      Ali Safai Memorial Scholarship
My name is Kishan Vahalia, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of Nebraska Omaha, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Aviation – Professional Flight. I am currently working toward my instrument rating; however, the path I took to become a pilot was not always clear to me. Throughout my life, I was often asked, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” That question used to haunt me because I never knew how to answer it. I felt pressured, and I hated responding, “I’m not sure yet.” As high school progressed, I enrolled in different types of classes to discover what truly interested me enough to pursue as a career. From computer science to chemistry to business, nothing seemed to appeal to me. That uncertainty continued to follow me until my senior year of high school, when I discovered aviation through a scholarship opportunity. At the time, I did not know much about the profession since I did not know any pilots personally, but I decided to apply out of pure curiosity. To my surprise, I received the scholarship and hoped some positive outcome would come from the experience, especially with college applications around the corner. Then came my first opportunity to fly out of Centennial Airport, Colorado. I stepped into a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, curious and eager to learn what flying was really like. With my first logbook entry, I discovered something new: a passion and a purpose. For the first time, I could clearly picture a future for myself. Maybe I could make a career out of this. Maybe I could become a pilot. Now, as I balance a 3.9 GPA in college, my passion and involvement in aviation continue to grow. Outside of school and flight training, I work for a startup company focused on developing an artificial intelligence copilot designed to assist pilots in the cockpit. As a core member of the team, my role involves marketing and outreach through social media platforms to highlight the value technology can play in helping pilots and aviation professionals with safety and workload management. Additionally, I am a member of the UNO Flying Mavericks collegiate flight team, where I use my skills and contribute alongside other dedicated aviation students representing our university in competitions. These experiences have helped me grow not only as a pilot, but also as a teammate. Through my involvement in aviation thus far, my career goals have become more intentional. I aspire to become a corporate pilot, flying for businesses, aviation organizations, or professional sports teams. I understand the amount of discipline and hard work required to reach that level, but I am fully committed to the journey. I am willing to put in the work, continue improving, and value every opportunity that moves me one step closer to that goal. Ultimately, the impact aviation has had on my life has been substantial. It has given me direction, purpose, and something to look forward to every day. I am deeply grateful for the early opportunity I received, which introduced me to this field and changed the course of my future. As a student funding flight training and college costs, receiving the Ali Safai Memorial Scholarship would be an incredible honor and support on my path toward becoming a professional pilot. It would allow me to continue pursuing my passion while carrying forward Mr. Safai’s inspirational legacy in aviation. Thank you for your consideration.
      Craig Huffman Memorial Scholarship
First, I want to sincerely thank Mr. Huffman’s family and friends for honoring his legacy through this scholarship. My name is Kishan Vahalia, and I’m currently a freshman at the University of Nebraska Omaha, majoring in Aviation with a concentration in Professional Flight. My path to aviation started differently from some others I’ve come across. From a young age, I was captivated by space and astronomy. When I was nine years old, I remember watching the Perseid meteor shower in my backyard, mesmerized by each shooting star and constellation that came into my view. That night, a passion sparked, one that only grew stronger with time. As I got older, my fascination with astronomy evolved into a deeper curiosity about exploring our universe. By high school, that curiosity led me to explore careers in the aerospace industry, but one path in particular stood out: becoming a Pilot. At the moment, I am wrapping up my Private Pilot training and preparing for my checkride, hoping to start my instrument rating in the next month. Each flight deepens my passion for aviation and reminds me why I chose this path in the first place. I’m especially excited about where the future of flight is headed, from supersonic travel that could connect continents in just a few hours, to human spaceflight that expands the boundaries of exploration, to electric and sustainable aircraft that are redefining how we think about efficiency and the environment. My curiosity keeps expanding, as I hope I can contribute to helping these innovations take off. To me, leadership is about adaptability, clear communication, and the ability to empower yourself and those around you to succeed. Throughout high school, I’ve been able to embrace this through volunteering and taking on officer roles in clubs. As a member of The Happy Crew, a student-led mental health awareness organization, I, alongside my peers, have helped to create a safe space for students to talk openly about stress and mental health without judgment. This experience taught me how important mental health is for everyone, especially in aviation, where staying focused and composed in stressful events directly affects aeronautical decision-making and safety. In addition, competing for the Colorado State 4H Sharpshooting Team for four years and serving as President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Parliamentarian of our club has strengthened my ability to work, grow, and support my teammates at county and state-wide competitions. Together, these experiences have instilled in me the confidence, composure, and sense of responsibility that I strive to carry into every challenge and situation. My path began with curiosity, staring up at the night sky in awe. Now, as I work towards earning my wings, I carry that same wonder with me. As Stephen Hawking quoted, “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist.” That spirit of curiosity is what sparked my passion, and it’s what continues to inspire me to follow this career path. Receiving the Craig Huffman Memorial Scholarship would be an incredible honor and support in my path toward becoming a Professional Pilot, allowing me to continue pursuing my passion while carrying forward Mr. Huffman’s legacy in aviation. Thank you for your consideration.
