Obaba said, “After a thousand years of darkness, he will come, clad in blue and surrounded by fields of gold to restore mankind's connection of the Earth that was destroyed." A prophecy that every true nature lover would surely wish referred to them. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is about a girl living in an environmental dystopia. While I have seen many anime series and films, this movie is the only one that truly captivates my heart. I think we all connect with movies that have characters akin to ourselves. Sometimes we connect on a surface level because of similar appearance. Other times, we connect on a deeper level because of similar personalities and/or values. I see myself in Nausicaä through her personality and values. Although sweet and soft-spoken at times, we can be assertive and stubborn about sticking to things that relate to things we care about (loved ones and the environment). Sometimes, our love for the environment conflicts with others' opinions, especially on animals. For example, one time Nausicaä tries to protect a baby Ohm from being killed by her village. I have had many times where I have prevented “undesirable” animals like insects, snakes, and spiders from being killed. Other times, like Nausicaä, I am unable to successfully protect them and wonder what has the animal done to deserve death. In other words, we have a strong connection with animals, in particular, and wish to connect others to them. We also wish to care for them. This desire to care for animals and connect people to animals is what drives my schooling and career path. With a general biology degree with an emphasis on wildlife biology, I hope to become a zoo caretaker, a wildlife park ranger, or a wildlife rescue facility worker. In any of these careers, I will be able to care for animals and connect people with animals. Hopefully, through any of these, I can help make the environment a better place by instilling the wonder of nature in people. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is the most captivating anime film because Nausicaä shares some of my personality and values. With a similar desire to care for the environment and connect people with it, I will use my profession to make the environment a better place by instilling the wonder of nature in people. For we are to be stewards of nature.
