Bio

Growing up I didn’t have many family members that attended college. Seeing my single mother of 2 achieve getting her masters degree showed me how it improves a persons confidence and quality of life. I have the opportunity to continuing my journey of higher education at North Carolina Central as a nursing student. It’s a financial strain on my mother and I am searching for scholarships to aid.

Nursing is something that I want to pursue and succeed in. I’m passionate about becoming a nurse because of my conversation with my great-grandfather. He told me about his experiences when he was growing up dealing with hospitals. He was in the Navy and experienced racism at home and out of the country. He wanted me to change how people of color felt about hospitals. Even still to this day, people of color don’t feel safe in hospitals. I want to change this in any way I can. I want people to trust hospitals and medical professionals again. I want to make my Pop-Pop proud and positively impact the medical community. My Pop-Pop was an active male figure in my life. I spent most of my childhood around him. His wish was to see me graduate high school and pursue nursing. He has watched me cross the stage and now I want him to see me become a nurse. It’s my goal to help everyone in any way I can for the amount of time I will be working. I will become a pediatric nurse so I can close the gap for how many African Americans do not trust the medical system due to history. African Americans have faced racial inequality throughout history. We also see a lack of melanin representation in the medical field. Africans are genetically different from Europeans, yet we only see one race being represented in our books, medical tests, and hospitals. It is important to me that younger generations are inspired and witness change. Starting with children will correct this. I also enjoy working with children, they have a very different and light perspective on the world due to their age. Nurses have a lasting impact on the people they serve. My education will help me prepare for the diverse needs of patients. Having a BSN will better equip me to manage everything happening in the healthcare field today. Serving the newer generation with fresh ideas and patient care will show support and lower mortality rates. I have had the opportunity to travel to multiple countries and have seen the crumbling/unorganized healthcare systems in third-world countries. They're struggling with no help medically. Just like in America, some people don't have access to healthcare. Using my college education, I will try my best to aid these people. I will use fundraisers to raise money to help administer healthcare. Everyone has the right to healthcare pro bono. Places like Congo and Gaza are facing increasing violence and insecurity impacting public health. Since the start of the crisis between Israel and Palestine, over 700 attacks have been made on health facilities in the Gaza Strip. These innocent citizens do not have access to security, food, or medicine. It is important to me that low-income parties receive the same aid and medical attention as everyone. Healthcare access shouldn't be based on race, religion, sexuality, or beliefs but a right.

My education will help me prepare for the diverse needs of patients. Having a BSN will better equip me to manage all that is happening in the healthcare field today. The healthcare field has experienced shortages after what happened regarding the Covid-19 virus. I want to restore hope in the community and try to help regain people’s interest in working as nurses. Nursing is pursued as a hard major that isn’t worth it but I want to show people that it is. Nurses have a lasting impact on the people they serve. It could either be an amazing impact or not. As a nurse, it would be my job to restore the positive aspect once known in the nursing field. I want people to know that even though as a community we have been through hard times there are always people working to make things better for us now and in the future.

    William A. Lewis Scholarship
I have always enjoyed English and it has always been an easy class, but I never understood Math. The letters and numbers together, as well as the quick speed at which it is taught, made it a tricky subject for me. After elementary school, I was always lost and behind in class. As soon as I would understand the topic we were covering, we would move forward with another subject, and I would once again be lost and behind. In middle school, my math grade never surpassed a C. I became satisfied with failing grades in math, and that was unacceptable. Watching other students around me succeed while I had a conflict with every assignment deterred me. I always believed I would never use certain aspects of math outside of school. Late freshman year, I realized the career I wanted to pursue is nursing which includes math and science aspects. I'm a hard worker and believed I could achieve more so during freshman year, after consistently struggling in math, I realized it was time I finally got a tutor. I always felt embarrassed to ask for help when it came to people outside my household. Certainly, I don’t particularly appreciate being judged. However, having a tutor changed my mind about the importance of asking for help. Before, I wasn't very patient and would get upset at myself for not understanding as quickly as other students. My tutor made me realize that no one knows the answers to everything. I realized it’s okay to ask for help. I started to reach out more, not just for my struggles in math, but also for personal issues. Instead of bottling everything in, I realized evaluation from others is crucial for growth in yourself. My grades started to improve; having someone explain and show me different ways to solve equations and problems made me realize there is always another way. I started to seek extra guidance from teachers, and I learned study strategies. Getting an answer wrong isn’t the end. My tutor helped me improved not only my education but my mental. She taught me how to overcome obstacles with help and by myself. As well as the tutor, my mother has guided me through this obstacle. She always pushed me to do more and showed me that I could. The days I didn't meet with my tutor she would help me in any way she could. She reminded me that even though I had come to a bump in the road I am well-fitted to get over this.

My name is Kori Waters and it is my dream to become a Pediatric Nurse. I am an undergraduate student from Baltimore, MD pursuing Nursing at North Carolina Central University. I want to make my Pop-Pop proud and impact the medical community in the most positive way. I will be majoring in Pre-Nursing. This major will give me all the information and skills I need to become a successful nurse. I will be doing hands-on clinical learning, navigating patient interactions, and how to work in healthcare. I decided that the career I wanted to pursue would be nursing and after doing my research I realized math was a large part of nursing. Nursing requires accurate numerical calculations, so knowing basic math skills is crucial to patient safety. Unlike in high school classes, they cannot use calculators and have to think fast on their feet. Since this is the career I want, I have prioritized my math classes and taken them seriously. I plan to reach out to professors, fellow students, and people I know that have been through the same thing. For courses that are challenging, which I expect because this is the next level of education, I will try my hardest and if I struggle, I will seek extra guidance from others. I will use my new knowledge from my college course and clinical to succeed in my career. I will take the hands-on learning from clinical and use it to improve my knowledge of what I already know about nursing. I am currently working as a camp counselor at ESF Camps at Gilman to prepare me on how it will be working with children. Working day to day around children of all ages shows me how to serve them in the best way possible when the time comes. No matter what obstacles try to get in my way, I will successfully become a nurse.
