    Velez NJ Scholarship
My name is Krisan Hall, and I am a first-generation immigrant to the United States and a first-generation college student. Since the fifth grade, when my parents separated, I have lived in a single-parent home with my mom, younger sister, and now my maternal grandmother. It has been a difficult transition from living with both parents to living with one parent, moving to a new town where I don’t know anyone and would have to make new friends. It was my second time moving so, once again, I had to adapt to my new situations and environment. While this change was challenging, I am thankful as it taught me to be versatile and adaptable from a young age. I did not let my new surroundings hinder my ability to perform well in school. In the spring of 2020, I graduated from high school with high honors and in the top 15%. I earned a GPA of 3.66 while being a student-athlete in tennis and track, being the varsity baseball team manager, and volunteering with clubs such as Key Club and In Her Element. I participated in the Waksman Student Scholar program (2018-2019). During this program, I participated in authentic inquiry-based research investigations and activities in bioinformatics and molecular biology. The results of my year-long research were published on the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) website. I attended Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC), where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA earning an Associate of Arts Degree in Social Science. While at RVCC, I became vice president of the sign language club, graduated from the honors college, and was an Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) scholar. I am now a transfer student at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, where I am pursuing my bachelors degree in psychology. After graduating with my bachelors degree, I plan to pursue a graduate degree in organizational psychology before entering the workforce as an organizational psychologist, where I will aid businesses and employees improve various aspects of the work environment. My mom has sacrificed a lot, and I have overcome many obstacles: immigrating to the United States, moving, graduating high school and starting college during the COVID-19 pandemic, a migraines diagnosis in 2019, and a recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2021 to reach this point in my academic journey and I do not want financial challenges to hold me back. Receiving this scholarship would help tremendously in reducing the financial burden that my mom and I face in my pursuit of higher education. This scholarship will help me to worry less about how I will pay for college and focus more on my academics and my involvement in the community and student organizations. Whether or not I receive this scholarship, I want to thank you very much for considering my application, and I look forward to hearing from you.
