Buying Minecraft was the most influential decision I made in my life and is full of heartwarming memories: making my first home of dirt and torches, stealing potatoes from villagers, and bravely fighting zombies away from my home. But my favorite part of Minecraft was creative mode and having access to every single block possible and the ability to fly! I was able to make everything from skyscrapers and mansions to roller coasters and restaurants. I was fascinated by all the different possibilities of what I could make and how cities can be formed from just some blocks and an idea.
This of course is not quite the case in real life; there is tons of planning required to make any building idea a reality. Every detail must be considered and has careful calculations behind it. Still, through my time in high school I found myself becoming deeply passionate about finding ways to combine art, math, and science. I challenged myself through the difficult courses of AP Calculus AB, AP Physics, and many other advanced classes. Still, I found a great love and appreciation for the difficulty of these classes and the bonds I made with the people in them; there is nothing like leaving a test and continuing to discuss the way to solve those tough questions during lunch. I enjoyed how my teachers challenged us with the need to think creatively and work together to make ourselves improve all together. This, combined with my natural love for arts, is how I knew that I wanted to become an architect when I grew up.
Every building has a story and dreams that initiate collaboration, planning, and calculations that eventually creates the place people all around the world live, shop, learn, and travel to. There is a beautiful relationship between cities and people that makes me view buildings as a key feature of society. Urban areas are always finding ways to reinvent themselves into cooler, more attractive locations for people to visit and explore, and I know that I want to be a part of making streets come to life.
It is difficult to get bored when there is so much to see in an area with all types of stores and stand-out features. Take the magical park of Walt Disney World where everything appears to be straight from a picture book for example. Everyone loves walking through the Disney towns and seeing the iconic park symbols of Cinderella’s Castle, Tower of Terror, Epcot ball, and Tree of Life. I am no exception to this of course. My first visit was full of awe from the world created there that I thought could only come from my imagination. I grew up to learn about some of the tricks used to make Disney the charming place it is, such as the scaling down of higher parts of buildings in order to make them appear larger than they really are. I find this illusion to be a perfect example of a combination I love, one of both creativity and cleverness.
I know my love for design and my love for math and science can carry me through the challenges of problem solving and critical thinking required to make building ideas come to life. I am passionate about architecture and am eager to begin working towards my goals of modeling buildings and communicating to make dream locations that can maybe spark amazing creativity in future generations.
