Bio
Hi! I am Kimberly! I am currently a sophomore at Purdue Northwest in Indiana and I am going for my BSN!!
I’m very passionate about the healthcare field. And the reason why is because my dad almost 6 years ago passed away from cancer. When I was at the hospital with him some of the nurses and the aids that he had were not family-oriented and I felt could’ve treated him better. And from that moment I realized I wanted to be a nurse in healthcare to be able to change.
My long-term goal is to eventually become a nurse practitioner. And I would love to work with pediatrics in oncology.
I have two beautiful little girls and I work as a CNA in a hospital. I was just recently accepted to Purdue University Northwest into their nursing program. I never thought that this day would happen, that I would be able to achieve my goals. It has been a long road and I know that struggles will still occur, but I am more motivated than ever to get my BSN.

Sara Jane Memorial Scholarship
Let me start and say my name is Kimberly DeSimone and I am a single mom of two beautiful little girls. I’m very passionate about the healthcare field. I work as an RN Fellow in a hospital. I am currently a junior at Purdue University Northwest in their Nursing Program. The reason why it is so important to pursue a nursing career is because of my dad. Not just that, but to show my kids it does not matter how old you are or when you decide to go to college. What matters is that they are watching work hard for them. To be able to give them the life they deserve.
My dad died 5 years ago and that loss devasted me. When he was in the hospital he did not have the best care. I just felt like there was a lack of empathy. Due to that reason is that I do not want another family to experience what I have experienced. When my dad died, it truly left me a mess and even to this day it still gets hard knowing he is not there. For that reason, I am pursuing my nursing degree. I have such a passion and desire to help others.
Nurses are needed now more than ever. I want to be there. I want to be able to help others on their worst day, which is most likely being in a hospital. I want to help be a change in someone's life. Nursing is about being empathetic, compassionate, quick thinking and critical thinking career.
I did not always want to be a nurse, I was in fact in school for something completely different. It was not until my dad passed, that I realized how important it is for me to become a nurse. The work as a nurse is meaningful. I think that a lot of nurses forgot that. I hope that when I am working as a nurse that I can help bring that spark back to others that might have lost the reasoning as to why they became a nurse. Being a positive light to those around me, especially since I already work in a hospital.
It is important to be a nurse because nursing has a direct impact on patient care. We as nurses are responsible for providing direct care to patients, and they also play a vital role in patient education and discharge planning. In addition, nurses play a key role in infection control and wound care. Furthermore, nurses serve as patient advocates, and they are often the first line of defense against potential health problems. I want to be a part of that team. Helping be the change to those around me.
Nurses are the ones who are always there for the patients. They are the ones who comfort them and make them feel better. They also make sure that the patients can get the treatment that they need. Nurses are also the ones who make sure that the families of the patients are taken care of. They make sure that the families have the support that they need. Nurses are the ones who are there on someone's worst day. Just like I stated earlier in this essay. I want to help be a part of the healthcare world and help it be better. That's why becoming a nurse is important to me.

Working towards your nursing degree is not easy. It is probably one of the hardest things I have done, besides giving birth. Nursing is an excellent career choice for me. Bold Relaxation Scholarship
Mental health is something that I did not take seriously in my younger 20's. I have realized as I got older that taking care of your mental health is extremely important. Some ways that I relax are, sitting outside in the sun and making sure I am getting enough Vitamin D. I have noticed especially living in Indiana that seasonal depression is a real and it truly can mess with your mental health. I also enjoy exercising to help relieve any stress that I may have going on. I am a firm believer that exercising can truly change your mental health in a positive way. Another way I take care of myself is journaling. Journaling has truly helped me get out how I am feeling even though it is on paper, it is not stuck in my head anymore. Journaling has been my gateway recently. I have been through a divorce recently, I have two kids and I work two jobs. Not to mention I am in school full time as well. Writing down any stressors I have or feelings of depression and anxiety truly have made a difference in my mental health.
