I want to become a teacher because my teachers made such a huge impact on my life, good and bad. I want to be the teacher that students are excited to see and learn from. It's so easy to have a bad experience in school, and I just want to do my best to make sure that every student that walks through my door has the best experience I can give them. Every person in any position at any job has to learn from a teacher, which is why people should be so passionate about teaching in general.
Specifically, I want to teach history. My experiences with history teachers have been on both sides of the good/bad spectrum. I've had history teachers that I absolutely adored, and a few that I couldn't stand. Those experiences with bad teachers made me want to become a great teacher. In 7th grade, my teacher, who was my math teacher the previous year, had never taught history before, only math. This made it very difficult for her to teach the class. The majority of her projects and assignments were just coloring because that was the only way she knew how to teach the subject. The next year, in 8th grade, the teacher I had was a young teacher, fresh out of student-teaching, who had fun and new ideas for us to learn. We had classroom debates, we put on plays in class, and on review days we played review Jenga. Each block had a number on it that corresponded to a question on a slide show that the person had to answer, if they got it right, they got and point, and if they got it wrong, they lost a point. Eighth grade was a very fun year for learning history and my most memorable to date.
I want to teach children about our past, something I'm very passionate about. I want to make history fun and entertaining to learn by not just lecturing to my students for hours on end. I want to implement some of the fun ways my teachers taught me in the past in my teaching, while also putting my own twists on already known methods. I've found that when teaching from a PowerPoint, students remember the information taught better if there are graphics to look at and if the PowerPoint itself is fun and colorful. I find a lot of joy in creating fun visuals for students to learn from.
