a nonprofit focused on helping individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and recovery. Starting this organization has given me another way to turn my experiences into something meaningful. I know how powerful it can be when someone treats you like a person instead of judging you by the worst period of your life. I want the people we serve to know that someone sees them, believes they have value, and believes change is possible. My education is an important part of how I plan to expand that mission. Lived experience gives me compassion and an understanding of addiction that cannot always be learned from a textbook, but education gives me the knowledge and professional skills to turn that understanding into effective support. Addiction once made my future feel incredibly small. Recovery gave that future back to me, and education is helping me decide what I want to do with it. I cannot change my past, but I can use what I have lived through to help someone else believe that change is possible. My goal is not simply to build a successful career. I want to build a life and career that make the road to recovery a little easier for the person coming behind me.

Selected Passage: “Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things.” —Epictetus, The Enchiridion, Section 5, translated by Elizabeth Carter Epictetus’s central argument is that genuine freedom begins when people distinguish an event from the meaning they assign to it. He is not claiming that painful experiences are imaginary or unimportant. Instead, he argues that circumstances gain much of their emotional power through the judgments, expectations, and beliefs people attach to them. By learning to examine those interpretations, a person can respond deliberately rather than being completely controlled by fear, anger, shame, or disappointment. The distinction between a “thing” and a “notion” is the foundation of the passage. A thing is an event or circumstance, such as losing a job, experiencing rejection, making a mistake, becoming ill, or being criticized. A notion is the conclusion a person forms about that event. Someone who loses a job may conclude that the loss proves personal failure and that the future is hopeless. The job loss is real, but the belief that nothing good can follow it is an interpretation. Epictetus argues that people often react not only to what happened but also to the story they immediately create about what happened. This idea does not mean individuals should ignore injustice, grief, illness, or trauma. Such an interpretation would make the passage shallow and unnecessarily harsh. Epictetus is not saying that people choose every emotion or deserve their suffering. He is identifying the point at which personal agency can still exist, even when circumstances cannot be changed. A person may not control what has happened, but that person can gradually examine whether the event must permanently determine identity, behavior, or hope. The word “disturbed” is also important. Epictetus does not appear to use it only to describe temporary sadness or fear. He is describing the deeper disruption that occurs when an external event is allowed to control a person’s entire inner life. A painful experience may be unavoidable, but the belief that the experience has destroyed all possibility of meaning can create continuing suffering. By questioning that belief, a person does not erase the original pain. Instead, the person prevents pain from becoming the sole authority over future choices. This teaching is especially meaningful when considered in relation to shame. There may be appointments to attend, services to coordinate, changes in routine to manage, or situations that require my immediate attention. Unexpected disruptions can be especially difficult for him, so I must consider how changes in my work or school schedule may affect his sense of stability. I am proud of his strengths and the person he is, but I also recognize that providing the support he needs can make balancing college and employment more complicated. Parenting responsibilities do not pause when an assignment is due or an exam is approaching. I may intend to spend an evening studying but need to help one of my children, address an unexpected situation, manage a household problem, or provide emotional support. I often complete assignments late at night, early in the morning, or during whatever quiet time I can find. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses affect far more than memory. They can change communication, behavior, independence, relationships, and the roles people hold within their families. Although I have not served as the primary caregiver for a close relative with dementia, my education in psychology and my experiences within my community have helped me understand how deeply these illnesses affect individuals, caregivers, and entire support systems. I have learned that dementia is not only a medical condition; it is also an emotional, social, and community issue. In a rural community, the effects of Alzheimer’s disease can be especially challenging. Families may have limited access to neurologists, memory-care programs, transportation, respite services, and affordable long-term care. A spouse or adult child may gradually become a full-time caregiver while also working, raising children, and managing other responsibilities. Because the changes often occur slowly, families may not immediately recognize what is happening or