Since I was a young girl, I have always loved helping people. One way to do that is by pampering people and making them feel gorgeous. While I was in high school, all my family members would gather together for a family picture. Before the event, my step mom would ask for me to help her get ready. I would begin the process by doing her makeup. I often tested many shades of eyeshadow before finding the perfect color to use. Next, I did her hair. Sometimes I curled her hair and put it up. Other times she wore it down straight but with a chic barrette. I loved creating a masterpiece. The difference of what she looked like from before and afterwards was stunning. She knew she looked fantastic. I felt so fulfilled. Now, let me tell you a bit about me. My name is Jenessa Martin and I am 35 years old. I have a lovely family of 3 that is so very important to me, they are my everything! I also have two cute chihuahuas. Recently, I decided to go to college. At first, I was thinking of going into the medical field and to become a registered nurse. Then, I thought to myself “What do I love to do more than anything? Why not do this for the rest of my life and get paid to do it? Thats it, aim going to Beauty School!” A couple of months ago, I had my first day of Evergreen Beauty College. Going to school is one of the most exciting things in life. On top of that, I have won multiple awards. Most importantly, I placed in the top five of a well known competition called “Trash to Trends Fashion Show.” I am so proud thus far and can imagine that things will continue to improve more and more as I get closer to my graduation date! I have learned so much and in such a short time. I look forward to learning more advanced techniques of cutting hair. I also, cannot wait to grow as a future professional. When starting this journey I was unsure of a lot but I am surely gaining more confidence. In the near future, I plan to give women, men and children a great feeling inside and out. I plan to do this by helping individuals find their inner beauty. I plan on doing this giving clients a new haircut, a simple facial or a beard trim. Feelings out beauty on the outside tend to move inward. I know that I always feel better after walking out of a salon. That is how I plan to change the world with one person at a time! Thanks for taking the time to learn about me and my life!

When I was 19, I started experimenting with drugs. In the beginning it was just for fun. It only took a few months and before I knew it, I was in over my head. I used to wake up every morning and the first thing I would do was get loaded. I would distance myself far from my loved ones so that I could hide in my addiction. I didn’t want anyone that loved me to see what a mess I had become. I was still in denial for a really long time. I thought I wasn’t that far gone. One day I wake up feeling different. After talking to my sister, I decide to take a pregnancy test. The result reads positive. At that very moment I had to decide what in life is most important. Getting clean and staying clean was hard. But, I chose my child and a life with him! Now, I have a beautiful son who is the light of my world. I get to wake up and go into his room every morning to see his sweet little face. He is absolutely the very best thing that has ever happened to me. He does not know this yet but, he saved my life. I was on a path of destruction. I hated myself and was so lost. He is an inspiration to me. He gave me a reason to live. I learned to believe in myself. He will always be “my little hero!”

Since I was young, I have always loved helping people. One way to do that is by pampering people and making them feel gorgeous. While I was in high school, all my family members would gather together for a family picture. Before the event, my step mom would ask me if I could help her get ready. My relationship with my step mom was complicated. She and I were very different people and being around her made me nervous. But, whenever she asked me to do this, I felt honored. Out of all the people she knew, she asked me for help and I liked that. I would begin the process by doing her make up. I never had to worry about foundation because her skin was even and clear. I put on a pink blush that made her cheeks pop. I tested many shades of eyeshadow before finding the perfect color to use. After many layers of mascara, her face looked complete. Next step was her hair. I can still remember this clearly. She had so much hair that it took me forever. Her hair was so thick that I really had to get creative. Sometimes I curled her hair and put it up. Other times she wore it down straight but with a chic barrette. Creating masterpiece was so satisfying. The difference of what she looked like from before and then after was stunning. She knew she looked fantastic. I felt so fulfilled. Recently, I decided to go to college. At first, I was thinking of going into the medical field and to become a registered nurse. Then, I thought to myself “What do I love to do more than anything? Why not do this for the rest of my life and get paid to do it?” Thats when I knew that Beauty School was right for me! A couple of months ago, I had my first day at Evergreen Beauty College. Going to school is one of the most exciting things in life. As I get in deeper and deeper into the Cosmetology program, I am completely convinced that I will be doing this as my career forever. On top of that, I have won multiple awards. Most importantly, I placed in the top five of a well known competition called “Trash to Trends Fashion Show.” I am so proud thus far and can only imagine that things will only continue to improve l even more as I get closer to my graduation date! I have learned so much and in such a short time. I look forward to learning advanced techniques of cutting and styling hair. I thrive my best when doing haircuts for men which is called being a Barber! I cannot wait to grow as a future professional. When starting this journey I was unsure of a lot but I am surely gaining more confidence. Lastly, I would like to discuss my struggle with finances. When I first started at the Beauty school, I had a job at Olive Garden as a server. Only about 2 months ago, I left my job to focus more on schooling. With many interviews this week, I am keeping my head held high in hopes to find another job soon because money has run out. I would like to thank you for taking the time to learn about me and my life!

I didn’t want anyone that loved me to see what a mess I had become. I was still in denial for a really long time. I thought I wasn’t that far gone. During the heart of my addiction, I lived in a double wide trailer with “friends.” I used sheets as the walls for my room. I had zero privacy and zero responsibilities. The only thing that was important to me was to get high. I couldn’t get out of bed or motivated to do anything. Everyday I felt like I was dying. My skin shriveled up and I couldn’t keep any weight on. Drugs was my first priority above all. My mind said that drugs became more important than food or water. Ten years into my addiction, I started getting unusual symptoms. I kept getting sick and couldn’t keep anything down. In the beginning of the nausea I thought I was having food poisoning. Days later, I still feel sick. I finally call my sister and she tells me to come over right away. The first thing she does is to hand me a pregnancy test. I take it and it reads a positive result. This can’t be. I have done nothing different for the last ten years of my life so why now? I haven’t ever been protected or used birth control regularly so I assumed that I couldn’t have children. Let me fast forward to today. Now, I have a beautiful son who is the light of my world. I get to wake up and go into his room every morning to see his sweet little face. He is absolutely the very best thing that has ever happened to me. He does not know this yet but, he saved my life. I was on a path of destruction. I hated myself and was so lost.
