Bio

Hello! My name is Kimberly Perez, and I am from Fort Worth, Texas. I am a first-generation Hispanic student and the youngest of three sisters, raised primarily by my grandmother in a single-parent household. From a young age, I watched her care for others with patience and love, which inspired my own desire to help people. I attended Marine Creek Collegiate High School and graduated in 2020 with both my diploma and an Associate of Arts degree from Tarrant County College. My passion for nursing comes from my grandmother’s example. Seeing how her small acts of kindness and dedication improved the lives of those around her taught me that compassion can truly change lives. Her influence inspired me to pursue nursing, where I can combine empathy with skill to make a meaningful impact on patients and their families. I am currently a full-time student in the ADN program at Weatherford College. After completing my degree, I plan to pursue an RN-to-BSN program and expand my nursing experience with children and babies. My ultimate goal is to provide compassionate, high-quality care and positively influence the lives of those I serve.

From an early age, I watched my parents work tirelessly to provide for our family while instilling in me the importance of education and perseverance. Growing up as the youngest of three sisters in a Mexican-American household, I quickly realized that opportunities were not handed to us, they had to be earned. My parents, though they never attended college, encouraged me to pursue every chance to learn and grow, showing me that dedication and hard work can overcome barriers. Their sacrifices inspired me to become a first-generation college student and shaped my understanding of responsibility, ambition, and the transformative power of education. Navigating higher education without the guidance of family who had experienced it firsthand has been both challenging and empowering. I learned to seek out resources, ask questions, and advocate for myself in academic and professional settings. Balancing coursework, part-time work, and volunteer commitments has strengthened my resilience, time management, and problem-solving skills. These experiences reinforced my belief that education is not only a personal achievement but also a way to create opportunities for others. Each milestone I reach serves as a reminder of the trust my parents placed in me and their unwavering support for my success. Volunteering and community involvement have further shaped my perspective as a first-generation student. Helping peers navigate school and work responsibilities, tutoring students from similar backgrounds, and providing bilingual services have taught me that success is most meaningful when shared. These experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in nursing, where I can make a tangible difference in the lives of patients and their families, particularly in largely Hispanic communities like my own. I have seen how cultural understanding, empathy, and advocacy can empower patients to take charge of their health and improve outcomes. My Mexican-American heritage plays a central role in my journey and future goals. Cultural values of family, perseverance, and community remind me daily of the importance of honoring those who came before me and paving the way for those who will follow. I hope to serve as a healthcare provider who understands the unique needs of Hispanic patients, bridging cultural and language gaps, advocating for them, and supporting families through education and compassionate care. By combining my education, cultural insight, and dedication, I aim to make a meaningful impact not only on patients but also on my colleagues and the broader community. Being a first-generation, Mexican-American college student is not just a milestone; it is a responsibility and an opportunity. It challenges me to be adaptable, self-motivated, and empathetic while pursuing my goals. Every step I take is guided by the lessons of resilience, hard work, and commitment that I have learned from my family, and every accomplishment reinforces my dedication to creating opportunities for others. Choosing higher education and a career in nursing allows me to honor my heritage while contributing to the health and wellbeing of my community.