      KG Aviation Scholarship
1.) So far I am accruing hours for my Private Pilot License, so far having around 30 hours. I have passed the FAA written test, flown my first solo, hold a first class medical certificate, flown my first solo, and have earned over 30 college credits at Metropolitan State University of Denver for their flight program, as a senior in high school. 2.) Aviation has always captivated me – the idea of conquering the skies, and exploring the world from a unique perspective. Now, I stand on the precipice of my college career, eager to transform this childhood dream into a reality, pursuing a degree in aviation with the goal of becoming an airline pilot. This fascination began when I was six years old, during my first commercial flight from Chicago to Denver. As I stepped on that plane, the pilot invited me to sit in his chair and explore the cockpit. Its intricate array of instruments and controls looked like a futuristic spaceship to my young eyes. This moment sparked a curiosity. This is when I knew I wanted to experience the thrill of flying. So far, my senior year has been a testament to the multifaceted nature of my pursuits, from college applications, to managing the rigor of AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP US Government, and other dual enrollment classes, posing a desired challenge to prepare for my future. Outside of school, I spend most of my time at the airport, accruing flight hours to earn my private pilot license. When I’m not flying, I work as a lifeguard, I’m an editor and column writer for my high school’s newspaper, I’m a member of my school’s Eco Club, and I continue to practice my shooting skills and serve as a captain of the Colorado State Air Rifle Team. I've recently developed a passion for astronomy, spending countless nights exploring the cosmos through my telescope. These nights I’ve spent observing celestial bodies have not only expanded my understanding of the universe but have also fostered a sense of wonder and a deep appreciation for our world, qualities that will continue to fuel my passion for exploration, which aviation would allow me to do. Prior to my senior year, I completed ground school and began my flight training, with the goal of achieving my private pilot license before starting college. My first flights were exhilarating, where the steep turns and stalls felt similar to an endless roller coaster full of twists and turns at 10,000 feet up in the air. Now, as I navigate traffic patterns and communicate with Air Traffic Control, I'm experiencing the growing confidence of flying, as I inch my way closer to my oral exam and my check-ride. My aspiration to become a Professional Airline Pilot extends beyond personal ambition. I aim to inspire others to pursue their passions with full dedication. I strive to demonstrate that pursuing one's passions, even those that may seem unconventional, can lead to inner-fulfillment and achievement. As an aspiring pilot, I envision contributing to a more sustainable future for aviation, advocating for environmentally responsible practices such as exploring alternative fuels and optimizing flight routes to minimize our environmental impact. I am eager to contribute to an industry that connects people and cultures while minimizing its footprint on our planet. This scholarship would not only provide valuable financial support to finish pursuing my private pilot license, but also serve as a testament to my commitment to pursue aviation in college.
