    Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
Legacy, to me refers to the enduring influence an individual leaves behind—a conglomeration of principles, accomplishments, connections, and recollections that sustain and motivate others well beyond their passing. It includes the intangible imprints we leave on people's hearts and minds in addition to material possessions and wealth. A legacy is the reverberation of one's deeds, the far-reaching consequences of one's decisions, and the timeless values that inspire subsequent generations. Because it binds us to something greater than ourselves, legacy is significant. It gives us a sense of identity and continuity by connecting us to our roots and ancestors. Through comprehending and adding to our legacy, we join a continuous narrative that exists outside of time. My life's journey has been greatly impacted by my upbringing. Being raised in a close-knit family, I learned the value of perseverance, morality, and compassion at a young age. My parents and grandparents taught me the importance of education and that anything is possible if you work hard and are persistent. They underlined the value of treating people with kindness and respect and giving back to the community. These teachings influenced my ambitions and objectives. My parents' sacrifices to support our family inspired me to strive for excellence and to have a strong work ethic. Their encouragement and support gave me the courage to follow my dreams in the face of obstacles. Thinking back on my upbringing and the legacy I want to leave behind, I see that it is my dual duty to carry on the good things and end any negative cycles. Maintaining the integrity, empathy, and tenacity that my family has instilled is essential to breaking the cycle. By attempting to be a role model for upcoming generations and exemplifying the value of perseverance, empathy, and hard work in my decisions and deeds, I hope to honor their legacy. Furthermore, I want to carry on the custom of giving back to the community. I think that a person's influence on other people's lives makes up a big portion of their legacy. I want to inspire others by giving back to the community, serving as a mentor, and supporting causes that I care about. To sum up, a legacy is the enduring influence that we leave behind, including our contributions to society, values, and behaviors. My background has greatly influenced my life's journey by teaching me the value of perseverance, morality, and compassion. I'm determined to uphold my legacy's positive aspects going forward and end any harmful cycles. By doing this, I want to make a significant and long-lasting difference that uplifts and empowers coming generations.

My past experiences shaped me into the person I am today. When I take into account the obstacles I have faced and my life lessons. I reflect on how I reacted to these life lessons, what they taught me, and how I can move forward after these experiences. The obstacles that I have faced are not looked at in a negative light, these experiences help me step into the unknown and take me out of my comfort to aid me in growing and becoming a better individual. Experiences that have brought me into the unknown, at first may have seemed to be frustrating and confusing, but understanding the deeper meaning helped me realize that these experiences are only teaching me and helping positively personally develop and contribute to my life purpose. Personally, growing up, I've frequently had trouble getting out of my comfort zone. I was scared to step out into the unknown, I wanted to stay in a comfortable position. I was also scared to speak up for myself. This invited people to want to take advantage of me and bully me. I've faced being bullied for a couple of years, but I then decided that enough was enough. I confronted the students who bullied me. Not knowing what could come from it, stepping into the unknown. Finally confronting the bully and showing others that I can speak up for myself and I Am not someone to be taken advantage of, seized the bullying. Using the values learned through these experiences, I can use these life lessons when I transition onto my college journey. Obstacles and hardships are going to come on this journey, but these obstacles are going to help me grow. Hence I'm choosing to take the college route. I will be placed in an environment where I will be challenged and able to grow. Once again I will be placed into the unknown, but this time I'm aware that there's nothing wrong with stepping out of your comfort zone, and there's nothing wrong with making mistakes, this is a new opportunity and I'm also human. I will always pick myself back up and continue to follow through with my life goals. After obtaining my college degree in environmental sciences, I know I will be able to practice and spread knowledge of sustainability in many communities. I will also be able to change the way factories dispose of or handle substances as the chemicals negatively impact the environment and communities around the factories.

Ollie, was a chubby tuxedo cat that was a part of my family since I was 9 years old. Even though he is not human, he has been the greatest friend one could ever possess. He always slept by me, ate with me, and was with me even through hardships. Unfortunately, Ollie had a sickness as I was entering my first year of high school. He had "crystals" in his unitary track and it was very difficult and painful for him to urinate, with doctors having to utilize a catheter for him to urinate. He even had to stay at the animal hospital for a couple of days. After hurting our pockets, and many days spent at the animal hospital I was very excited for my baby to come back home. "He was finally better, things can go back to normal", I thought but sadly that was not the case as Ollie was going through his final days, Even though he was still sick and in pain he still made sure to spend time with me by jumping up to lay right next to me. On August 21st, 2019, my 14th birthday, Ollie sadly passed away and I was distraught after losing my best friend, every birthday I honor and still keep his memory alive. Having just passed my 18th birthday, I am now a freshman in college and I reflect on the events that took place 4 years ago when I was about to enter high school. I plan to pursue the pre-veterinary track in college and also major in environmental science. I want to fight to achieve environmental sustainability as the world has been constantly going through a loss of biodiversity and resources. I also want to fight to become a veterinarian as I want to save animals' lives and be in support of families, as I was supported while mourning Ollie.