know when to ask for help. Early symptoms can sometimes be misunderstood as ordinary aging, stubbornness, carelessness, or mood changes. A person may forget appointments, repeat questions, become confused while completing familiar tasks, or have difficulty finding the right words. These changes can be frustrating or frightening for everyone involved. Family members may feel impatient and then guilty about that frustration. They may also experience grief while their loved one is still physically present because familiar parts of the relationship are changing. One of the most important things I have learned is that a person living with dementia remains a person worthy of dignity, respect, patience, and meaningful connection. Alzheimer’s disease shows why healthcare cannot focus only on the individual diagnosis. Families need clear information about what to expect, how to communicate effectively, how to plan for future care, and where to find assistance. They also need emotional support as they adjust to changing responsibilities and grieve the relationship they once knew. This understanding will influence my future career in mental health counseling. I hope to work with individuals and families affected by addiction, trauma, mental health conditions, disability, and other major life changes. Although dementia care may not be my primary specialty, I may counsel caregivers who feel overwhelmed, guilty, angry, or heartbroken. I want to create a space where they can express those emotions without judgment. I would also help connect them with appropriate medical professionals, caregiver organizations, respite programs, and community resources. My work with Tri-State Recovery Outreach has also taught me the value of accessible information and strong community connections. People cannot use resources they do not know exist. In the future, I hope to help create and distribute simple resource guides that include local caregiver support, transportation, counseling, aging services, meal programs, and crisis assistance. In rural areas, even a clear list of phone numbers and eligibility requirements can reduce the burden on a family already facing an overwhelming situation. What draws me to PMDD and PME is the intersection of mental health, physical health, and the experience of not always being fully heard by healthcare professionals. As I have gotten older, I have experienced changes in my menstrual cycle along with mood swings, disrupted sleep, fatigue, headaches, and other symptoms associated with perimenopause. I am not claiming that I have PMDD or PME, but these experiences have made me more aware of how hormonal changes can affect a person’s emotional well-being, relationships, work, and daily functioning. They have also shown me how easily serious symptoms can be minimized as ordinary stress or something a person should simply tolerate. I am currently earning my bachelor’s degree in psychology and plan to continue my education in mental health counseling. My lived experience with addiction recovery has already taught me that mental and physical health cannot be separated. In five days, I will celebrate seven years clean, and throughout my recovery, I have learned the importance of recognizing patterns, identifying triggers, and receiving care that considers the whole person. I believe the same person-centered approach is essential for people experiencing PMDD or PME. My specific focus would be improving recognition of cycle-related symptoms in mental health settings. PMDD can be mistaken for another mood disorder, while PME can be overlooked when an existing condition such as depression or anxiety becomes significantly worse before menstruation. If clinicians do not ask about menstrual-cycle timing, patients may receive incomplete assessments or treatments that do not address the pattern behind their symptoms. One concrete way my future work could help is by incorporating a brief menstrual mental-health screening process into routine client intake and follow-up appointments. For clients who menstruate, I would ask whether their depression, anxiety, irritability, hopelessness, or other symptoms regularly change before or during their periods. When a cycle-related pattern is suspected, I would encourage prospective daily symptom tracking for at least two menstrual cycles using a tool such as the Daily Record of Severity of Problems. Research indicates that prospective daily ratings across two cycles are important for distinguishing PMDD from PME and noncyclical mental health symptoms. I would use the information to help clients communicate clearly with their primary-care provider, gynecologist, or psychiatrist. With the client’s consent, I would also support coordination among providers so that mental health symptoms and reproductive health are not treated as unrelated concerns. When symptoms include severe depression, hopelessness, or suicidal thoughts, immediate safety assessment and crisis support would remain essential. I also founded Tri-State Recovery Outreach to assist people experiencing addiction and homelessness in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. As the organization develops, I hope to incorporate educational materials about mental health conditions that are frequently misunderstood, including PMDD and PME. My goal is not to diagnose these conditions outside my professional role. It is to help people recognize concerning patterns, document their experiences, and seek informed care.
