I want to pursue a career that allows me to create meaningful change in the lives of others. The nonprofit sector appeals to me because it focuses on service, compassion, and addressing real needs within communities. I believe that success is not only measured by personal achievements but also by the positive impact we leave on the people around us. My life experiences have taught me that many individuals and families face challenges that often go unseen, and I want to dedicate my work to helping provide support, education, and opportunities for those who need them most. Throughout my life, I have learned the importance of resilience and perseverance. Challenges have shaped me into someone who values empathy and understands that everyone carries struggles that others may not fully understand. Those experiences have strengthened my desire to help people feel supported, heard, and empowered. I have come to realize that when individuals are given the right resources and encouragement, they can overcome obstacles and create positive change in their own lives. This belief is a large part of what draws me toward nonprofit work. I am currently pursuing my BA in AyurVeda Wellness Education at Maharishi International University because I want to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a stronger advocate and leader within my community. My studies are teaching me how physical, mental, and emotional well-being are connected and how education can empower people to live healthier and more balanced lives. Education is more than earning a degree; it is a tool that creates opportunities and transforms lives. I hope to use what I learn to serve others by promoting wellness, prevention, and education within communities that may not have access to adequate resources or support systems. I want to help people understand the importance of caring for their overall well-being and provide guidance that can improve quality of life. Whether through community outreach programs, wellness initiatives, educational workshops, or nonprofit organizations focused on health and personal growth, I want my work to create lasting positive change. I also believe meaningful change begins with human connection. Sometimes people do not need someone to solve every problem; they need someone willing to listen, encourage them, and guide them toward opportunities and resources. I want to be the type of person who helps create those connections and empowers others to recognize their own strengths and potential. My goal is not simply to work in the nonprofit field but to become someone who creates a lasting impact. By combining my education, personal experiences, and commitment to service, I hope to contribute to stronger, healthier communities and help individuals create better futures for themselves and their families.
Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship
My life journey has been shaped by perseverance, responsibility, and a desire to create a better future not only for myself but also for those around me. Returning to higher education at this stage in my life was not a decision I made lightly. It came from years of life experiences, challenges, personal growth, and realizing that education has the power to open doors and create meaningful change. While many people follow a traditional path through school, life often takes unexpected turns. Those experiences have helped shape who I am today and strengthened my determination to continue growing and pursuing goals that align with my values and purpose. Throughout my journey, I have learned that obstacles can either discourage us or motivate us to become stronger. I have experienced moments that required resilience, adaptability, and persistence. Balancing responsibilities while pursuing educational goals has taught me discipline and time management, but it has also shown me the importance of believing in myself even when circumstances become difficult. I understand that success is not always a straight line. Sometimes it requires taking a different path, learning from setbacks, and having the courage to begin again. These experiences have deeply shaped my personal values. I value compassion because I understand that everyone is fighting challenges that others may never see. I value hard work because I know that meaningful accomplishments require commitment and effort. I value service because I believe that helping others creates stronger communities and leaves a lasting impact. I have learned that even small acts of kindness and support can change someone’s life, and this understanding has influenced the way I approach both personal and professional goals. My experiences have also shaped my career aspirations. I want a career where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Education is giving me the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills, and confidence that will allow me to serve people in a way that promotes growth, health, and well-being. I do not simply want a degree for personal advancement; I want to use what I learn to become a source of support and positive influence for others. I believe true success is measured not only by what we achieve individually but also by the impact we make on our communities. Community service and helping others are important to me because I believe strong communities are built when people invest in one another. I hope to use my education to educate, encourage, and empower people around me. Whether through mentoring, sharing knowledge, supporting families, or helping individuals improve their lives, I want my education to become a tool for creating positive change. I want to inspire others to believe that growth and opportunity are possible regardless of age, background, or circumstances. Receiving the Debra S. Jackson New Horizons Scholarship would provide support that extends beyond financial assistance. It would help reduce the financial burden that often accompanies higher education and allow me to focus more fully on my academic goals. More importantly, it would represent an investment in my future and in the positive contributions I hope to make. This scholarship would bring me closer to achieving my goals and strengthen my ability to continue pursuing an education that will create opportunities for both personal success and community impact. I am committed to continuing this journey with determination, gratitude, and purpose. I believe education is one of the most powerful tools for change, and I am ready to use it to create a brighter future for myself and for those I have the opportunity to serve.
      Amber D. Hudson Memorial Scholarship
If awarded, I would educate and assist patients and their families by using an evidence-based, integrative, and compassionate approach to improving nutrition and lifestyle habits that support both quality and quantity of life. Extensive peer-reviewed research demonstrates a strong relationship between nutritional choices and the prevention, progression, and in some cases improvement of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. My goal is to translate this scientific knowledge into practical, individualized guidance that patients can realistically apply in their daily lives. My approach would focus on sustainable, incremental change rather than restrictive or overwhelming dietary shifts. I would encourage patients to make gradual improvements such as increasing whole, nutrient-dense foods, improving macronutrient balance, reducing highly processed foods, and supporting hydration and regular meal patterns. At the same time, I would tailor recommendations to each person’s cultural background, financial situation, health status, and personal preferences, recognizing that effective healthcare must be both evidence-based and accessible. Education would be central to my role. I would use clear explanations, visual tools, and simple frameworks to help patients understand how nutrition influences inflammation, energy levels, immune function, and long-term disease risk. In addition, I would involve families whenever possible, since long-term behavior change is strongly influenced by the home environment. When families participate together, they create shared accountability, reinforcement, and consistency, which significantly improves health outcomes. My academic training in PH416: Foundations of Research in Health and Wellness has strengthened my ability to evaluate peer-reviewed literature, interpret research findings, and distinguish between high-quality evidence and less reliable claims. I would apply these skills to ensure that all health education I provide is grounded in credible scientific research. A key example of this was my analysis of a randomized controlled trial on mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for chronic pain, published in JAMA, which reinforced my understanding of how mind-body interventions can complement traditional medical care. In addition to nutritional education, I would integrate mind-body and behavioral health principles into patient support. My personal practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) and my exposure to mindfulness-based research have shown me how stress regulation directly impacts physiological health outcomes, including inflammation, pain perception, and emotional well-being. I would incorporate stress management strategies alongside nutrition education to address both the physical and psychological dimensions of health. I would also provide practical tools such as meal planning strategies, grocery shopping guidance, label reading education, and examples of balanced, affordable meals. These resources help patients move from knowledge to action in their daily lives. Additionally, I would emphasize mindfulness around eating behaviors, helping individuals recognize emotional triggers, reduce stress-related eating patterns, and develop healthier coping strategies. Ultimately, my goal is to empower patients and their families to take an active role in their health through informed, consistent, and manageable lifestyle choices. I believe that small, intentional changes, supported by both scientific evidence and compassionate guidance, can lead to meaningful improvements in chronic disease prevention, symptom management, and overall well-being. By bridging integrative health principles with research-based education, I hope to support individuals in building sustainable habits that enhance their long-term health and quality of life.