I have learned that harmful factories were placed in many neighborhoods where African Americans reside spewing harmful chemicals and negatively impacting residents by making them sick with cancer. I would like to remove these factories that are impacting residents and change the way these companies go about utilizing the factories.

I took a trip to a resort with no idea that I was about to take the biggest risk of my life. As my family and I arrived and settled in, it was time for the first activity, white water rafting! This will be a breeze, right? No! And the instructors warned us that there would be a possibility of us falling over didn't help my worried self either as I constantly imagined myself flipping over while rafting with a feeling of nervousness settling into my stomach. During the first few minutes of rafting, the waves were calm and I felt at ease. But slowly, the intensity of the waves began to increase. The waves were intensifying and I felt like I was completing levels in a video game. But never mind that! The instructor just warned everyone that this is the final level. Level 4 waves! And the worst set of waves. Now, I'm terrified, I gripped the paddle and my Mom and I worked together to persevere through the waves. I'm zoned out from everything else, my only focus was getting through the rapid water. I was the power in the front and my mom steered and powered the back. “Faith over fear”, I think to myself. After that life-changing moment, who's to say I couldn't do more life-changing activities? Once we were set on calm waters an instructor introduced the idea of jumping off the high rock top into the lake. “Jumping off a rock into the water you say, now that does not seem horrifying at all,” I said to myself. But let's try it anyway! The instructor informed me that there were 3 levels, 3 being the highest and 1 the lowest. As I watched others jump from the highest level into the water, I was inspired. And even though I still felt a bit nervous, I could feel myself pushing and obtaining the courage to step out and fulfill this task. It can’t be that bad, right? Now it's my turn, I picked the lowest level. I stepped up to the rock top and jumped off, I didn't even do a cannonball, I jumped in like a pencil straight stick figure. My body took a straight shot down into the depths of the lake. As I reached the depths I could feel my body start to ascend to the top. But in my mind, I was freaking out! My subconscious self was yelling at me to “SWIM UP, SWIM UP.” I began to tread water up like a frog until my head fully came above water. My mom, the instructor, and other rafters cheered me on, I felt brave and elated! I put my trust in myself, ventured outside of my comfort zone, and took a big risk. This experience has helped me realize that taking risks is okay. I know when it came to rafting and jumping off of the rock top, I thought of all of the things that could go wrong. But I trusted myself and rejected all fear. This experience has changed my mindset. When walking into new phases of my life, I no longer stay in my shell, afraid to step up. I am now able to step out of my comfort zone and be uncomfortable. Without being uncomfortable, there will be no room for me to grow and learn. And throughout failures and mistakes, I am not discouraged. I can use what I have learned and apply them to new experiences moving forward. Mistakes and failures are fundamental and help shape me into the person I am today.

Ever since I was a young girl, I've always had a passion and love for the environment and animals. Learning the hard reality that many species are going extinct and endangered pushed me to help change the world's current conditions. So far, I have fostered over 10 cats, given them homes and housed 2 turtles. I volunteered at and participated in training classes learning about the cats and building protocols. I was able to work with the cats at the shelter. For 10 mins each I was able to spend time with multiple cats and help them with socialization. Many of these cats were new and still updating to a new environment so I enjoyed being able to make the cats feel comfortable and at home by spending time with them, showing them love and affection, and even showing them cat videos on my phone. Also, in the environmental club, I intended to emphasize the value of recycling in our school community. To advocate for more recycling to be done around the school campus, my team and I produced a variety of flyers that explained what recycling is, how to recycle and the benefits of recycling. In addition to the flyers being posted around campus, I also installed recycling bins in several classrooms so that students could have the choice to recycle instead of putting everything in one bin. During the spring, my team and I created paper flowers that were later sold to raise money to donate to local organizations that help in aiding trees, and animals and clean the city’s waters. During daily meetings, I also worked towards eliminating invasive English Ivy that was choking out many of the trees on campus. I am planning on pursuing environmental science and attending college because I desire to further my understanding of environmental challenges and incorporate that understanding into my chosen career path that involves assisting and protecting the environment. My goal is to alleviate the stress on the environment and animals in any way possible. I aspire to travel the world to educate and help animals, and the environment. The ways I plan to help and alleviate stress include working in sanctuaries and shelters, becoming a veterinary technician, fostering, animal life protection and conservation, and by joining environmental groups to voice change and help people become aware. I desire for the world to be placed back into balance. Being awarded this scholarship brings me one step closer to achieving these goals.

In my environmental science class, I have learned that we all have a carbon footprint, and many things such as the food you eat can contribute to increasing your carbon footprint. I would advise my friends and family to decrease the number of meats in their diet since meats such as beef are a big contributor to a high carbon footprint.
