Writing has always been more than a skill for me—it is how I survive, connect, and make meaning of the world. As an LGBTQ+ writer, I learned early that my voice was not always welcomed, but I also learned that silence was far more dangerous. Writing became the place where I could tell the truth when I could not say it aloud, and where I could imagine a world that made room for people like me. My path as a writer has not been linear. I am a single mother, and I often struggle to make ends meet while balancing parenting, work, and my education. I am currently in my graduate year at Emerson, in the midst of my thesis semester, where I am working on a novel. This stage of my life is both creatively demanding and financially precarious. I have faced obstacles that include navigating my identity in spaces that were not always affirming, ongoing financial instability, and the constant responsibility of providing for my child while remaining committed to my craft. There were moments when I questioned whether pursuing writing—particularly creative writing and journalism—was practical or sustainable. Yet each setback strengthened my resolve rather than diminishing it. I continue to write through exhaustion, rejection, and self-doubt because the stories I carry feel necessary, not optional. Writing is not something I do when time allows; it is something I make time for, even when circumstances are difficult. I am passionate about writing because it has the power to humanize, to bear witness, and to demand accountability. Whether through creative work or journalistic inquiry, I am drawn to stories that exist at the margins—stories of queer lives, resilience, grief, love, and injustice. Writing allows me to challenge harmful narratives while offering more honest and compassionate ones in their place. I believe that words, when used responsibly, can create cultural shifts and foster empathy where ignorance once thrived. The legacy of Justin Burnell deeply resonates with me. As a writer and human rights advocate, Justin embodied the belief that storytelling and justice are inseparable. His life and work are a reminder that writing is not just about craft, but about impact—about using one’s voice in service of others. The fact that this scholarship supports both young and adult learners affirms something I hold dear: that growth, creativity, and purpose do not expire, even in the face of hardship. My ambition is to complete my thesis novel and continue building a body of work that contributes meaningfully to the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. My drive is fueled by lived experience—by the responsibility I feel to my child, to myself, and to those whose stories are too often overlooked. The impact I hope to make is rooted in visibility, truth, and connection, ensuring that people who feel unseen know they are not alone. Receiving the Justin Burnell Memorial Scholarship would provide vital financial support during this pivotal moment in my education and creative work. More importantly, it would affirm my commitment to writing with integrity, courage, and compassion, and to carrying forward Justin Burnell’s legacy through stories that honor humanity and insist on hope.
