I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl when I would follow my grandma around while she got ready for her nursing shifts. To this day, I have the nurse barbie that I 'absolutely' had to have for Christmas. While I've known my dream since a young age, life had other plans for me and now I am back on the road to pursuing my dream. I am a single parent of two and have been for the last thirteen years. My battle with mental health began in my teen years. I came from an underprivileged family and mental health wasn't a priority, so I was not allowed to get treatment. I became a teen mom at 16 and had my second child by 21. My family moved out of state and I stayed behind to try to keep my little family together. I found myself in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship with my children's father and was essentially secluded in my home. My first thought of suicide happened one night after an abusive episode. As my abuser showered, I lay on the floor hoping to die; wondering if it would be faster just to end my life myself. I heard my daughter, who was 2 months old at the time, cry. It was then that I realized I needed to get out. I shoved as much as I could in a diaper bag and snuck out with my 2 young children. We never went back. Since then, I have battled PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Thankfully, I got a job that offered mental health services as part of the benefits package and I have been working through my mental health since then. I currently work two jobs to support them and do not get any financial assistance or support. Since beginning the RN program, I've had to cut my hours by 1/2, including quitting my part-time job. This has had a major impact on being able to provide basic needs, such as housing, food, clothing, etc. This is a sacrifice we have to make to provide us with more stability in the future. I am trying to show my children how important education is and how it needs to be a priority. I am also trying to show them the importance and value of integrity and self-worth so they do not find themselves in a situation similar to my past. Since I am the first in my family to attend college, I hope I am setting a good example for both of them that will hopefully push them to pursue a rewarding career doing something they love. A scholarship help provide the flexibility to reduce my work hours and provide the time and mental well-being to needed to successfully complete the RN program. Stress taken off the financial burden of school will also allow me to spend more time maintaining the bond my children and I have built and maintained through our struggles together. The financial aspect of school has been a major reason as to why I have put it off for so long. I have been an LVN for almost 5 years now and want to do more. Working in my current position has pushed me to want to advance and obtain my RN license so I can help more people in need. This will open new opportunities and allow me to make a bigger impact on healthcare. My wish is to stay in the field of Addiction Medicine and have an impact on the growing epidemic right in our community.

While I've known my dream since a young age, life had other plans for me and now I am back on the road to pursuing my dream. I am a single parent of two and have been for the last thirteen years. I currently work as an LVN at a clinic where we provide free health care to homeless patients. We also have an addiction medicine program that is open to everyone. Part of my position is going out with a group of physicians, social workers, and other local resources to homeless encampments where we provide health care, resources, and basic needs to some of the most vulnerable populations. I became a teen mom at 16. Despite the challenges, I graduated high school a year early and became a medical assistant at 17. My father was always my biggest supporter. After many years, he finally convinced me to return to school. I enrolled and graduated as Valedictorian. Unfortunately, my father passed away 3 months before I graduated from the program. I have been an LVN for almost 5 years now and want to do more. Working in my current position has pushed me to want to advance and obtain my RN license so I can help more people in need. I always knew I wanted t help others but with my recent experience, I know exactly who I want to help the most and how. There is such a huge stigma surrounding homelessness and addiction and I want to be part of helping those patients when many others won't. Obtaining my RN license will open new opportunities to allow me to make a bigger impact on healthcare in our county. My wish is to stay in the field of Addiction Medicine and have an impact on the growing epidemic right in our community. I am trying to show my children how important education is and how it needs to be a priority. I come from an underprivileged upbringing, and I am the first in my family to attend college. I became a parent at the age of 16 and through hard work, I was able to graduate high school a year early. After completing high school, I became a medical assistant. Since leaving a physically and emotionally relationship with my children's father, I have supported my children on my own and wish to continue showing them what hard work and determination can accomplish. I feel by doing this, I am setting a good example for both of them that will hopefully push them to pursue a rewarding career doing something they love. A scholarship will allow me to provide basic needs for my children as well as provide me with the flexibility to reduce my work hours and provide the time and mental well-being to needed to successfully complete the RN program. The scholarship will also help immensely with the cost of school supplies, such as books, uniforms, shoes, and other materials that may become needed during the program. The financial aspect of being in the nursing program has been a major reason as to why I have put it off for so long.
    Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl when I would follow my grandma around while she got ready for her nursing shifts. To this day, I have my nurse barbie that I 'absolutely' had to have for Christmas. I have been an LVN for almost 5 years now and want to do more. Working in my current position has pushed me to want to advance and obtain my RN license so I can help more people in need. I am a single parent of two and have been for the last thirteen years. I currently work two jobs to support them and do not get any financial assistance nor support. Since beginning the RN program, I have had to cut my working hours by 1/2, including quitting my part time job. This has had a major impact on being able to provide basic needs, such as housing, food, clothing, etc. This is a sacrifice we have to make to provide us with more stability in the future. I am trying to show my children how important education is and how it needs to be a priority. I come from an underprivileged upbringing, and I am the first in my family to attend college. I am a single parent of two and have been for the last thirteen years. I was in a physically and emotionally violent relationship with my children's father, and since leaving the relationship I do not receive any support. I currently work two jobs to support them and therefore do not qualify for any social services/financial assistance.
