Bio

Hello, my name is Kristalynn King. I am a stay-at-home mother to two very adorable little kids. I grew up in the state of Utah and have lived beneath the Rocky Mountains most of my life. There were a few years where a handsome man in a uniform whisked me away, but I talked him into eventually bringing me back home. The thing I am most passionate about is the desire to help survivors of sex trafficking find hope. I am currently a junior attending online classes at St. Andrews University in North Carolina for their degree in Business Administration/ Equine Business Management My goal after completing school is to open up a rehabilitation home for survivors of sex trafficking, a place where these survivors can come and be safe, while they start their journey to rediscovering who they can be. I chose Equine Business Management because the studies that have been done show the survivors of human trafficking respond best to a form of equine therapy. It is my ambition to be able to not only receive funds to finish out my degree at St. Andrews, but to also have enough funds to be able to graduate without the burden of the student loan debt looming over my head. That way every ounce of my knowledge, skill, and time, can go to helping survivors and focusing on their needs in order to prepare them for the adventure that comes after finding yourself again. There is a quote I found when I first began pursuing this dream from Desmond Tutu, it goes, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

Hello, my name is Kristalynn King, but that is a mouthful so Kristy is what I go by. I am a stay-at-home mother to two very adorable little kids, even if I am a little biased towards them, they truly are the greatest things that have ever happened to me. I have grown up in the state of Utah and have lived beneath the Rocky Mountains most of my life. There were a few years where a handsome man in a uniform whisked me away to other places, but I talked him into eventually bringing me back home. The thing I am most passionate about, besides the love for my family, is the desire to help survivors of sex trafficking find hope. I am currently a junior attending online classes at St. Andrews University in North Carolina. I chose St. Andrews because they have a Business Administration degree with a special program in Equine Business Management. My goal after completing school is to open up a rehabilitation home for survivors of sex trafficking. A place where these survivors can come and be safe, and feel accepted while they start their journey to rediscovering who they can be after the horrific act they had to endure. Why I chose Equine Business Management is because there have been studies done that shows the survivors of human trafficking, as well as veterans suffering from PTSD, have the same type of traumas. One of the best therapies found that begins to restore them, is therapy with horses. The survivors will be around each other knowing they have experienced some of the same horrors, but that the horse, the relief, the calm and steadiness the horse brings, is just a step out their front door. Everything about my life right now this moment is finding a way where I can continue striving for my education. My dream is to open a rehabilitation facility for survivors of human trafficking, a place they can come to heal. In order to be able to start this endeavor, a degree is the best road to take. It has been my passion to bring in horses to help people heal. A study has been done showing why horses are the best therapy animals and that is because they can mimic back to you the emotions you are feeling. Having horses as well as a safe place for these survivors I believe is vital in allowing the survivors to find their way back into society in a valuable way. It is my ambition to be able to not only receive funds to finish out my degree at St. Andrews, but to also have enough funds to be able to graduate without the burden of the student loan debt looming over my head. It's 8 p.m. your children are finally bedded down for the night. You never thought you would be able to make it past dinner, but you did. They ate, bathed, brushed, and had their favorite story read to them 5 different times. Their water cup has been refilled twice, and prayers with hugs and kisses given over and over. The night is quiet finally, now is your time to focus. You set to work on your computer because an online study is the only way you can manage to keep life relatively normal. You know you have 4 different forums to reply to, a paper you need to begin researching, and a quiz to take. It's now 2 a.m., you know your children will be up at 7 a.m. on the dot, but if you can just get this last piece of the financial problem figured out and go to bed directly after you will be able to get 4 hours of sleep without the worry of it looming over your head tomorrow. You know going to school to get your degree will provide a better job in the future. You have a dream, a goal, a passion that you are pursuing fervently, but you also know that these young years will not last forever with your children. These are the "important" years, these are the crucial years of child development. Everything is new to them right now, everything your children are experiencing is helping them grow and mature into what society will deem appropriate in their later years of life. Having the guilt of working on school while they sit in front of the tv for the umpteenth time of the Paw Patrol Movie is looked down on by everyone you talk to. So you find yourself in front of your studies at 2 a.m. But while your kids may be watching Paw Patrol, they are also noticing you. This is probably my main goal with continuing education. I have a dream of having a rehabilitation home for survivors of human trafficking, where they can come and be around survivors who have the same kind of story, of life not being kind yet the ability to move forward is crucial. The main characteristic of this center is going to be the opportunity of having horses on the premises where these survivors can interact with them on a therapeutic level. My dream has been for the longest time of finding a way to use horses to help people. Going back to school to finish my degree, it shows my children that no matter what goal/dream you have, no matter how inconvenient it is to work towards that dream, it is always worth it. I believe the lessons they can learn watching their mother pursue her dreams will give them the tenacity to chase theirs when the time comes.

Kayla was excited about the job interview, a traveling sales executive for a major cosmetic line. She was a little confused to be meeting her new boss in a local restaurant, but due to the nature of the job, this did not concern her too much. The interview went very well and at the end, her potential boss took a phone call. “Kayla, this is such good news, that was my supervisor, he just arrived in town and wants to meet you. Would you be available to come with me and have a second interview this soon?” Of course, how could she pass up such an opportunity! She got in his car and was surprised when he traveled to a house not far from the restaurant. When Kayla entered the house, she was grabbed from behind, injected with some drug, and the middle finger of her left hand was tattooed. (Many trafficked victims are tattooed with a symbol representing the owner or trafficker.) I heard about Kayla (name has been changed to protect identity) when I was volunteering for a fundraiser in 2005 for the organization Rescue Her. This story is true and happened in my own hometown of Ogden, Utah. My name is Kristalynn King, and for the last 16 years, I have reflected on this story and how I could make a difference in victims’ lives such as Kayla. “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” - Desmond Tutu. Human trafficking is now the second-largest criminal enterprise in the world. Compare the 9.9 million Africans transported across the Atlantic from the 1500s to the 1800s, to the 27 million people currently enslaved in 2015. More than twice as many people are in bondage in the world today than were taken from Africa during the entire 350 years of the Atlantic slave trade. My goal after completing the Bachelor’s program at St. Andrew’s University will be to open up a rehabilitation center for the survivors of human trafficking called King’s Haven. King’s Haven will specialize in restoration for the survivors of human trafficking. We will provide personalized treatment through the use of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Art Therapy, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Life Coaches, and others. King’s Haven also provides a safe environment to learn life skills needed for survivors to reintegrate into society. Our main focus is on the survivors and allowing them to find their place in this world. A safe environment to learn life skills is an important part of reintegration for the surviving victims. King’s Haven will be a Long-Term Care Facility that will focus on allowing survivors to find their place in this world. An artisan shop, The Hideaway, is part of our program where items that are created by the survivors will be marketed for consumer purchasing, the money that is made from the purchase will be put into a savings account that once the survivors graduate the program will then receive. Due to the sensitive nature and security of the surviving victims, King’s Haven will be a self-sufficient homestead in every way possible. The farm will be a working farm where the survivors learn to work with livestock, ground-to-table meal planning, and other life skills. All these programs will not only help the survivors but will in turn make it possible for King’s Haven to only rely on some outside assistance to operate. Federal Grants, other grants, and contributions will fund the running of the farm. Fundraising events held quarterly and a gala event held annually will be there to assist in any remaining revenue gaps not funded by grant money or individual contribution. And by the way, Kayla was able to escape through a bedroom window at the home where she went for the interview. Many other victims are not so fortunate.
