I was inspired to be the first of my family to pursue higher education, have a tech career, and leave home for something unknown. I was inspired by the desperation I felt at night when my siblings and I had to go to bed hungry because my mom didn't get her stamps in time to feed us and had to sacrifice paying the bills to keep a roof over our head versus dinner for a few days until we got a donation from church or a family member. I remember many nights going without but remaining grateful and blessed. I watched in my community people create a life for themselves with the crumbs society left for them to eat, and they made the most out of it, making happy memories where they could be found. It was here I wanted that for myself. I wanted a better life for my family outside struggle and survivor mode. I tried to acquaint myself with failure but never feared it. I am the first of many things, but not the first to experience this imposter syndrome. So, I contacted the available resources to assist me, as I have always seen my community do before me. I reached out to a recruiter in the Navy, deciding to get myself on track, and sought advice from other men and women of color to overcome self-doubt faced in our community as they shaped the path ahead for me to walk on. I applied myself wholeheartedly to therapy so that I could crack down on these self-limiting thoughts that were affecting my ability to perform. These actions allowed me to rank in the Navy and persevere in high-intensity environments. Unfortunately, life throws curve balls, and I was forced to retire from the Navy earlier than expected. I had no idea what to do next or how to provide for myself. I started to recall what I had seen as a little girl, remember the past, and knew just what to do, what I have always seen displayed in action.