From an early age, I was inspired by the quiet strength and compassion of my grandmother, who raised me alongside my two older sisters in Fort Worth, Texas. Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed her dedication to caring for others while managing her own responsibilities. She offered guidance, support, and encouragement not only to her family but also to friends, neighbors, and anyone in need. Watching her approach life with patience, kindness, and determination taught me that empathy and thoughtful action can transform lives. These experiences instilled in me a desire to pursue a career where I could make a tangible difference, ultimately leading me to nursing. Graduating in 2020 with an Associate of Arts degree from Tarrant County College as a first-generation college student was a pivotal moment in my journey. Balancing academic responsibilities with family obligations required perseverance, discipline, and adaptability. I learned how to manage time effectively, navigate complex situations, and remain focused on long-term goals despite immediate challenges. These experiences shaped my understanding of resilience, empathy, and patience (qualities essential in nursing) and reinforced my desire for a career that combines intellectual challenge with the opportunity to impact lives directly. My clinical experiences in the ADN program at Weatherford College have further solidified my commitment to nursing. Working with children and infants, I have seen how attentiveness, advocacy, and compassion can comfort patients and their families during vulnerable moments. I have also observed how effective communication and teamwork improve patient outcomes, highlighting the importance of collaboration in healthcare. These experiences have shown that nursing requires not only technical skill but also emotional intelligence and the ability to respond to each patient as an individual. Each interaction has strengthened my belief that nursing is a profession where knowledge and heart must work together to provide the highest level of care. One of the aspects of nursing that resonates most with me is patient advocacy. Having grown up helping my grandmother support our family and navigate challenging situations, I understand the importance of giving patients a voice, guiding them through decisions, and ensuring their needs are respected. Nursing provides the opportunity to advocate for patients in meaningful ways and to empower them. Beyond patient care, I am inspired by the ability to positively influence my colleagues. By promoting collaboration, sharing knowledge, and modeling professionalism, I can contribute to a supportive workplace culture that elevates the quality of care for everyone. Nursing is also a career of lifelong learning. Medicine is constantly evolving, and each day presents new challenges, knowledge, and opportunities for growth. I am motivated by the idea that my work will require me to continuously adapt, think critically, and make informed decisions that directly affect people’s lives. At the same time, the profession demands emotional intelligence and the ability to connect with patients on a human level, demonstrating that compassion and clinical expertise are equally essential. Choosing nursing as a career is the culmination of my personal journey and the lessons I learned from my grandmother. Her example of selflessness, my experiences balancing family and academics, and my exposure to clinical practice have all influenced my decision to dedicate myself to a profession where empathy, skill, and advocacy intersect. Nursing allows me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families, to support and inspire my colleagues, and to continually grow in a field that challenges my mind and engages my heart.
    Jean Antoine Joas Scholarship
Hello! I am Kimberly Perez and I am a 20-year-old first-generation student at Tarrant County College. I grew up in a single-parent household; my Mother worked over 60 hours a week, leaving me to be primarily raised by my beloved Grandmother. She taught me everything I know, from tieing my shoes to learning how to move forward through life's unexpected hardships. Unfortunately, I lost her while I was still in high school; the grief of losing her stayed with me for years to come and affected my choices, ambition, and motivation for anything and everything. It wasn't until I hit a peak in my grief that I realized that I was letting life pass by and I needed to start living my life as my Grandmother would want me; that I needed to pursue something meaningful where I can express the most important value she integrated into me which was love...that only love can truly change the world. Like Jean, I am also a giver and will do what it takes to give to those in need. Upon realizing this, I immediately thought of nursing and how helping others during what could be some of the darkest times of their lives is exactly how I can create a positive difference. One of my goals within nursing is to strive and demonstrate care for and express compassion toward the sick and their families. Not only do the patients deserve compassion, but so do other healthcare providers. Being a healthcare provider is one of the most stressful professions someone can pursue and unfortunately, within that environment, there will be individuals from both patient and healthcare perspectives that are not the friendliest. It will help to always have someone on the healthcare side flash a smile or share words of encouragement. To improve how people are treated in the healthcare system, I will make it a personal mission to teach others how to be loving and patient even in strenuous situations. I have another crucial goal within nursing as well. Patient advocacy has been a major issue in the healthcare system. Often, patients feel as if their needs and concerns are not being prioritized or listened to. People get misdiagnosed or are not ordered life-saving medical examinations. As a nurse, I want patients to confide in me and trust that I will listen to everything they feel they need to say, so I can communicate with doctors and other medical professionals. Furthermore, apart from hearing what physical symptoms people are feeling, I also want to hear their dreams, inspirations, and fantasies. I want to get to know these people as much as I can even if it is for a short time frame. Overall, I want to be a healer, a listener, and a friend. These are qualities I want to hold not only as a nurse but as someone that cares for their community. I often look at the world around me and am saddened by the cruelty and negligence before my eyes. I am so glad and grateful to be part of the journey toward making a change in this world. Although there is a long road ahead, I know for a fact that my Grandmother would be proud of who I am becoming. I may not be able to see or hold her, but I can feel her love within me and it will never go away; I can promise you that.