Bold Hope for the Future Scholarship
The one thing that gives me hope that the future will be better is honestly my children. I am confident in how I am raising them and how I am showing them you are never too old to go back to school and give up on your dreams. Too many times do we think that oh no I have kids I can’t go back to school or I can’t reach my dreams. But I believe that that is false. My kids have seen me struggle not only financially, but emotionally. When I’m honest with my children they respect that and they understand that I am working so hard to make their future better and I believe that will make the future better. I believe that I am raising the two best soon to be nurses. I know that I can sound cliché that my kids can make the future better, but I really do feel that they work so hard at everything they do and they are so sweet, kind and generous that is what our future needs right now. Life is tough and can become very difficult and sometimes we don’t have control as to what happens but we do have control of raising the next generation to be better and to do better. Everything that is happening in the world now we all need to be kind to one another and have a shoulder for others. My children have shown compassion to those in need And always keep others involved in activities that they are doing. That is what we need! We need people that are going to be inclusive not exclusive. So I believe that my children will have an impact in the future hands down. The reason why I say that is because I know they’ve seen me struggle but they’ve also seen me show love and compassion to others when they need it.
Supermom Scholarship
My children motivate me every day to be better and to want to do better not just for myself but for them as well. Let’s all be honest being a single mom is not easy. I am newly divorced and I’m trying to pursue my education in nursing. I just got excepted to Purdue northwest University and once I told my girls they were so happy that their mommy was going to become a nurse. My oldest daughter has a hard time in school right now, because she feels that school is a waste of time. But, she sees me work hard and do my best in school that it has motivated her to want to be better in school and to learn more. I work two jobs and do my best to provide for my children as best as I can. There are days where they are with their dad and it’s hard being away from them but I know it is only temporary. I do my best to explain to my children that when I’m working I am doing this for them, so that way they can understand mommy is working really hard for us. I didn’t grow up with a single mom, I grew up with a mom and a dad. However I was adopted at an insane age. I felt like a part of me was missing and it wasn’t until recently that I got into contact with my birth mother. Now my birth mother is a single mom and she raise two boys on her own after she gave me up for adoption. I remember asking her how she did it and how she became so successful. She told me with hard work, remembering who you’re doing this for, being there for your kids as much as you can, showing the kids that you can do anything was worth it. She told me that being a single mom was obviously not easy and not her first choice but, she did it and she became successful. I hope that my girls can see that I am working diligently to make a better life for them. I want them to know that you were never too old to chase your dreams and to go back to school. Do I wish that I went to school when I was in my younger 20s? Of course I do but there was another plan and I wouldn’t change it for the world. And the reason being is that now I’m able to show my girls with hard work and focus you can do just about anything.
Noah Jon Markstrom Foundation Scholarship
The reason why I would like to pursue a career in pediatric medicine is because I used to be a teacher and I worked with kids that were going into preschool. I also have two girls of my own and working with children has been nothing short of amazing. I want to be able to bring kids in their families laughter comfort and anything else they might need when they are going through something tough as a family. I understand that pediatric medicine is not for everybody but for me it holds a special place in my heart. I want to be able to help families and help their children and bond with them over Disney, marvel and anything else that they’re interested in. When a child is sick I’ve noticed that they do their best to be OK especially for their parents but I want them to know that it’s OK to not be OK sometimes and I want them to be able to talk to me and open up to me in the toughest part of their life. Right now I work as a CNA for older patients and as much as I do love that, kids will always have a special place in my heart. I know that seeing a sick child can be very heart wrenching, but I know that I am strong enough to be able to be there for them when they need me. Unfortunately not every child is born to a good family that is going to be there for them. Sometimes parents just don’t know what to do when their child is sick but feel helpless and I want to encourage them that even though this is a tough time and outcomes may not be known that they need to be there for their child. They need to love their child, be open with them, be there for them and communicate. Like I said in the beginning of my essay I have two girls and they are the light of my life. And I know how I would treat them not just as their mom but as a nurse, to make them as comfortable as I can. Listen to them when they need me to and maybe to even watch a movie if I can, or play a game with them. Pediatric medicine isn’t for everybody but I know it’s for me and to be able to put a smile on a child’s face and what might be the unknown would just fulfill me so much.
